£67.24Metamorphosis on 'Finlandia' (Brass Band) Andrew Wainwright
This major work was commissioned by Five Lakes Silver Band and its Musical Director Christopher Ward in February 2024, and is featured on the band's CD Resurget Cineribus. The music is based on the hymn tune by Katharina von Schlegel, Be Still, My Soul, found in Sibelius' famous tone poem Finlandia (Op. 26). While the only source material used in Metamorphosis on 'Finlandia' is the hymn itself as opposed to any of the developmental music found in the tone poem, it does also seek to depict the strife of the Finnish people against the censorship of the Russian Empire. It is therefore both rousing and turbulent at various times. Metamorphosis on 'Finlandia' commences with a quartet playing a full statement of the hymn in its simplest form, featuring a solo flugel. This leads into a sprightly 6/8 section where a fanfare-like figure proclaims the theme. The music in this section is at times unstable and off-kilter as references to the hymn come and go, often in a very chromatic or dissonant form - a reflection of the struggles that the Finnish people went through. Despite this, there is still a sense of optimism. A somewhat reflective slower section follows, featuring another full rendition of the hymn, with a number of solo voices taking up the tune. This is followed by several cadenzas - for cornet, trombone, Eb bass, and Bb bass, which represent different voices speaking out against the oppression of the Finnish people. This leads into an energetic final movement before a resounding proclamation of the hymn in its full glory. A return to the fanfare heard earlier in the work brings the piece to a glorious conclusion. This stunning arrangement of O Holy Night, showcases the lyrical and expressive potential of the Flugel Horn or Trumpet, arranged by acclaimed jazz composer Tom Kubis and transcribed by Dave Collins. Originally made famous by the legendary Wayne Bergeron with the Tom Kubis Big Band, this arrangement has since become a favourite among brass soloists worldwide. It received its concert premiere with the North York Temple Band (Canada) under Bandmaster Glenn Barlow, featuring the virtuosic talents of Marcus and Harrington Venables. The piece was later recorded by the International Staff Band, conducted by Dr. Stephen Cobb, on their 2016 album Celebrate the Season. The featured soloist on that recording was the world-renowned Philip Cobb. This arrangement offers flexible performance options - it can be presented as a solo feature or as a duet for Flugel Horn and Soprano Cornet (cued into the parts), making it ideal for both concert settings and festive performances. This delightful German lullaby-carol first appeared in print in Samuel Scheidt's Tablaturbuch of 1650, though it may have been written before then, either by Scheidt himself or by an unknown author. J. S. Bach's version (in the form of a melody and figured bass) was included in Schemelli's Gesangbuch of 1736, and it is that which this arrangement for brass band by Andrew Wainwright is based on. £33.62Prelude in C-sharp Minor (Brass Band) Rachmaninoff arr. Rob Bushnell
One of Sergei Rachmaninoff's most famous compositions, Prelude in C-sharp minor (Op. 3, No. 2) is part of a set of five pieces entitled Morceaux de fantaisie. It was written when Rachmaninoff was only 19 years old and was first performance by the composer on 26 September 1892 at a festival called the Moscow Electrical Exhibition. This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. The piece has been transposed from the original (for piano) of C-sharp minor to A minor, which better suits a brass band. There is another arrangement of this piece by Sandy Smith (published by Obrasso) which is designed for more advanced ensembles. £33.62Swinging all the way (Brass Band) Dave Collins
Swinging all the way is a jazzy take on the most well known of Christmas tunes, Jingle Bells. We begin in a dark underground jazz club with the rich, luscious harmonies supporting the tune that we all know. But the melody is perhaps secondary to the timbres and dissonances of this darkly elegant ballad punctuated by the solo cornet, a contrast of styles between the joyous melody and sober accompaniment. As the work progresses it becomes more uplifting, with solo features from the trombone, before emerging into the bright lights of a big band set, with stride bass, crunchy punctuating rhythms and screaming trumpets. The arrangement ends where we began, after our exciting sleigh ride comes to an end. The composer writes: 'One of my all time favourite films is Clue (1985) based on the board game of the same name (Cluedo, if you're from the UK). Clue follows the night of six guests who are invited to a mansion for dinner. The host, Mr. Boddy is murdered, and the guests must work together to find the killer before any more lives are lost. I implore you to give it a watch if you haven't already, even if it's just for Tim Curry's magical performance as The Butler. Running at 82 minutes, the film is over before you know it. I wanted to create a similar story here with Whodunnit?, which like it's inspiration, Clue, moves at an incredible pace as it follows a dinner party, to which our guests have been invited. £33.62'Mid all the traffic (Brass Band) Traditional arr. Andy Wareham
This stunning arrangement by British composer Andy Wareham is of the popular hymn 'Mid all the Traffic, which marries the North-American folksong Shenandoah set to lyrics by English journalist, novelist and poet William Arthur Dunkerley (written under the pseudonym of 'John Oxenham'). The hymn is very well-regarded in both the Salvation Army and wider brass band movement thanks to a popular arrangement by renowned Salvationist composer Leonard Ballantine. The arranger writes: 'This setting of 'Mid All The Traffic was originally composed during the Covid-19 pandemic as an octet arrangement for single instrument. My hope was to create an arrangement that offers an alternative view on harmony and could be multi-track recorded; allowing performers to give, and share, a performance whilst in isolation. The music was written in dedication to all of the 'key-workers' in the UK, especially in the NHS, who worked tirelessly throughout difficult conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic.'
