TriumphantThis is a bright concert march in a traditional style and should pose no problems for the majority of bands.The first half of the march moves between the related keys of A min and C majThe march starts with a bold opening 2 bar statement in A min. At B the rhythm from the middle of the band should not be allowed to slow the pace of the march. C sees a majestic bass melody from Baritones downwards moving to D where a repeat of the original theme is presented before moving to the TRIO section. This moves between the related keys of F maj and D min. The melody heard at E is repeated at G with a florid counter-melody heard from 1st Baritone and Euphonium leading to the finish.

£74.99Kingdom of Dragons - Philip Harper
The 'Kingdom of Dragons' is Gwent in South Wales, known in ancient times as the Kingdom of Gwent, and more recently home to the Newport Gwent Dragons Rugby Union team. This piece was commissioned by the Gwent Music Service with additionalfunding from Ty Cerdd - Music Centre Wales to celebrate the 50th anniversary in 2010 of the formation of the Gwent Youth Brass Band. Although the music is continuous, it is divided into four distinct sections, each one representing one of theunitary authorities which make up the County of Gwent. I. Monmouthshire, which has a large number of ancient castlesII. Blaenau Gwent, an historic area of iron and coal miningIII. Torfaen, where Pontypool Park is a notablelandmarkIV. Newport, the largest city in the region. The music begins with a two-bar fanfare, which sets out all the thematic material of the piece. The mood of pageantry that follows describes some of the ancient castles inMonmouthshire, with rolling tenor drums and fanfaring cornets. After a majestic climax the music subsides and quite literally descends into the coal mines of Blaenau Gwent. The percussion provides effects that suggest industrial machineryclanking into life, and the music accelerates to become a perilous white-knuckle ride on the underground railroad. There is a brief respite as a miner's work-song is introduced and, after a protracted build-up, this is restated at fortissimo beforethe music comes crashing to an inglorious close, much like the UK's mining industry itself. The middle sonorities of the band portray the tranquillity of Pontypool Park, a place of great natural beauty. Brief cadenzas for cornet and euphoniumlead to a full band reprise of the pastoral mood. At the end of this section we find ourselves at the top of the park's 'Folly Tower' from which the distant castle turrets of Monmouthshire are visible. Pontypool RFC was one of eleven clubs inthe first Welsh league in 1881 and a brief but bruising musical portrayal of the formidable Pontypool front-row, the 'Viet Gwent' leads into the work's final section. This portrays Newport, a symbol for progress and optimism for the future, idealsshared by the Gwent Youth Band itself. The music is a vigorous fugue which advances through various keys and episodes before the final triumphant augmented entry which brings the work to a magnificent conclusion. £114.99Keystone - Thierry Deleruyelle
Keystone tells the story of the Odeon of Vriezenveen, a town in the Netherlands. Historically speaking, "odeon" (or "odeum") was the name for ancient Greek and Roman buildings used for activities such as singing, music and poetry. This was the name chosen in 1998 by several members of the 'Vriezenveense Harmonie' for the cultural centre they decided to have built. The piece starts slowly with the bass instruments, then speeds up in a counterpoint passage where the main motif moves from one set of instruments to another. After a slower section, the music speeds up again to reach a majestic chorale symbolising the splendid Odeon. This composition has been orchestrated for brass band to serve as the test piece in the first division of the French National Brass Band Championship of 2023.

Blackbird Special" is a song by American band Dirty Dozen Brass Band. The song is an entertainment piece, a good concert opener or encore. When used as a concert opener one may let the different sections of the band enter the stage one by one playing in order of appearance. Percussion section may play their parts ad lib. The most important is the groove of the piece. Please pay attention to strict articulation from bar 17. Be aware of the marcatos at 33. The last note of the slurs at 41 must be not be too short. It's important to hold the note values, especially in bars 49, 51, 53 and 55. From 57 and throughout the piece, the percussion may invite the audience to join forhandclaps. As an extra effect, the Bass Tubas may stand at 57, the Horns at 59, backrow Cornets and Trombones at 61 and Euphonium/Baritone/Solo Cornets at 63. ||||||

The longest trip we make is to the Far East. Japan, China, Tibet,... all countries with an enormous cultural background and history. Percussion is very important here to give a rich dimension to this Japanese 'Black Bamboo' theme. Tam-tam, Chinese cymbals, Tibetan gong and a kododrum (if not possible, large floor tom) together with marimba and glockenspiel are used all the time in a carefulway. A solo cornet presents the main theme that is answered by the whole lower brass section. While this theme develops now and then the sounds of the impressive 'dung' is heard. (dung is the Tibetan very large trumpet-like instrument with loud and very deep sounds) In a quicker tempo Eb bass, euphonium and solo cornet start with the theme and even the counter theme. The whole group joins the party but everything ends very silently with mute.

In the seventies, Elvis Presley gave many concerts with an orchestra that included a large wind section. These concerts were characterised by enthusiasm and a fast tempo. Burning Love was one of the up-tempo numbers where the bass guitar player played an especially important role. The cornets and the trombones can play standing behind the band adding to the visual and dynamic enhancement.

Just based on its title, this piece has to be celebratory and up-beat, which it is! It opens with a stately fanfare, first played on the low brass before the entire band joins in. This gives way to a contrasting lyrical theme which develops until it joins up with the fanfare to complete the opening section. A lively and heavily syncopated vivo follows, cast as a traditional march, complete with a 'bass strain' and trio. After the original march theme returns, a climax leads back to a reprise of the majestic opening, which brings the piece to an appropriately triumphant close.

£59.99Marcho Brioso - Philip Sparke
Marcho Brioso was commissioned by The Brioso Brass, a British-style brass band from Hokkaido, Japan. They gave the first performance in January 2012.The commission was for a bright and breezy march that the band could use as their theme tune, so Marcho Brioso falls into the composer's series of Broadway-style marches, which includes Slipstream, The Bandwagon and Jubiloso.After a short introduction a solo cornet plays the main theme, accompanied by a euphonium counter-melody. A secondary phrase from the horns and baritones leads to a tuttiversion of the main theme which is followed by the traditional 'bass' strain. A change of key heralds the trio section, which features a cantabile melody on euphonium; this is then taken up by the full band after a short bridge passage and further change of key.This takes us back to the home key which sees a quiet staccato version of the main theme lead to a recapitulation and a short coda which brings the march to a close.

Prelude and Chorale is a scintillating, dynamic opening piece based on the brilliant finale from the earlier concert work Aureus. The latter work is built around a magnificent hymn--which also forms the common thread running through this overture.As the title suggests, the work begins with a modern 'prelude': a prologue to the actual hymn. The beginning of the hymn, especially, serves as the source of the thematic material. The hymn melody itself is immediately embellished by a counter-melody and supported by a rhythm section of bass and drums. This all leads to an energetic passage in which the proverbial stops are pulled out once more.

DescriptionPerseverance was commissioned by Middleton Band to mark their 140th anniversary in 2016, supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, and featured on Middleton Band's CD of the same name.The title is taken from the original name of the 1876 band, the Middleton Perseverance Drum and Fife Band. According to the band's historical records, the Drum and Fife band was formed by six Middleton youngsters eager to learn music but short of funds. Following a whip round, they visited a music shop in Oldham where they purchased a 'one key flute' for six shillings and sixpence, and ('later on') a drum.This determination to make music despite the odds has been a characteristic of the band ever since; at the end of the second world war the band was again down to six players, who rebuilt the 'Middleton Borough Band' back to twenty-six players. After a period of some considerable success throughout the sixties and seventies culminating in winning the National Third Section title in 1983 the band hit hard times again in the late eighties and was down to only four members in 1987 before again being brought back to life. In recent decades the band has built a strong relationship with the East Lancashire Railway, another organisation which has battled sometimes mighty obstacles in its struggle to survive, and has maintained a thriving and successful youth band.The band's will to survive through adversity is reflected in the music, which builds from a sextet of four brass and two percussion players three times, only to fall back to the sextet twice. In the central slow movement the bass drum plays a 'heartbeat' rhythm as the remaining players remember those lost in the war. The relentless pace of the final section culminates in the band triumphing over the adversity which has curtailed the previous two sections. Percussion may stand with them at the conductor's discretion, but only if the band has TWO snare drums and TWO concert bass drums available, as these are also needed at the back of the band in the tutti sections.
