Summer Waltz (Training Band) - Andrew Stevenson

Summer Waltz was written in 2010 for the newly formed Thurcroft Training Band. The piece was essentially written to expand the range of repertoire for the band. There is a recurring melody for the players to latch onto and a strong waltz feel throughout. I have tried to incorporate lots of different techniques and articulations into 'Summer Waltz' to give the players opportunities to practice basic techniques within a band situation. Even though it is quite challenging, the piece is manageable by beginners.Thurcroft Training Band recorded 'Summer Waltz' to go on Thurcroft Welfare Band's CD 'Best of British' which is available off their website: http://www.thurcroftwelfareband.co.uk

Arioso - Johann Sebastian Bach - Jacob de Haan

Even the most basic understanding of Western music must include an intimate familiarity with the magnificent body of works by J.S.Bach. The charming beauty of the ARIOSO from BWV 156 must almost certainly appear on anyone?s personal list of the world's most beautiful melodies. What a wonderful vehicle for the study of artful phrasing and expression! Don't let the Grade 2 designation make you overlook this exquisite rendition for bands that normally play at grades 4, 5, and 6. Musicians at any level of ability will find great rewards here.As the perfect festival centerpiece or as a lovely introspective moment on any concert, Jacob de Haan's touching arrangement of Bach's incomparable ARIOSO, speaking its own inherent and spiritual truth, is sure to find a permanent home in your brass band library.

Parnassus - Jan Van der Roost

Since most of the bands competing in the 4th Section of the Dutch National Championships have many young players, this piece is stylistically youthful— especially in the opening and closing sections. An arpeggio pattern appears numerous times in all registers and is the basic musical element of the main melody, alternating with a second theme that has a slightly different melodic character. The middle section is conceived like a chorale, introduced and developed stepwise: firstly with short patterns and gradually in increasingly long snippets, until it's played in its glorious entirety at measure 216. No real solo passages are included but rather small chamber combinations, thus offering the opportunity to various players to display their technical and performance skills. The finale recaptures musical material from the first section of the piece and provides a majestic conclusion.

The Four Noble Truths - Philip Sparke

The Four Noble Truths are the most basic expression of the teaching of Buddha and therefore still form the guidelines for Buddhists to this day. The four truths are Dukkha, which describes times of major stress in our lives - birth, aging, desire and death; Samudaya which describes those parts of our life that induce stress, feeling, craving, desire; Nirodha which tells us how to eliminate those aspects of our lives which induce stress and Magga which describes the eight didciplines which can help us eliminate the origins of stress from our lives. It can be seen from these over-simplified definitions, that the Four Noble Truths fall into two pairs, the first two describing the origins of stress and the second two describing how we can reduce stress. To reflect this, the four movements of this work are also combined into two pairs - two quick movements and two slow movements. A fascinating work from this great English composer.

    Klabb - Oyvind Moe

Klabb was written in 2010 for the brass band at Manger Folkehogskule and conductor Bjorn Sagstad. The piece consists of a series of short related episodes based on the whole-tone scale, but intermittently tending towards traditional "major" tonality. "Klabb" can refer to punching someone - and the piece is certainly meant to pack a punch - but the common meaning of the word comes from snow clumping to the undersides of skis, or more generally, something that makes for laborious progress. The whole-tone scale is directionless in that it has no implicit pull towards a tonal center, complicating the creation of meaningful and believable harmonic development. In this respect, the title can be seen as the composer's expression of frustration with his own choice of basic material (it seemed like a good idea at the time ...). For the performers, the unusual fingering combinations are what constitute the "klabb". Good luck, and don't forget to wax!

    Chain - Piet Swerts

Chain was composed between June and August 2000 as the test piece for the 2002 European Brass Band Championship. The composer's idea was to compose a one-movement piece - a work that starts mysteriously and develops in various directions. As his basic material, he chose a figure that is the abbreviation of the European Brass Band Championship: EBBC. This figure is developed in a chain of figures which gradually lead to the climax of the piece.
