COMPOSER: Tamsin TateCOMPOSERS NOTE"All shall be well" was composed during the first lockdown of the Covid crisis, from May 2020.This was a worrying time for many and a time of great anxiety and sadness for some.I have always tried to be practically optimistic in trying times, but still I needed hope.I am lucky to have a faith in God which gives me hope and assurance that things will be better,and I also know that music, particularly playing it, can help express some of these emotions.Certainly, music through the crisis was a wonderful, enjoyable escape for meand one I shared with my family and my band family through our online recordings.Julian of Norwich was an anchoress in the 14th Century.She set herself apart for God and spent a lot of time in prayer.Interestingly, she was the first published woman in the English language.Julian of Norwich is quoted as saying "all shall be well, all shall be well,and all manner of thing shall be well." The paraphrase of this spurred me on to develop this piece for brass band.Hopefully you will also find that the music portrays the worries and trials of this uniquetime through the natural minor key, with the rhythm hinting towards the phrase"All shall be well" and then the dawning transition to the major keyfollowed by a triumphant ending with the whole band joining together.Thanks to Adam Cable and the Martlesham Brass family for support and encouragement always.Thanks also to Alan Fernie and his supportive critique of my initial efforts.LM931 - ISMN : 9790570009312

I first heard of the song National Express, which was in the British Top Ten in 1998, when my son Jon mentioned it last year. It was written and sung by Neil Hannon, with his group "The Divine Comedy". Jon said that it would sound good played by a brass band. Tim Benson, solo trombone with Stannington Brass Band, also mentioned it on the internet forum, themouthpiece.com I spoke with Tim, and agreed to do a brass band arrangement with a special feature for solo trombone. In this arrangement, the solo trombone adds extra colour to a band arrangement which is a mixture of big band and country style. The trombone part is well within the capabilities of a good player. There is a comic element to this song, and the cornets and flugel contain an eight bar spoken part, which, if included, would enhance it's entertainment value.Tim Benson took the music to rehearsal at Stannington Brass Band and it instantly became a hit with the band who left whistling the melody. The piece not only retains the fun of the original, but it cleverly uses the band, and a bit of additional vocals from the cornet section. BEFORE THE CROSS (Cornet Solo with Brass Band Set) - Edward Gregson
Written at the request of David Daws for his solo album The Sound of David Daws, this meditation for cornet and brass band uses the composer's own song Before the cross (originally published in The Musical Salvationist, April 1965), the first lines of which are Before the cross I stand in fear and wonder, and see that all my sirs on Thee are laid. The song was written at an early stage of the composer's career, just before commencing study at The Royal Academy of Music, London. After a brief introduction the melody is heard twice, first played by the soloist, then on Euphonium and Flugel Horn with the soloist adding ornate counterpoint before taking up the melody once again, this time leading to a quiet and reflective conclusion.

ROSEHILL (Brass Band Set) - Albert Jakeway
The Salvation Army Assurance Society Band was the first Salvation Army band to take part in the Lord Mayor's Show, in 1928. The Society relocated from London to Reading at the beginning of World War Two and the title of this march is derived from the name of the Reading property. Rosehill is a fine march containing all the drama and pyrotechnics that make it suitable for a Whit Friday type march contest.

The Star and a Rose is a big-scale Christmas piece for band, featuring four seasonal chorales.The first is a Gregorian-like chant Hodie Christus natus est.In this section of the piece, a soloist can be placed away from the band, maybe on a gallery. The soloist can be a tenor instrument, maybe trombone, or you can feature a vocal soloist. After this, the music leads us on to the old German Christmas chorale Lo, how a rose e'er blooming. This song is given a fairly rhythmical treatment, but make sure that the melody is presented in a cantabile style. An interlude follows, before the piece presents one of the most used and loved Scandinavian Christmas chorales, Mitt hjerte alltid vanker (My Heart will always wander), composed by the Danish bishop Hans Adolph Brorson around 1732. This song is building towards a climax, before the solo horn brings it all down to the Stable view described in the lyrics. Then comes a transition that brings us in to the final section of the piece, which presents the international Christmas Carol Adeste Fideles. As many will notice, I have borrowed a section from David Wilcocks majestic harmonization towards the end.The title of the piece has its background form the lyrics in My heart will always wander, where the text speaks about the stars in the sky. But also in the Latin text for Adeste Fideles: Stella duce, Magi, Christum adorantes. The Rose is of course from the lyrics in the chorale Lo, how a Rose.Duration: 10.30
