Composed in 1893, John Philip Sousa's The Liberty Bell was originally intended for an operetta. However, after witnessing the grand spectacle America in Chicago - featuring a dramatic backdrop of a massive painting of the Liberty Bell - Sousa was inspired to rename the piece. Since then, it has become one of his most recognisable and enduring marches. The march gained a whole new audience in the 20th century when it was adopted as the signature tune for the iconic British television show Monty Python's Flying Circus, cementing its place in popular culture. This engaging brass band arrangement by Dr. Keith M. Wilkinson adds a unique touch with the inclusion of several solos for a large unpitched bell, enhancing both the aural and visual experience for performers and audiences alike. It has been recorded by the Brass Band of the Western Reserve, under Wilkinson's direction, on the CD Slides Rule. This march, written in 1893, was originally destined for inclusion in an operetta but after the composer had witnessed a spectacle called "America" in Chicago, which had as its backdrop a huge painting of the Liberty Bell, it was given the name by which it has become famous. Further recognition has come in more recent years by the adoption of the march as the signature tune for the popular TV programme, Monty Python.The arrangement includes several solos for a large unpitched bell which add aural (and visual) interest.
