£33.35Men of Harlech (Brass Band) Welsh Traditional arr. Alex McGee
This contemporary take by Alex McGee on the Welsh folk song Men of Harlech will be an entertaining addition to concert programmes. The arranger writes: 'Men of Harlech is perhaps one of the most well known of all traditional Welsh folk songs, but not like this. This setting was inspired by a composer who I first encountered as a 14-year-old playing in his first regional brass band, Gareth Wood. Upon learning of the death of Gareth I felt compelled to honour his memory and his music in composition. I struck upon the idea to do what he had done to the tune Sosban Fach to Men of Harlech, to take the tune as the raw material and try to craft it into something new yet recognisable, modern yet accessible. The work attempts to highlight what for me are the underlying characteristics of we Welsh; prone to melancholy but quick to find joy, contradictory, inviting, welcoming and warm but capable of housing a fierce streak of nationalistic pride. I dedicate this work to Gareth Wood and thank him for his music.' Aberystwyth - Joseph Parry - Ed Keeley
This arrangement is based on the famous Welsh hymn tune Aberystwyth by Joseph Parry. Composed in the late nineteenth century whilst Parry was Professor of Music at Aberystwyth University. The tune is a powerful example of the expressive style of Welsh chapel music.Most widely known today as the setting for Charles Wesley's hymn "Jesus, Lover of My Soul," the melody is notable for its haunting minor key, sweeping phrases and dramatic climax. These qualities translate naturally to the warm, resonant and warm timbre of the brass band.This setting seeks to capture both the solemn dignity and emotional depth of the original tune. Rich harmonic textures and the sonorous colours of the brass band highlight the melody's expressive contours, building towards a broad and noble climax while preserving the reflective and haunting character of the hymn.

Suo Gan - Traditional - Max Stannard
Suo Gan is a traditional Welsh lullaby which was written by an anonymous composer. The song features in Steven Spielberg's 1987 film, Empire of the Sun, where a young Christian Bale lip syncs to a performance by James Rainbird. The song has been recorded by great Welsh singers including Charlotte Church and Bryn Terfel. This solo gives a flexible option of any of your Bb instrumentalists in the band taking on the lead part of this beautiful tune.

'So Amazing', is a beautiful new hymn tune arrangement from the pen of Welsh Composer Jonathan Mead. The music would create a lovely moment in a concert, where the audience would have time for reflection. This upbeat, foot-tapping march by Welsh composer Jonathan Mead features the two well known Welsh tunes of Aberystwyth and God Bless The Prince of Wales. Aberystwyth is set as a big bold bass solo and careful attention will need to be paid to make sure that it sounds clean and together. God Bless The Prince of Wales first appears as a traditional hymn tune, before returning in a more vibrant, lively style, with florid scalic passages for the solo cornets and euphoniums. The march was written with St David's Day in mind, although will be an appropriate addition to concert programme throughout the year as either an opener or finisher.
