In English-speaking countries 'Away in a Manger' is one of the first Christmas songs to be taught to little children. It is a moving song with simple words, which makes it easy to understand. The song is also known as 'Luther's Cradle Hymn'. This suggests that Martin Luther was the author of the lyrics. According to researchers, however, this is a misconception the author is unknown. In England 'Away in a Manger' is sung to a different melody than in the USA, for example. The 'English' melody was composed by W.J. Kirkpatrick. Andrew Mackereth made a touching arrangement of the 'English' melody, which suits the tender lyrics perfectly.

Originally beginning life as a joke item, this track was to feature on Kylie Minogue's 2015 Christmas album. James Corden & Kylie Minogue have been good friends since hosting the BRIT awards in 2009 and upon completing the recording, record producers took a liking to it and elevated the song to single status. The piece makes a great cornet/horn duet and although was initially released for a Christmas album, it is not a Christmas song. Fakenham Fair - Traditional - A. Cook
The origins of the song Fakenham Fair are somewhat obscure. It was collected by Peter Bellamy, who performed it unaccompanied on his first solo LP, "Mainly Norfolk" in 1968, giving credit to a Peter Bullen of Norwich from whom he had learned it, Bullen in turn giving credit to his grandfather. But beyond that, other than it definitely being a Norfolk folk song, the rest is a mystery.Over the years, Fakenham Fair has become a firm favourite among folk audiences, probably the most famous version being the 2008 recording by folk supergroup 'Bellowhead' which this setting for brass band pays tribute to. A bright, quirky, and bouncy 5:4/10:8 waltz, the band parts dance back and forth from simple time to compound time and back again, giving a constant flow that somehow always feels natural despite the irregular rhythm... but which will also keep your audience guessing where the beat will land next! With solos and features for principal chairs around the band, nobody is left out of the fun. Engaging to listen to and even more so to play, Fakenham Fair is a perfect light concert item for the band that likes to show off their rhythmic and lyrical sides at the same time.

The Water Is Wide This arrangement of the folk song "The Water Is Wide" also known as "O Waly, Waly" has been given a more modern touch. The opening features a solo flugle horn and Eb horn duet which flows into a more modern pop feel. Audiences will appreciate the interplay between this lovely melody and the short countermelody of "Simple Gifts". The song concludes with the solo flugle and horn.

Song for the Skies was commissioned by Tuba virtuoso Les Neish and was given its world premier on the December 9th 2010 with the James Madison University Brass Band in Harrisonburg, Virginia, USA.Les asked me to compose a slow melody that highlights the wonderful sonorous sound of the Tuba. I am a big fan of Les and of the instrument and knowing the capabilities of Les as a soloist I wanted to experiment with the range and colour of the instrument in this solo.After a warm introduction from the ensemble the soloist enters almost timeless over the muted cornets. The melody when it is first heard has a somewhat haunting Celtic feel to it. It is intentionally marked as con rubato so that the soloist can really put their own musical stamp on the music. As the haunting melody repeats again this time in a change of key the accompaniment takes more of a role within the piece of music performing counter melodies within this second section.The middle of the piece introduces a new secondary melodic device that serves as an introduction to the original melody played in all its glory by the ensemble. This dies away to leave the second half of the melody in the euphoniums and baritones as the soloist plays a soaring counter melody in the highest register of the instrument.The piece starts to return home with a recapitulation of the introduction followed by the second part of the original melody by the soloist. After a momentary reflective solo from the soloist the introduction is used for a final time before the tuba guides us home to conclude.For the soloist, there are a number of occasions where the opportunity to play in the upper register of the instrument arises. However, I have also given the opportunity for the soloist to play various passages down the octave so it suits the performers playing style and range.Song for the Skies is very simple yet beautiful and I feel it suits the playing of the Eb Tuba perfectly. The song is an encouragement to Christians to stay strong in the Lord, even in times of difficulty. The piece has a lively rock feel which requires precision in articulation and a sense of drive throughout.535: Fill me anew (Mark Feltwell)The melody Fill me anew (T.B. 611) has always been a favourite of the composer and this composition was used at the Worchester Corps in their Pentecost services. It is a simple melody with a simple purpose and associated prayer that is the focus of the piece, 536: There's something about that name (William Gaither arr. Kingsley Layton)The chorus (S.A.S.B. 80) from which this piece takes its title was composed by Bill and Gloria Gaither. They wrote it in 1970, having watched their grandparents near the end of their lives and pass away. At the same time, they were, as a couple, embracing parenthood. It resonated with them how the young loved to say the name of Jesus as well as those that were nearing the end of their lives. The chorus reflects the peace and comfort which comes to us when we call on that name during both the good and challenging times in life. The Gaithers are a performing and songwriting couple who have become well-known within the Southern Gospel music genre.537: Selection - Singing Praises! (Noel Jones)A motif, based on the phrase 'Praise him!, Praise him!, Ever in joyful song', appears throughout the selection. Songs also featured include I love to sing of the Saviour (S.A.S.B. 845) and Singing glory, glory, Glory be to God on high (S.A.S.B. 840)
