£32.97'Mid all the traffic (Brass Band) Traditional arr. Andy Wareham
This stunning arrangement by British composer Andy Wareham is of the popular hymn 'Mid all the Traffic, which marries the North-American folksong Shenandoah set to lyrics by English journalist, novelist and poet William Arthur Dunkerley (written under the pseudonym of 'John Oxenham'). The hymn is very well-regarded in both the Salvation Army and wider brass band movement thanks to a popular arrangement by renowned Salvationist composer Leonard Ballantine. The arranger writes: 'This setting of 'Mid All The Traffic was originally composed during the Covid-19 pandemic as an octet arrangement for single instrument. My hope was to create an arrangement that offers an alternative view on harmony and could be multi-track recorded; allowing performers to give, and share, a performance whilst in isolation. The music was written in dedication to all of the 'key-workers' in the UK, especially in the NHS, who worked tirelessly throughout difficult conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic.' Commissioned by Micah Dominic Parsons, Blaenwern Diversions is based on the well loved hymn, Love Divine. The composer writes: 'Originally intended to be a set of variations, I found myself wandering around the notes of the hymn tune at the piano and found that the variations almost took on a life of their own resulting in what we have here - diversions. There are 8 diversions in total; the introductory diversion; diversions 1 - 6; and the finale which are divided into three linked movements. Blaenwern Diversions represents my entry into the world of contest works, so even though the piece aims to test the band, it is important that the band enjoy the music within no matter how treacherous!' VIEW SCORE PDF The arranger, Kenneth Downie writes: 'This music was commissioned by Mike Griffiths, Music Director of Riviera Concert Brass, based in Torquay in Devon, England. It is developed around the hymn tune Margaret, and written in memory of the lady of that name who was a renowned supporter of, and generous donor to the band. The graceful melody was written by Timothy Matthews (1826-1910), and it is usually associated with the words of the hymn, the first verse of which says: Thou didst leave thy throne and thy kingly crown When thou camest to earth for me; But in Bethlehem's home was there found no room For thy holy nativity, O come to my heart, Lord Jesus; There is room in my heart for thee. I feel that there is a strong emotional core to this lovely tune and any performance should seek to bring out this quality, in a musical manner.' PDF download includes score and full set of parts. 'Prelude on St Clement's' was composed for the 2023 Royal Northern College of Music Brass Band Festival in memory of internationally renowned conductor and composer Bramwell Tovey. . Bramwell was the Artistic Director of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain throughout the composer's 7 years as a tenor horn player in the NYBBGB and the hymn tune 'St Clement's (no. 82 in the 120 Hymns for Brass Band book) was used by Bramwell to conclude every course. This setting of 3 verses of the hymn tune 'The Day Thou Gavest. was premiered by the RNCM Brass Band in January 2023.

"Nearer, My God, to Thee" is a 19th-century Christian hymn which retells a story from 'Genesis': "So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it..."The hymn was also used by other composers like Carl Nielsen and Charles Ives, and was played by the string ensemble on the movie 'Titanic' when the vessel sank.This arrangement is based on the beautiful BYO choir version and Mike Kilmartin did a great job making a lovely band version of it.
