Jacob de Haan wrote this arrangement for concert band, fanfare band and brass band and optional male voice choir. The original carol was written by the Austrian composer and organist Franz Gruber (1787-1863). He was asked to write Silent Night) on the 24th of December 1818 by the priest of the Church of St. Nicolas in Oberndorf, who had himself written the text. It is a romantic carol, with nuances of contemporary Austrian folk and Italian pastorale music.Duration: 4:45

This beautiful arrangement of the much loved tenor solo The Three Kings was made for the GUS Band and euphonium soloist Mark Giles, for the CD recording Christmas Fantasia - The Music of Andrew Wainwright (2013). The Three Kings, or Three Kings From Persian Lands Afar, is a Christmas carol by the German composer Peter Cornelius. He set Die Konige for a vocal soloist, accompanied by Philip Nicolai's hymn Wie schon leuchtet der Morgenstern ('How Brightly Shines the Morning Star'), which he erroneously thought was an Epiphany hymn. In fact, it is an Advent hymn in which the morning star is an allegory for the arrival of Jesus, not the Star of Bethlehem. In Cornelius' original second setting, the accompaniment was played on a piano but the English organist Ivor Atkins later arranged the accompaniment for choir, with the choir singing the words of the original hymn. The carol describes the visit of the Biblical Magi to the Infant Jesus during the Nativity and is also used as an Epiphany anthem. PDF download includes score and parts. Composed for Strata Brass in 2020 as part of their COVID-19 induced, virtually recorded 'A Christmas Carol' (a new suite for brass bandlasting around 30 minutes in total), 'Dream Sequence' is an ethereal texture-driven work relying heavily on the use of tuned percussion to create a dreamy layer of sound within which the band intersperse. In the context of the story, this work is used to set the scene of Scrooge drifting to sleep, contemplating his ways before the visit of the 3 ghosts later that evening. The 2 Christmas carols utilised in this work are 'O Come Emmanuel' and 'Carol of the Bells'. .

This is a great little Christmas number that is easy to get together. It starts with a simple quartet setting of the carol, it then moves into the full band playing the piece. Then there is a minor, slightly Russian setting of the music, before it moves into a 3/4 waltz setting back in the tonic key. It then moves back 4/4 for the final setting of the carol with a full final verse before moving back to a quartet for the ending.
