£49.95VITAE AETERNUM (Brass Band Set - Score and Parts)
2014 Butlins First Section. Vitae Aeternum represents the first substantial composition conceived by Paul Lovatt-Cooper in his capacity as 'Composer in Residence' to the world famous Black Dyke Band.? Vitae Aeternum (meaning 'Eternal Life') takes its inspiration from songs composed by Ivor Bosanko and Dick Krommenhoek and is in three continuous movements. Vitae Aeternum was commissioned by Gerard Klaucke of GK Graphic Design VOF and received its first performance in the De Lawei Concert Hall, Drachten, Holland on 25th August 2007 played by Black Dyke Band conducted by Dr. Nicholas Childs. Later that year, it formed the finale of Brighouse and Rastrick Band's winning programme at the Brass in Concert Championship and has since been embraced by other leading bands including Cory Band, Leyland Band and The International Staff Band of The Salvation Army.

538: For Christ alone (Morgan Juel Stavik)This gentle and delicate march takes its title from the chorus of Fred Fry's song (S.A.S.B. 960).539: Calling Today! (Noel Jones)The words for this three-verse arrangement were written by Fanny Crosby, with music composed by George Cole Stebbins. While the song doesn't feature in the current Salvation Army Song Book, it was included in both the 1955 and 1986 editions. This arrangement was prepared during the pandemic, where people were encouraged to make contact by telephone as much as possible, and certainly welcomed phone calls from so many friends. Thinking of the calls, led to the words of this song.540: When the saints go marching in (Thomas Mack)This arrangement was written for the service celebrating the life of Irma Long at the request of her daughter. Irma, a gentle and kind woman, was a soldier for 70 years, 40 of which were at Corry Corps, Pennsylvania, USA, where she was also a songster, a pre-school Sunday School teacher, and corps treasurer. She drove the country roads from her village to Corry five times a week, even during the hard snow and ice of winters, so that she and her three daughters could attend corps activities. 541: There is sunshine (Wilfried Weiland)This work introduces a new composer to our band journals. Wilfried Weiland was the Band master at Berlin Central Corps and a member of the German Staff Band for several years. Although this is Wilfried's first published contribution with The Salvation Army, he has had several brass pieces published in the United Kingdom and abroad. The arrangement was originally written in July 2022 for the 25th anniversary of the Naumburg Corps, Germany. The reggae genre, employed here, has not been featured within our journals before but suits the style of a brass band well.

522: Festival March - The Rescuers (Andrew Hedley)This exciting and bright festival march comes from a new contributor to the band journals. Andrew Hedley is a bandsman at Chester-le-Street Corps and a member of the Euphonium Section of the International Staff Band. This work contains inventive harmonic and melodic patterns and we hope this will be the first of many works from this composer to be seen in our journals.523: Moses and Pharaoh (Ralph Pearce)This piece owes its creation to the playing of the Montclair Citadel Young Peoples' Band in the Sunday School assembly every weekend. The song Pharaoh, Pharaoh is extremely popular and is sung with gusto and much movement. The presentation of this song derives for an accompaniment written for the band to play along with the singing. To widen its use, the spiritual Go down, Moses (STTL Vol.7, Part 2) was added to make the present composition. This music should have drive throughout and be played with a sense of fun.524: Lord, to thee (Alan Williams)This is a setting of the tune Hendon (T.B. 249). The piece uses the first verse of Frances Ridley Havergal's commonly associated text 'Take my life and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee' (S.A.S.B. 623), and from there it takes its title.525: Song Arrangement - This is why (Noel Jones)This music is based on the tune This is why (T.B. 353) by Elisha Albright Hoffman and this two-verse arrangement reflects the great song of testimony Would you know why I love Jesus (S.A.S.B. 912). An associated scripture reference is found in Mark 10:45 'For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many'. The motif 'Would you know' occurs in the opening bars and is repeated throughout the piece, along with fragments of the first verse. The chorus confirms the hoy that Christians experience knowing that Christ's sacrifice has bought forgiveness for our wrongdoings.

Glorified was composed for the Canadian Staff Band's 50th Anniversary celebrations. This work is based on two tunes, Lord, be glorified (T.B. 738), a significant song at Canada's Territorial Music School over the years, and Great is thy faithfulness (T.B. 641). This song celebrates and signifies God's faithfulness to all associated with the Canadian Staff Band, and the commitment shown by its members through the years.The first half of the work harkens back to those members of the band who tragically perished in the early days on RMS Empress of Ireland, which was en route to England for the 1914 International Congress when it was struck by another vessel and sank. The rhythmic ostinatos heard represent the passing of time over the years. After the somewhat dark introduction, the music settles into a reflective rendition of In my life, Lord, be glorified (S.A.S.B. 593), before bursting into a rhythmic and jagged mixed-metre section. A yearning elegy pays tribute to those who lost their lives.The second half of the piece is celebratory in nature and commemorates the reformation of the band and the rich history which has ensued in the subsequent years. The rhythmic energy found in this section builds to a majestic presentation of the tune Lord, be glorified, which leads into the return of Great is thy faithfulness but in an optimistic fashion.

2013 Finals of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain - 3rd SectioTo some, the tragic story of the Penlee lifeboat, Solomon Browne, would need no introduction, and to some the pain felt is still very much a reality. The composer, born just a few weeks before that fateful night on the 19th December 1981, has created this work as a musical homage to the bravery of the souls who lost their lives and has dedicated it to their memory.Penlee was commissioned by the Cornwall Youth Brass Band using funds bequeathed by Michael Pickett. The first performance was given by the Cornish Youth Brass Band, conducted by Ian Porthouse, at St. Michael's Church, Newquay, on 30th December 2008.Penlee has been voted into the Classic FM Hall of Fame 2011 at No.106. The Dreaded Groove and Hook (Brass Band - Score and Parts)
The Dreaded Groove and Hook is an up-tempo acid-jazz number that draws inspiration from bands like Jamiroquai and The Youngblood Brass Band. The groove in question is the main tune that is shared round the band, whilst the hook, in 'pop' terms, is the catchy bit of the song. The whole band joins in to play a huge 'riff' that acts as a chorus to the jazz-like verses.The piece was commissioned by Jason Katsikaris and The Leyland Band, who gave the first performance as part of their programme for the Brass in Concert Championships, held at The Sage, Gateshead on the 16th November 2008. Early in 1941 William Walton, 39, received his call-up papers. He was by then one of the most eminent of British composers and was exempted from military service on condition that he provided music for films deemed to be of 'national importance'. Scoring Lawrence Olivier's Shakespeare epic Henry V in 1943 was the most substantial of these wartime projects. His role in patriotic films from 1941 and 42 like The Foreman went to France, Next of Kin, Went the day Well and The First of the Few was to provide appropriate title music and some underscoring at key moments. Walton extracted the most substantial portions of the latter as the popular Spitfire Prelude and Fugue for orchestra. The remaining music remained unpublished until 1990, when Christopher Palmer assembled the highlights into A Wartime Sketchbook. I was intrigued to hear these examples of Walton's wartime music and having discovered that they would fit naturally and idiomatically onto the brass band, I arranged six of the numbers into a suite for Besses o' th' Barn Band, which I was conducting at the time.In 1995 the brass band suite was recorded by the famous Black Dyke Mills Band as part of an all Walton album which I produced for the ASV label (ASV CD WHL 2093). This award- winning CD also included Walton's First Shoot, in the edition by Elgar Howarth, my transcription of movements from Music for Children and two substantial brass versions by Edward Watson of the suite from Henry V (with narrator) and the March and Siegfried Music from The Battle of Britain music.Prologue: This is the stirring title music from Went the day Well, a screen play by Graham Greene about a German airborne invasion of an English village. The main theme leads toBicycle Chase: Characteristic musical high-jinks for J.B.Priestley's The Foreman went to France.Refugees: From the same film, this is a poignant accompaniment to the long march of refugees. As Ernest Irving, the film's musical director, put it, "this really makes your feet sore and your knees sag."Young Siegfrieds: This lively movement comes from the music that Walton composed for The Battle of Britain in 1968, with the assistance of Malcolm Arnold, but which the film's producer rejected. It portrays first the Berliners, cheerfully ignoring the black-out and then, in the trio, the Young Siegfrieds of the Luftwaffe, courtesy of a parody of Siegfried's horn call from Wagner's opera.Romance: A soldier and a Dutch refugee snatch a few tender moments together in Next of Kin.Epilogue: At the end of The Foreman went to France, the French look forward with hope and optimism to eventual liberation.- Paul HindmarshDuration: 14.00

The New Mills Old Prize Band is the inheritor of a proud tradition going back 200 years. Its origin lies in a brass and reed band formed in 1812 by Timothy Beard and it is one of the oldest brass bands in continuous existence in the UK.The New Mills Old Prize Band is inextricably linked to the Beard family. Timothy Beard the founder of the band, was one of five children and two of his brothers, John and Stephen, were to join him in the band.Excelsior is based on the hymn tune 'Ransom' believed to have been composed in 1838 by Timothy's brother Stephen Beard. I have taken this hymn tune and composed a concert fanfare utilising the main melodic material from the original hymn tune.The title of the piece comes from the bands original motto "Excelsior!"Paul Lovatt-Cooper
