Romance (Brass Band) Rob Wiffin

This simple little romance was written in the style of a Catalan folk song. It is entirely original but was undoubtedly influenced by the arrangements of Catalan folk songs for guitar by Miguel Llobet (1878-1938). Typical of the style, the tune is in 6/8 with a gentle lilt and has just one rather refined outburst of passion before retreating back into its shell. Principio (Brass Band) Rob Wiffin

Principio is a vivacious concert opener. The word 'Principio' means start or beginning in both Spanish and Italian and this piece sets out to be just that - an energetic concert opener. Most of the melodic material is derived from the main theme which starts and ends the piece with its slightly lopsided rhythm. The piece is mostly conventional in language though with a touch of crunch here and there. I recently revised it, but originally composed it quite a few years ago and, at the time, showed it to Philip Sparke during the course of some composition lessons with him. Joy Unbound (Brass Band) Rob Wiffin

Joy Unbound was finished on 31st July 2022 - the day the English Lionesses won Euro 2022 at Wembley. The euphoric nature of the piece fits the exuberance of the occasion. There are some fast semiquaver runs and a few moments where it might be very tempting to play in the wrong place, but otherwise it is not too technically difficult. Golden Lullaby (Brass Band) Rob Wiffin

This is a song-setting giving an opportunity for some lyrical expression. It started life as a song on the subject of gold but I wanted to see if it would stand alone as an instrumental piece. The gentle lilt of the 5/4 melody suggests a lullaby although the texture of the piece builds in an un-lullaby-like fashion towards the end. Finale from Leading Edge (Brass Band) Rob Wiffin

This finale from my suite Leading Edge is particularly well-suited to brass band. The drums lead into the energetic, dance-like theme that announces the Finale. Although the use of minor keys persists in this movement, the atmosphere is energetic and vivacious. A number of themes are considered before the flugelhorn introduces the theme that will go through a number of guises before emerging later in triumphant form in the whole band.
