The Fall of Icarus - Jonathan Bates

DURATION: 4 minutes. DIFFICULTY: 2nd+. The Fall of Icarus was composed for the Lions Youth Brass Band as the finale to their runers-up set at the 2018 National Youth Brass Band Championships of Great Britain. The music is inspired by the steady rise towards the sun of the Greek mythological character Icarus, as his impending fate becomes closer and closer. This work was designed as a more widely accesible alternative to the much loved March from the Pines of Rome by Respighi.

New York is the third movement of East Coast Pictures, originally written for wind band, commissioned in 1985 by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from National Westminster Bank plc. These three short 'pictures' were inspired by several visits by the composer to a small part of the USA's East Coast, an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people. We Three Gypsy Kings

Duration: 4:00 Minutes Percussion: 4 PlayersTimpani, Drum Kit, Tambourine, Bongos and XylophoneAll Rights ReservedProgramme NotesThis is a true storyI had a dream…..The three wise men were looking for the baby Jesus to give him their gifts. This was done somewhat in the manner of the scene of Monty Python’s ‘Life of Brian’. The search was not successful – Sir Alan Sugar (‘The 'Apprentice’) made an appearance ordering the three wise men to “get off my land”. Meanwhile, the baby Jesus slept peacefully on, unaware of the nearby disturbance. Bizarrely, this dream sequence was played out at high speed, as in the closing scene from each episode of ‘The Benny Hill Show’ of the 1970s.My arrangement attempts to portray this comical caper.Jock McKenzieJock McKenzie studied trumpet at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester where he was a joint recipient of the college’s concerto prize. Since 1987 Jock has based his musical career in Hampshire, working as a freelance trumpeter, conductor, composer, arranger and brass teacher. Currently Jock holds the position of Professional Leader (Brass) for Hampshire Music Service and is the Director of the Hampshire County Youth Band. It is the mix of all of these musical roles that has led to Jock establishing a reputation as a leading creator of brass music resources, particularly in the field of education and brass ensemble music.Duration: 4:00 Minutes Percussion: 4 PlayersTimpani, Drum Kit, Tambourine, Bongos and Xylophone All Rights Reserved Programme NotesThis is a true storyI had a dream…..The three wise men were looking for the baby Jesus to give him their gifts. A-Wassailing

Duration: 2:30 Minutes Percussion: 4 PlayersSnare Drum, Tambourine, Cymbals and GlockenspielAll Rights ReservedProgramme NotesThe English custom of ‘Wassailing’ is the seasonal act of singing carols door-to-door and wishing good health. The singers and dancers (often very poor) would do this in the hope of being offered a drink from the ‘wassail bowl’ – a warm broth of hot ale, fruit and spices; good sustenance for those who were cold and often homeless. Behold the Power of God - Christopher Bond

Written for Cornwall Youth Brass Band & Dedicated to Goff RichardsBehold the Power of God (2010) was written for and premiered by the Cornwall Youth Brass Band in dedication to their Musical Advisor at the time; the late Cornish composer Goff Richards who later described the work as 'a remarkable piece of writing'. The work's title, while implying a religious meaning, actually references Goff's name, with his full name Godfrey translating as 'God-peace' and Richards meaning 'Power'. Two energetic outer sections fall either side of a more lyrical middle section featuring the solo cornet. The perfect opening item at any concert.

    Canzonetta

Canzonetta is a tenor horn solo with optional brass band or piano accompaniment.Canzonetta was one of my earliest compositions, written in my early days as an undergraduate. Along with a companion piece called Caprice it was written for an old friend, Louise Hunt (now Louise Skillander), to whom it is dedicated. We had both been in the Northop Youth Band together, and both pieces were the result of a conversation about the lack of 'good tenor horn solos' for lower section and youth players at the time. With more mature consideration the Caprice has been consigned to the dustbin of history, but the simplicity of Canzonetta has allowed it to stand the test of time with a few minor scoring revisions. To view a PDF file of the full score click here, and to view the solo part click here.

Memories of a Lost Boy - Ben Hollings

Commissioned by Dr. Robert Childs for Foden's Band's ‘Celebration of Youth' Brass in Concert 2017 programme, Memories of a Lost Boy takes its inspiration from J.M Barrie's fictional character - the epitome of eternal youth - Peter Pan.Peter is a free spirit who can fly and never grows up. In Hook, he flies away to Kensington Gardens, only to return and find that his parents have forgotten about him and have had another child. Peter becomes the leader of the Lost Boys, a band of boys who were lost by their parents and came to live on the mythical island of Neverland.Scottish Novelist and playwright, J.M. Barrie, created Peter's character based on his older brother, David, who died in an ice-skating accident the day before his 14th birthday. His mother and brother thought of him as forever a boy.Memories of a Lost Boy can be heard on Flowers Band's 2018 CD release: Celebrate - 50 Years of Flowers.
