Passing by on parade and then leaving the town with the music getting quieter and quieter and the band getting further and further away......The Longest Day is a 1962 American epic war film based on Cornelius Ryan's 1959 non-fiction book of the same name about the D-Day landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944. The film was produced by Darryl F. Zanuck for 20th Century Fox.The theme song was written by Paul Anka. Anka was a rising singer, songwriter and actor. The theme is used sporadically through the movie as background music played by a piano in the RAF Officers Club and on a harmonica. The theme is also played at the end.Anka talked about starring in the movie with producer Daryl Zanuck. It occurred to him to ask Zanuck who was doing the music for the film, and the response was that there would be no music. Melodies then started banging at me, and he wrote the song "The Longest Day." He then made a demo record for $250 and shipped to Zanuck in France, after which he received a telex, "Dear Paul, there will be music."The theme is quite simple but yet conveys a martial feel. The movie opens with the familiar opening four notes of Beethovens 5th symphony that interesting corresponds to the morse code letter of V-3 dots and a dash. The Cotton Phoenix is the first part of the two-part work "Metropolis of the East" and describes the influence of the textile industry on the development of Enschede. The composition begins introducing the Enschede-theme. After a big fire, the city rises from the ashes and the textile industry reaches a peak. The second part describes the liberation after the war, where Enschede, thanks to the industry, is able to recover. The piece ends with the Enschede-theme; the city in its present form.

ON RATCLIFF HIGHWAY (Brass Band Set) - Ray Steadman-Allen
Written for the centenary of Salvation Army bands in 1978, On Ratcliff Highway was premiered by The International Staff Band (and simultaneously by Melbourne Staff Band in another venue). It was inspired by a sketch on the front page of a copy of The War Cry from 1886 which depicted the Whitechapel Salvation Army band marching through the notorious highway, surrounded by crowds, with the masts of ships seen beyond the East London slums.

During their childhood, some people have the tradition to put their toys, drawings and wishes for the future into a timebox that they bury somewhere to dig up when they are adults. This has inspired Gauthier Dupertuis for the title of this work: Postcards from tomorrow. What wishes would we put in those boxes for the future; what kind of postcards would we send to our grandchildren? To compose this work, Gauthier Dupertuis was also inspired by three pictures that have some symbolic meaning linked to the question above and that give the names to the three movements that make up this piece.The first movement, Abandoned Blockhouses, refers to war and other horrors in the history of humanity, while Pagoda at the Lake, the second movement, was inspired by the pagoda, a religious building whose function is to house the relics of holy people in Asian worship. The third and last movement, Building Bridges, is a call for hope. In July 221, Postcards from Tomorrow was awarded the first prize at the "La Bacchetta d'Oro" international composition contest in Italy.

A Manchester Tale' depicts life in the City of Manchester in the years surrounding the Second World War and the effect these years had on the citizens of Manchester. Towards the end of the piece there is an optional part for a wartime siren which announces the start of an air raid attack. £24.95Lest We Forget - Christopher Bond
Lest We Forget is a phrase added as a final line at the end of the Ode of Remembrance, taken from Laurence Binyon's poem For the Fallen, first published in The Times newspaper in September 1914. Providing the title for this work for brass band, the piece aims to combine both the acoustic nature of the brass band medium alongside narrated passages and pre-recorded extracts to provide a moving tribute. The words originally spoken by Prime Minister Herbert Asquith in 1914 can be narrated in performance. However, a free audio download, manipulated to sound like a 1914 radio broadcast is available from Prima Vista. Lest We Forget received its premiere at The Sage, Gateshead, on November 17th 2014, performed by the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, conducted by Robert Childs. The work opened their winning Brass in Concert programme, and has since been performed by bands all over the world as a fitting tribute to the Great War.

CANADIAN, The (Brass Band Set) - James Merritt
The centrepiece of this decidedly patriotic and stately march is the Canadian anthem 'O Canada' although the original score (1932) refers to a different set of words ('O Canaan'). The anthem is presented in successively more ornate fashion in the trio section, the musical drama building like a Sousa march so that a da capo is not required. While now considered to be bit of a 'war horse', the march remains great fun to play.
