Sketches from Nowhere is the second composition that Thomas Doss has written for brass band. The title was inspired by various images the composer saw in his mind's eye while working on this piece: pictures of foreign places; pictures of the creation of our world. The main motif that weaves its way from the beginning to the end of the work is meant to parallel humanity's great evolution: from its humble beginnings as mere stardust to the present day.

No concert programme is complete these days without a hymn tune being given the treatment that only a brass band sound can deliver. It is therefore refreshing when a lesser known work becomes available for bands to perform. This Swiss traditional melody has grown in popularity over the last decade and is heard in churches across the globe sang to the words 'My Faith It Is An Oaken Staff' by Thomas Lynch. This setting by Gavin Somerset uses the full colours of the brass band spectrum and allows several instrumentalists the chance shine in this warm and entertaining work with a big finish ending.

This year, the British Bandsman ran a March Composition Competion with the winning enteries judged by Paul Hindmarsh, Michael Fowles, and Aidan Smith. the March, 'The Volunteer' is a pastiche contest March and was the winning entry in the 'Category 1' tier, composed in dedication to all of the volunteers who work tirelessly to make the Whit Friday march contests possible. The march was written with upper section bands in mind and aims be a complete showcase for a band's contest performance. In doing so, the music follows the form and style of contest marches popularised by great march composers George Allan, Thomas "T. J." Powell and William Rimmer. In Charge was commissioned by the Home Guard Band of Eksjo to honour Thomas Samuelsson, whose efforts with the orchestra have been of great significance. He was a driving person within Swedish military music and furthermore project manager for Eksjo International Tattoo. Thomas worked at Eksjo Energy and the title of this work hints both to his occupation and his administrative leadership in the band. The first part of this concert march concentrates a lot on syncopation, while the second part is more robust with a traditional and lyrical trio part. In Charge was premiered by the Home Guard Band of Eksjo on the 22th of December 2018, conducted by Maria Sandberg.

The source of inspiration for this composition was the so-called 'genetic code'. Something which is universal, as almost all organisms on our planet use the same code for their genetic information and therefore speak the same 'language', as it were. The fact that plants, animals, and humans are all subject to the universality of this code fascinates the composer time and time again. Thus, he has chosen a musical motif for this phenomenon, which has been woven through the various musical passages of this work like a genetic thread.Genetic Code was commissioned by the Swiss Brass Band Association to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Swiss Brass Band Championships, in 2025, and to be the compulsory piece in the Excellence Division that same year.

Pulse is a solo work for euphonium and brass band. As the title suggests, this piece is very rhythmic in nature. Pulse represents life and vitality, which also characterises the work. The tempo remains virtually constant throughout the piece. Even during the cadenza, played by the euphonium, the pulse of the timpani continues to beat steadily. Even though the piece stays at a constant tempo, it can be performed at half speed.
