For centuries hilltop beacon fires blazed across the land signals of important happenings or warnings of invasion. This music tells no specific story but the titles of the four thematically related sections are a guide to the idea: The Beacons; Far Horizons; The Invaders; Celebration. The first movement has something of the character of the march and the fanfare; spirited and tightly driving, it promises most of the thematic material of the work. The second is largelt tranquil and is thinly scores with solo passages. The third has the most dramatic potential; its energy and conflict subsides to a lament and a tolling bell before a vigorous rounding off. Appropriately, the fourth movement is in a merry-making mood, and the jubilant music concludes with fragment statements of the main themes. The Beacons was first performed by IMI Yorkshire Imperial Band (James Scott) at the 'Concert of the Century', celebrating the Centenary of the British Bandsman, at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester, on 5 September 1987. Richard Strauss (1864 - 1949) was a famous conductor and composer when he wrote Feierlicher Einzug der Ritter des Johanniter-Ordens (Solemn Entrance of the Knights of the Order of Saint John) in 1909. One of only a handful of his works written exclusively for winds, Strauss composed Feierlicher Einzug for the investiture ceremonies of the Order of St. John, a Christian military order that was founded in Jerusalem in 1023 to care for poor, sick, or injured pilgrims journeying to the Holy Land.Strauss scored Feierlicher Einzug (TrV 224) for a large ensemble of fifteen trumpets, four horns, four trombones, two tubas and timpani. He saw enough potential in its stately character and majestic conclusion to produce a version for symphony orchestra with organ and it has been arranged for a variety of brass ensembles with or without organ since then.This version for British style brass band was adapted from the original in 1990 by Paul Hindmarsh for the exclusive use of Besses o' th' Barn Band, of which he was then the musical director. Wade in the Water is a Negro Spiritual made popular in 1962 by the Ramsey Lewis Trio. Further versions followed in 1968 by Big Mama Thornton and in 1997 by Eva Cassidy. The song is thought to be a coded message for slaves escaping to freedom and tells the fugitive to walk in the water, instead of on the land, where tracking dogs cannot follow human scent. This version for brass band is in swing style.

The arrangement deals with various well known songs for male choir such as A Trun sut igl ischi (In Trun under the malpe tree), Si sededesta Rezia (Wake up, land of Raetia), Il pur suveran (The independent farmer) or Il paun palus (The rosted bread). An atmospheric beginning over a pedal point uses quotations from these songs and leads eventually into a dark but warmly orchestrated section on Nossa viarva (Our language) by H. Erni. The piece ends, once more quoting A Trun sut igl ischi by J. Heim, a dedication to struggle for freedom and independence.
