£30.00Leviathan - Paul Denegri
Leviathan began its evolution as a workshop work inspired by the poem written by Heathcote Williams entitled; Whale Nation. At the time of this workshop the tentet brass repertoire existed of extremely well written original or arranged works of a lighter nature but there was a shortage of works with a greater emotional depth and edge, hence Leviathan's early conception as an atmospheric and emotive work. The workshop piece explored whale sound and song and was a 25-minute work in two parts. After many years of the workshop sketches sitting dormant the new work Leviathan is a much shorter and concise work. It contains only one of the original melodic themes of the workshop work. Leviathan is driven and underpinned by melodic and rhythmic elements. It is a programmed work following the awe inspiring majestic might and beauty of whales through to a hunt scene, the chase and the ultimate demise of earth's largest mammal.

£30.00Los Canarios - Gaspar Sanz
Gaspar Sanz (1640-1710) "The Master of the Spanish Baroque Guitar" was an Aragonese composer, guitarist, organist, teacher and priest born to a wealthy family in Calanda near Teurel. He studied music, theology and philosophy at the University of Salamanca, where he was later appointed Professor of Music. He wrote three volumes of works and studies for the Baroque guitar that form an important part of today's classical guitar repertory. The ninety guitar works he wrote included works both for the punted (pluck) and rasqueado (strummed) styles. He was also well known as a poet and writer. The Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo composed his famous "Fantasia para un Gentilhombre" on themes taken from Sanz's guitar works.

Hickory Mice - Len Jenkins - Len Jenkins
Based on the well-known tune of 'Hickory Dickory Dock', which as kids we all knew, the mice get up to their usual adventures. Frenetic activity is followed by staggering exhaustion, or perhaps they got at the booze...Then the party really gets going, with references to various dance themes (and the behaviour of the visually impaired trio), even taking in the baroque and a stately minuet. Exhausted!

In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries the 'fantasia' or 'pot-pourri' was a popular genre built on a selection of hit tunes of the day. Hummel wrote three such works, for guitar, cello, and viola; this arrangement is based on a shortened version of the work for viola and orchestra. The original, published as Hummel's Opus 94, dates from about 1820 and includes themes from Mozart's Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro, Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail, and Rossini's Tancredi.

For centuries hilltop beacon fires blazed across the land signals of important happenings or warnings of invasion. This music tells no specific story but the titles of the four thematically related sections are a guide to the idea: The Beacons; Far Horizons; The Invaders; Celebration. The first movement has something of the character of the march and the fanfare; spirited and tightly driving, it promises most of the thematic material of the work. The second is largelt tranquil and is thinly scores with solo passages. The third has the most dramatic potential; its energy and conflict subsides to a lament and a tolling bell before a vigorous rounding off. Appropriately, the fourth movement is in a merry-making mood, and the jubilant music concludes with fragment statements of the main themes. The Beacons was first performed by IMI Yorkshire Imperial Band (James Scott) at the 'Concert of the Century', celebrating the Centenary of the British Bandsman, at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester, on 5 September 1987. I - Fanfare & ThemeII - SongIII - HymnIV - Toccata & FinaleA Gallimaufry Suite consists of four movements, all thematically independent. The first movement consists of a sparkling Fanfare followed by a stately Theme which ends quietly. The second movement is a Children's Song; quirky but cute, and the Hymn which follows is a study in calm and tranquillity, featuring a quartet-group of cornet, baritone, trombone and euphonium. The last movement is a virtuosic Toccata which eventually begins to recall the other themes of the suite before a grand reprise of the first movement Theme brings the work to a dazzling conclusion.Approximate duration: 11 minutes
