£59.95Festival Suite (Brass Band - Score and Parts)
This three movement suite for brass band was commissioned by the Solothurnischer Blasmusikverband (SOBV) in Switzerland for their 2009 Festival. The first movement, Energy, is appropriately lively in character. It is dominated by an agitated theme on trombones and cornets, driven by a percussion accompaniment, and complemented by pulsating counterpoint from the rest of the band. The second movement is called Repose and its opening melodious theme on cornets provides a welcome respite from the restlessness and verve of the opening movement. The lyrical nature of the music is sustained throughout. The finale, Suspense, opens with a theme containing more than a hint of foreboding which recurs several times. There are numerous abrupt changes of dynamics, and also a brightening of mood, before everything finishes in a blaze of sound.

£59.00Balkan Gipsies - Paul Voet
Gipsies are wizards with the fiddle. Eastern European folk musicians and gipsies are using a lot of brass in their music. Their brass ensembles are very impressive, so the link to brassbands is quickly made. Based on the folk theme of Manea Tsigailor all cornets join the theme in an up tempo 7/8 bar. Gathered around a campfire gipsies are telling stories and making music. When the lower brass is telling their story all others clap hands. All of a sudden a cornet soloist appears. When we return to the basic theme the story ends with some dazzling bars.

2011 Butlins 3rd SectionHungerford Town was commissioned by Tim Crouter and the Hungerford Town Band.The piece is in four movements played through without a break:The Black Prince: Opens with a short motif on which most of the following music is based. The music settles down into a mysterious mood that builds to the first transformation of the opening theme. The music is solid and rugged.The Coach Road: Hungerford was always a popular resting place for the horse drawn coaches on the way to London. The music is light and cheerful and features the soprano cornet and solo horn as postilions.St. Lawrence's Church: The previous motif from the first baritone becomes the main theme for this section that gives plenty of scope for warm and expressive playing. Music from the start of the suite is heard before it moves into a celebratory march.The Bear: The Bear Is a local inn frequented by travellers. The opening theme is heard again and brings the work to a triumphant close.Suitable for 4th Section Bands and above

£66.00Spiral - Marc Jeanbourquin
Marc Jeanbourquin composed 'Spiral' during a music camp, for himself and 9 other fellow musicians. Due to the success of this piece, some years later, he has taken the main theme and developed it, with a kind of tribute to Camille Saint-Saens, one of his favourite composers. The constant changes between the minor and major keys, and between the often changing 2 and 3 feeling, with the occasional 2/4 bar thrown in, do not disrupt the flow of the piece in the slightest; in fact it is what has inspired the title. A percussion interlude, which is broken up by the unregularly occurring meter, brings the piece to a restatement of the original theme, which then ends in a large crescendo. Spiral is perfectly suited to either the opening or the close of any concert.

In the first movement, a gentle lyric theme, set against a pulsating background is contrasted with a dance. The dance reaches its climax and the music concludes with a quiet theme. The second movement has something of the nature of a sarabande, with a central section, which is a little lighter but retains a Spanish flavour. The composer adds a whimsical thought of his own that there may also have been a party of monks aboard. A variety of ingredients blend in the third movement: the coaster engines, the sea, some jovial shanty-music and the storm element through which the coaster steadily chugs.Suitable for Championship Section bands.

Dedicated to the North American Brass Band Association, this is music that is full of energy and dynamic extremes. In form it draws from the overture style, although the themes are self-existing and the piece is programmatic. Working well as a festival opener, it sets a mood of excitement. Following the rhythmic fanfares of the opening, the first theme is presented in the cornets followed by a return to the same rhythmic material. A second theme appears in the horn section and is developed, changing into a darker and sinister form of the same motif. Eventually a Maestoso section is reached, full of sustained block chords in the cornets and trombones, as the rest of the band counters with cascading lines that weave straight through the brighter instruments. Jews in Eastern Europe always had their typical music. Links with gipsy music are never far away. Starting with 3 cadenzas, each for cornet, euphonium and tenorhorn the band has to deal with a difficult and very fast theme of 'Der yid in Yerusholayim'. Virtuosi horns, baritone and flugelhorn often answer the main theme by cornets and euphoniums. Quick drum patterns accompany the whole movement. Growing to a raging climax at the end all possible is asked from the bandsmen as to technique and endurance.
