This piece attempts to portray atmospheric pictures through music. The opening section evokes the somewhat misty and hazy early morning atmosphere surrounding the ancient monument. When the band reaches its first dynamic climax it is as if the massive boulders are audible, even touchable through the use of minor 3rd chords. The main theme - constructed on the notes CAFBG symbolises the arrangement of the central boulders in the shape of a horseshoe, which forms the focal point of this huge collection of stones. Towards the end of the work you will experience a fantastic effect when five soloists play a five part hymn whilst other members of the band create a specialatmosphere by imitating a choir of monks and druids. A fantastic major new concert work for advanced bands.

Dag Wiren (1905 1986) studied organ and composition at the College of Music in Stockholm 1926 1931, and lived in Paris 1931 1934, where he continued his studies in composition and instrumentation. His list of works comprises mainly instrumentalmusic, such as five symphonies, five string quartets, several overtures and quite a lot of music for film and theatre. Serenade for String Orchestra, Op. 11, was premiered by Stockholm Chamber Orchestra under Tobias Wilhemi, in October 1937,and was an immediate success. The Serenade has four movements, and the finishing Marcia has gained great popularity, especially after it was theme tune for the television series Monitor, which wasaired 1958 1965.

This composition consists of three sound pictures. Numerous associations mutually link those parts as far as motifs and harmony are concerned. The motif of the ascending and descending fourth plays an important role in many a theme. There are many fourth chords by means of which I try to put a harmonic and unifying stamp on the composition as a whole. Moreover there are similar or identical, though varied, motifs in the successive parts. The first part 'Cortege' (Procession) describes the dignified majestic procession by means of simple, precise rhythms. At first, the music is scarcely audible, as if coming from a distance; it gradually comes nearer until it reaches its climax in large chords, before fading away again. At each quarter note one could imagine a step. The second part 'Dialogue' consists in broad outlines of dialogues between the different orchestral groups. Some instruments are asking questions, others are giving answers. After a rather sad passage, the music turns into a climax followed by a second passage that brings comfort and leads to a quiet ending. In the third part, there is a sudden movement coming up in the shape of 'Waves'. The principle of the wave, successively swelling and decreasing, dominates the entire musical structure of this part, even in the separate motifs.Oliver Waespi

Laura - David Raskin - Mark Freeh
David Raksin was active in the music business for so many decades that he was thought by many to be the Grandfather of film music. Raksin created notable scores for films such as Forever Amber and The Bad and the Beautiful, though he is best known for the soundtrack to Laura, where the lead character is always represented by the same theme, an "idee fixe". Tylman Susato (circa 1500-1561) was one of the worlds first music publishers and seller of musical instruments. He left behind several collections containing arrangements of Dutch songs and dance and also published several of his own works. Three of these, published in 1551, were called Musyck Boexken, or music book. Almost 500 years later, Jan de Haan has used one of these melodies, Mohrentanz, for this theme with three variations.
