This arrangement of O Little Town of Bethlehem is based on the beloved carol text by Phillips Brooks (1835-1893), set to the familiar St. Louis tune composed by Lewis Redner in 1868. Originally written for a Christmas Sunday school service, the melody famously came to Redner in a dream the night before it was needed - an origin story that mirrors the spontaneous inspiration behind this brass band setting. Fendall Hill's arrangement was prepared for Sovereign Brass (Wednesbury, England) and included in their 2023 Christmas CD. Lyrical and reverent, this version captures the timeless beauty of the carol while offering a fresh voice for modern brass ensembles. "Nearer, My God, to Thee" is a 19th-century Christian hymn which retells a story from 'Genesis': "So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it..."The hymn was also used by other composers like Carl Nielsen and Charles Ives, and was played by the string ensemble on the movie 'Titanic' when the vessel sank.This arrangement is based on the beautiful BYO choir version and Mike Kilmartin did a great job making a lovely band version of it.

In common with most of my larger works, the piece is not programmatic, but purely abstract; there is no extra-musical story. The choice of title chimes with my view of how composers can often develop. There can be no 'destination' in a composer's career, but rather a continuing journey to an unknown place. From piece to piece a composer needs to decide his or her next steps, never really knowing where they might lead. As Frost so eloquently describes, these sorts of instinctive decisions guide all our lives.

EUPHONY (Euphonium Solo with Brass Band Set) - Robert Redhead
Previously only available in manuscript form, this euphonium solo with brass band accompaniment is now available in printed format. Euphony (meaning a pleasant, sweet sound) is based on the tunes of Sidney Cox with material taken from the songs; 'He found me', 'This one thing I know', 'You can tell out the sweet story' and 'Deep and wide'. At the time of writing, the composer remarked; 'The euphonium is often associated with melodies and harmonies that lend themselves to pleasing sounds'. That is true of this solo but it also presents considerable technical challenges for the soloist in terms of range and technique.
