ABOUT THIS PIECE: 'God Put a Smile Upon Your Face' was written by all members of the band Coldplay for their second studio album 'A Rush of Blood to the Head'. Coldplay vocalist Chris Martin said: "The song came out of playing live and wanting to have something with a bit more bounce". The chart was originally released in 2003 to critical acclaim. In 2007 Mark Ronson covered the song on his album 'Version' - it is this version this arrangement is based upon. The following arrangement was devised as a concert opener - written as such to allow different sections of the band to make their way to the stage one at a time. The suggested stage entry directions for this arrangement are: Percussion > Basses > Trombones > Horns & Baritones > Cornets & Euphonium. St. Louis Blues - William C. Handy - Oystein S. Heimdal
This song was composed by W. C. Handy and published in 1914.The style is typical blues and it has been a standard for jazz-musicians for decades.Many famous musicians and singers has recorded- and performed it. Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, Count Basie and Glenn Miller are among the greatest ones.This arrangement switch between 6/8 and 2/4 time signature bur the tempo is the same throughout the piece. The arrangement is suitable for both marching and concert purpose. When performed at a concert, the drum kit can be used instead of separate snare drum, bass drum and cymbals.

This piece for solo baritone and brass band and lasts for just over six minutes. It is in four different sections with themes returning throughout. The four sections represent the four seasons of the marsh. The inspiration came from frequent walks over these now world famous marshes (recently the quickest ever traverse of a coocoo from Africa to Europe was recorded by a bird from Carlton). It starts with spring and then moves to, an at first, angry summer, then we have the gentleness of autumn which moves into the crispness of winter. The soloist would need to be of at least grade 7 standard and it requires, however briefly, for the soloist to attain a top D.

This march was written for the Loddon brass band as their signature march. This commission was undertaken in 2007 and is an example of a standard contest march. One of the main inspirations for this composition was the reading of the role of lost servicemen and women during the remembrance day service. The phrase was later used "Loddon the brave" which has been used in the rhythm of the main theme of the piece.

Bernie's Tune is a 1953 jazz standard with music written by Bernie Miller and lyrics by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. It was popularised through a recording by the quartet of the American saxophonist and composer Gerry Mulligan, and the tune was a popular choice for musicians jamming at the time. Information about the composer is scarce. All that people really know of him is that he was a piano player from Washington DC. Gerry Mulligan's version was subsequently arranged by the late, legendary John Dankworth and this arrangement for brass band has been faithfully based on it to evoke the atmosphere of that golden era.

'Hallelujah' is probably the most widely known Cohen composition and has been covered many times, most notably by Jeff Buckley. Hallelujah is often considered the most famous secular hymn, finding further popularity through its use in 2001 motion picture, Shrek, alongside its use in countless other film and television productions. This is a beautiful addition to the brass band repertoire and is suitable for bands of fourth section standard and higher.
