£44.95Wall of Sound
This piece was commissioned by Dr Nicholas Childs and Philip Biggs for the National Children's Band of Great Britain.As the commission was for a youth band, I wanted to compose a piece of music that alluded to the styles and genres of music that are abundant in the current popular music market. However, the National Children's Band isn't just any old youth band; they are some of the finest young musicians in Great Britain. So the challenge was to compose a piece that included many popular music styles whilst providing enough of a test to keep the music technically interesting to work on and perform.The driving force behind the whole piece is the percussion section and in particular, the drum kit which is constant throughout. From the start the music is rhythmic and repetitive, similar to many dance tracks. The music begins to slowly unfold and build in texture and at bar 24 the syncopated main theme appears. This theme reappears throughout the piece along with various other motifs and solo lines. The music uses the styles, rock, pop, latin, funk and dance within the score and has a real fun factor about it.There are lots of opportunities for soloists to play and it is marked in the score where to stand and soloists can come out to the front of the stage. I really enjoyed working on this piece and I'm sure performers and audience members will enjoy it too.Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Based on a poem by Gustaf Froding, King Lily of the Valley is a poetic and regal musical tribute to the delicate flower that, in Froding's verse, appears as a young king surrounded by both sorrow and beauty. Originally composed by David Wikander and arranged for male choir (TTBB) by Rasmus Krigstrom, this evocative work has been masterfully reimagined for brass band by Norwegian arranger and composer Espen Wallacher Haukas and created for Bjorsvik Brass's performance at Siddis Brass 2025. The brass band version retains the choral character and emotional depth of the original, weaving lush harmonies and lyrical phrasing into a rich soundscape. A deeply expressive addition to any brass band repertoire - blending Nordic choral tradition with the grandeur and warmth of the brass band sound. DURATION: 4 minutes. DIFFICULTY: Moderate. 'As The World Falls Apart' was composed for David Maxted as part of the programme for his BMus Final Recital at the RNCM in May 2017. The work was composed in a time of real political and social divide, with chaos only ever seeming minutes away, and the base of the piece is one of serenity and traniquility amongst the bedlam which is occurring around us all. Originally, the work was planned to be a totally free unaccompanied work for solo horn, however I wanted to make use of the vast space the RNCM concert hall can offer with the surround-sound speakers and decided to utilise a short sound effect track to enhance the feeling of chaos as the music reaches it's peak in dynamic and intensity. Sinfonietta: The Town Beneath the Cliff was commissioned by Holmestrand Ungdomskorps from Vestfold in Norway. The work is in four movements: a spectacular fanfare followed by a 'moto perpetuo'-like toccata. The third movement Hymn is a beautiful piece of music allowing the band to show its musicality and sound. The last movement Scherzo Finale opens with a short phrase from Holmestrand's own 'town song' Holmestrandsangen, which comes again in full at the end of the piece, accompanied by a florid passage based on the opening theme.

Sunday in the Park was written for tenor horn virtuoso Sheona White, and commissioned by her partner, Matt Wade, as a Christmas present.Composer Philip Sparke had known and admired Sheona's playing for many years, having produced her first solo CD and written pieces for her previously.Both composer and performer are huge fans of the late Karen Carpenter, Sheona in part modelling her sound on the singer's sultry voice; so it was decided that this new solo would be a piece which, whilst not being a 'Carpenters' pastiche, paid tribute to their relaxed style and rich harmonic language. Sunday in the Park openswith an accompanied cadenza for the soloist, which leads to a gentle rhythmic melody with a laid-back feel. This is taken up by the band but the soloist sparks a change of mood by introducing a faster light rock interlude. This reaches a climax, at which point the music unwinds until the original mood returns.A variation on the original melody leads to a short cadenza from the soloist, which brings the work to a peaceful close.

Entry of the Celts is a delightful light concert opener. As its title implies, this work features Celtic-inspired music. All the instruments in the band are given the opportunity to display their most beautiful sound colours: from the bass section to the cornets, via the tenor horns, euphoniums/baritones and trombones. Each section plays a solo passage, accompanied by percussion instruments. The solo for soprano cornet leads to a sparkling and impressive finale. A wonderful Celtic work that will enchant and delight your audiences.
