This year, the British Bandsman ran a March Composition Competion with the winning enteries judged by Paul Hindmarsh, Michael Fowles, and Aidan Smith. the March, 'The Volunteer' is a pastiche contest March and was the winning entry in the 'Category 1' tier, composed in dedication to all of the volunteers who work tirelessly to make the Whit Friday march contests possible. The march was written with upper section bands in mind and aims be a complete showcase for a band's contest performance. In doing so, the music follows the form and style of contest marches popularised by great march composers George Allan, Thomas "T. J." Powell and William Rimmer. Journey in the Jungle - Max Stannard
This piece was written to book end the performance of Friezland Band at the inaugural Red Admiral Entertainment Contest where they won the Most Entertaining Programme Award. The composition starts with an exciting jungle feel, which has different sections starting one at a time, giving the option of players walking on stage whilst playing. The lively start is followed by the more menacing section as night begins to fall. There is then a frantic dash to the end in an attempt to escape the jungle.

In The Pines - Traditional - Max Stannard
Whilst the song may not be familiar with some, this traditional American folk song is believed to date back to the 1870's. With various other titles including 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night?' and 'Black Girl', this work has been recorded by numerous artists over the years and was in 1993, introduced to a new generation when it was performed by the US band, Nirvana. Max Stannard's haunting setting brings your audience in with the haunting melody before shifting gears into a great jazz-waltz section. Featuring several soloists, this is a great entertainment items and a good showcase for concerts and contests.
