As Europe struggled to recover from the aftermath of the war to end all wars a generation of young immigrants looked to the USA for the opportunity of improved prospects and a better life.Voyage to Worlds Unknown seeks to capture the mixture of emotions of this epic sea voyage and as such is unashamedly programmatic in character. The work follows a clearly defined timeline in five continuous sections:

With such rich and diverse sources of music across several counties and centuries, this has quite understandably become one of Hess's most popular works to date. Shelter Island is the first movement of East Coast Pictures. It is a depiction of the Shelter Island itself, a few hours' drive east of New York. In the summer it becomes a crowded tourist trap; but in the winter it is gloriously deserted and bravely faces the onslaught of the turbulent Atlantic, shrouded in sea mists and driving rain. This 'picture' is a fond memory of a winter weekend on Shelter Island. Suitable for Premier Youth/2nd Section Bands and above. Duration: 6.00

Three connected movements each with their own character. Prelude is energetic and riving, featuring highly syncopated melodies and frequent changes of key and phrase length. The central Toccata is a series of traditional cadenzas for cornet and euphonium that ends ina virtuoso duet for the two soloist and leads directly into the Fugue. The baroque-style fugue keeps breaking out into episodes of 'Swingle' bebop. THREE ANCIENT CUSTOMS (Brass Band Score) - Cole, R Huw
2012 National Championships Finals - Third Section. Huw Cole's three-movement work depicts the customs of Wales and the West of England. The traditions are couched in the movements titles: Cwrw Bach; Mari Lwyd; Wassail. The finale offers a grand climax in the festive spirit of a wassail, before transforming into a sea shanty in homage to Gloucester's dependence on the River Severn.
