ABOUT THIS PIECE: Cantatio are pleased to release this hymn meditation on the much-loved hymn by Adam D J Taylor. Commissioned by the world famous Wingates Band, this arrangement became a centrepiece of the band's online presence during the COVID pandemic. Story time... Horatio Spafford was a successful attorney and real estate investor who lost a fortune in the great Chicago fire of 1871. Around the same time, his beloved four-year-old son died of scarlet fever. Thinking a vacation would do his family some good, he sent his wife and four daughters on a ship to England, planning to join them after he finished some pressing business at home. However, while crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the ship was involved in a terrible collision and sunk. More than 200 people lost their lives, including all four of Horatio Spafford's precious daughters. His wife, Anna, survived the tragedy. Upon arriving in England, she sent a telegram to her husband that began: "Saved alone. What shall I do?" Horatio immediately set sail for England. At one point during his voyage, the captain of the ship, aware of the tragedy that had struck the Spafford family, summoned Horatio to tell him that they were now passing over the spot where the shipwreck had occurred. As Horatio thought about his daughters, words of comfort and hope filled his heart and mind. He wrote them down, and they have since become a well-beloved hymn: When peace like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll-- Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say It is well, it is well with my soul. Danceries (Set II) - Kenneth Hesketh
Danceries Set II, arranged for brass band, was first commission by Keith Allen for the Birmingham Symphonic Winds. This second set of Danceries continues the format, established in the popular Danceries (Set I), of using tunes and dances from Playford's Dancing Master (17th century) to form the basis of an extended dancesuite. In this set, the melodies have become more abstracted and project only a distant echo of their original forms. As before, each movement is self-contained, colourful and direct, with its own distinct mood.The outer movements - Jennie's Bawbee and Peascod's Galliarda - share driving percussion with a military air. Tom Tinker's Toye and Heart's Ease (movements two and three) are both settings of original melodies. All movements are more extended than in the first set, with a freer use and approach to the material; melodies now occur in various keys and are supported by a greater variety of harmonic colouring. The result is a richer, even more exhilarating set of dances.

Sonate for Tenor Quartet - Geert Jan Kroon
I wrote this Sonata for the euphoniums and baritones of Brass Band Pro Rege Heerenveen. It uses the characteristics of the instruments in a not so well known idiom. Sonata for tenor quartet is an octatonic work. The work consists of four parts: 'Allegro con Brio', 'Andante', 'Scherzo' and 'Rondo Allegro'. Ostinatos and fugal elements are prominent in the work. The range and virtuosity of the euphonium and the flexibility of the baritone are ten fully utilized in this work.

'As A Cloud..' is a work for Solo Baritone and Piano composed for Nick Wilson in 2021. The inspiration for the work comes from the words of the poet William Wordsworth and his much loved text "I wandered lonely as a cloud". In the process of writing this work, the dedicatee's desire was to have a work to reflect his passion for the Lake District - a part of Northern England which Wordworth (and several other renowned poets of the time) became synonymous with; the group of writers becoming known as 'The Lake Poets'. Musically, this programmtic work reflects the words from Wordsworth's text, painting each line of the first stanza in a variety of settings and moods before the work floats away with an audio extract from the poem itself.

COMPOSER: Neil LockThis march was submitted to the march composers' competition for "Bandamonium 3"in Hatherleigh, Devon in July 2024. The winning march was played by massed bands at the conclusion of the celebrations on Saturday 27th July 2024. Unfortunately, this march took second place in the competition, behind the march of Paul Pennicotte-Henrie, conductor of Okehampton Silver Band.The march can be played with or without the singing. (Even at the Whit Friday marches, begad!) I suggest that it should be introduced by 3-beat rolls.When played with singing, the "Bandamonium" lyrics (bars 10-13 and 56-57) are to be sung by all players, keeping to their own parts, with appropriate octave adjustment for their individual singing voices. Conductor and percussionists should sing with the main theme (Db and C at bars 10-13, F at 56-57). Listen to the 3rd cornet players!There is an additional part for Singers, in which the trio melody (bars 58 onwards) can be sung by Soprano and Tenor singers at a moderate choir standard. An octave-down option is also provided in the higher bars. This part can be given to "spare" singers within the band, or to singers external to the band if opportunity permits. £70.00Three Pictures for Band - Oliver Waespi
This composition consists of three sound pictures. Numerous associations mutually link those parts as far as motifs and harmony are concerned. The motif of the ascending and descending fourth plays an important role in many a theme. There are many fourth chords by means of which I try to put a harmonic and unifying stamp on the composition as a whole. Moreover there are similar or identical, though varied, motifs in the successive parts. The first part 'Cortege' (Procession) describes the dignified majestic procession by means of simple, precise rhythms. At first, the music is scarcely audible, as if coming from a distance; it gradually comes nearer until it reaches its climax in large chords, before fading away again. At each quarter note one could imagine a step. The second part 'Dialogue' consists in broad outlines of dialogues between the different orchestral groups. Some instruments are asking questions, others are giving answers. After a rather sad passage, the music turns into a climax followed by a second passage that brings comfort and leads to a quiet ending. In the third part, there is a sudden movement coming up in the shape of 'Waves'. The principle of the wave, successively swelling and decreasing, dominates the entire musical structure of this part, even in the separate motifs.Oliver Waespi

To thy strong bidding, task Ariel and all his quality. - William Shakespeare: The Tempest, Act 1, Scene 2Ariel was written for the Hammonds Band to open their programme at the 2019 Brass in Concert Championships at The Sage Concert Hall in Gateshead, where it received its premiere. The title is taken from the character in Shakespeare's play 'The Tempest'. Ariel is an immensely powerful "air spirit" or demon bound to serve Prospero, the exiled Duke of Milan, after being released by Prospero from imprisonment in a tree. In the play Ariel's magical abilities are used to help Prospero revenge himself on his enemies and reclaim his dukedom, whereupon Ariel finally regains his freedom.You can hear an audio preview and follow the score below: Performance notes:The cornets and horns are split into two "choirs" to be placed left and right of the band. It may be possible for the choirs to play their opening flourish offstage, and the optional repeated sections in the opening are to accommodate stage movement if required. Trombones form a third "choir" which should ideally stand centrally between basses and percussion, and the euphoniums and baritones should sit in front of the basses. The work requires four percussionists, although if four are not available the 2nd part may be omitted.Percussion 1: Kit - bass drum, snare, 3 x toms, hi-hat, suspended cymbal - and 3 x temple blocksPercussion 2: Tam tam and orchestral bass drum.Percussion 3: Glockenspiel and timpaniPercussion 4: Tubular bellsSoprano, solo cornets and 3rd cornets require cup mutes. The song went to no. 1 on the Billboard charts and stayed there for two weeks.Produced by David Foster, the song was given a typical early 80's sound with synthesizers and heavy guitars dominating the sound. The album-version of the song included a part two of the song; "Get Away", a up-tempo song featuring the famous horn-section of the band.

Celebration for Band - John Brakstad
Many Norwegian bands have grown up around factories; but Norwegian factories are often located in the countrysides - by a fjord or lake, by a river or waterfall that provided power for the factory.The factory was the foundation for the existence of the community, but it was also essential for the community's cultural life; choirs, bands etc. (cp. British brass bands and mining)."Celebration for band" tries to give a picture of the environment and life around a band like this, with both factory noise and the natural world (Pastorale), as well as the challenges and development of the band itself.The composition is built up of five connected episodes:- Fanfare and Prologue (concludes with a feeling of the untamed power of the river) - Pastorale I: " At the river"- Intermezzo: " The Factory" (starts with the opening of water for the turbines: snare drum. Factory whistle and bell call to work, and the spinning and weaving machinery starts up.)- Pastorale II: " Summer evening on the fjord." - Finale: " Challenge and Progress"

Continental Divide - Stig Nordhagen
The title is "Continental Divide" and it has nothing to do with tectonic plates, but is another word for "Watershed".It is the place where the the water flows in opposite directions. For example, when you drive up a mountain, the water flows downwards, the same does it when you drive down the other side. On top there is usually a water, and it is in this water, or musical idea if you like,that it is a continental divide. What I intend is that in this piece there are some musical motifs that change character and direction. They can be in the foreground and carry the play, or they may be in the background as a countermeasure. It can also be from horizontal lines to vertical.Or rhythmical patterns that dont find their match until far into the piece.
