Partita for Solo Euphonium and Brass BandThe Four Elements was written for Gary Curtin and the Black Dyke Band as part of a recording project of Martin Ellerby's brass band music. The composer, having previously written a large scale concerto for the euphonium, decided to write something much more concise though still enabling the soloist to display flair and lyricism in equal measure. Each movement is approximately 2 minutes long, a set of miniatures, based on the four elements of earth, water, air and fire, and are given their Latin manes of terra, aqua, aer and ignis in the score. The term partita is used to indicate that the work is a collection, or suite, of pieces and in keeping with former examples, uses both song and dance forms to provide suitable musical structures.Duration: 8.00

This work was written for the 125th anniversary of Boscombe Band, celebrated in November 2011, and is the title track of the band' album released in the same year. The music is celebratory in nature and is dedicated to all those who have served in the band during its 125 year history. The theme of the work is a song by Charles Hutchison Gabriel which was the favourite of the band's librarian, Gerald Whittingham, who was 'promoted to Glory' after a long battle with a brain tumour. The title comes from the last verse, 'When with the ransomed in Glory, his face I at last shall see, 'twill be my joy through the ages, to sing of his love for me'.

The Dreaded Groove and Hook (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Dobson, Simon
The Dreaded Groove and Hook is an up-tempo acid-jazz number that draws inspiration from bands like Jamiroquai and The Youngblood Brass Band. The groove in question is the main tune that is shared round the band, whilst the hook, in 'pop' terms, is the catchy bit of the song. The whole band joins in to play a huge 'riff' that acts as a chorus to the jazz-like verses.The piece was commissioned by Jason Katsikaris and The Leyland Band, who gave the first performance as part of their programme for the Brass in Concert Championships, held at The Sage, Gateshead on the 16th November 2008. Mozart's opera, The Marriage of Figaro, was based on what was a rather scandalous play by Pierre Beaumarchais, because the drama involves an incompetent nobleman being upstaged by a crafty, quick-witted servant named Figaro, in their quest for the same woman. The action takes place in just one day and offers a series of awkward and humorous situations, complete with a vibrant dialogue between the all the main characters. Voi Che Sapete?is performed by Cherubino, who is about to be sent off to the army because the Count finds him a nuisance. When Cherubino appears before the Countess and Susanna to tell them of his fate, this aria is sung at the request of Susanna for a love song. Cherubino is characterized as a young adolescent who is in love with every woman he meets, and because his voice is yet unbroken, he is always played by a female singer.?Duration: 2:30
