Fanfare La Perie - Paul Dukas - Peter Wain

In 1911 the Russian impresario Diaghilev commisioned Paul Dukas to compose music for the famous ballet fairy-tale 'La Perie'by Jean Coralli.Fokine was to make a new choreography, so that the Russian ballet company 'Ballet Russes' would be able to perform the piece in Paris that same year. Due to a quarrel between Diaghilev and Dukas about who should dance the title-part, however, the ballet was not performed by the 'Ballet Russes'but by another company in 1912.The ballet 'La Perie' is Dukas' last symphonic work.

This short opening music was composed on commission of the symphonic band of Jan Van der Roost's village (= Kontich near Antwerp / Belgium). In 1991, this community band celebrated its 100th anniversary. After composing commissioned pieces from different countries (even from Japan), this was the most 'near' commission he ever received indeed! It is a short but varied piece, featuring all sections of the band. After a short introduction, played by the brass instruments, a crisp rhythm starts and boxes the main theme. After a second theme, played by brass and percussion, a short melodical passage brings some 'rest'. At the end, the fanfare of the introduction reoccurs.Although this "Centennial Prelude" isn't a really demanding piece, it sounds colourful and energetic. It has been recorded on CD by the band of the 'Royal Dutch Airforce' and the 'Desford Colliery Brass band'.

Ragnarok Main Title - Magnus Torkehagen Beite - Reid Gilje

This is the main theme from the movie "Gaten Ragnarock" (2013) superbly composed by Norwegian composer Magnus Beite. The music is narrative with long, melodic lines combined with a rhythmic drive. This arrangement tries to capture the symphonic expression from the original orchestral score. There are several unison lines. Intonation, balance and phrasing are important to make these sounding as good as possible. Clear articulation in the rhythmic passages are also important. The piece is very evocative and may fit very well into any concert program.

    Origins - Peter Meechan

Origins is in three movements, with each movement having a different subject matter, all linked by the idea of origins: the first movement refers to musical origins; the second to the origins of life; and the final movement to the space exploration - the research of all origins. The first movement is based on a short motif, heard in the first three notes the soloist plays. These three notes cover the interval of a minor third (an interval that often plays a crucial role in my music) on which the whole concerto is built. The soloist and accompaniment interplay freely throughout the opening section, before an ostinato accompaniment appears - over which the soloist sounds a long legato melody. A short cadenza follows and a return to the opening material leads the movement to an end. The second movement, titled Harry's Song, is - as tradition dictates - a slow movement. Happy and reflective in nature, the main melody was written on the evening that my closest friend, Mark Bousie (a fine euphoniumist himself), and his wife Jayne, had their first child - Harry Bousie. It seemed only fitting that this song should be written for Harry in celebration. The final movement brings me back to a lifelong fascination with space, and in this particular movement, the Space Shuttle Discovery. Having completed 39 missions (including flying the Hubble telescope in to orbit), and spent a total of 365 days in space, SS Discovery made its final voyage in 2011 and was taken to the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. in April 2012. This final movement, titled Discovery, pays tribute to the great shuttle whose missions inspired millions across the generations. Origins was commissioned by Marco Schneider, Adrian Schneider and the Dunshan Symphonic Wind Orchestra, Beijing, China.

    Tarantella - Rossini, G.

Rossini's famous tarantella from The Barber of Seville this is NOT. Taken from 'Sins of My Old Age' this is an 'Aristocratic Tarantella' according to the composer. It is a very high-spirited virtuoso caper, somewhat shortened from the original. (THAT can be found as the Finale in 'Musical Evenings' by Rossini in the Symphonic Brass catalogue.)

    Les Preludes - Phillip Littlemore

Les Pr?ludes is the third of Liszt’s thirteen symphonic poems and by far the most popular. Liszt was the originator of the ‘symphonic poem’, a one-movement orchestral work which bears a relationship to a literary work, a painting, an historical event or a legend. The genre was later adopted by many other composers. Les Pr?ludes opens with a slow introduction, which represents the principal theme, before exploding into a bold and vigorous version dominated by the trombones before giving way to a more lilting version in the horns. The music is developed with martial, romantic and pastoral adaptations before a brilliant coda gives the theme a grand, heroic transformation for a stirring end.? Handel in the Band - Score & Parts - Kenneth Downie

Handel in the Band is a virtuoso set of symphonic variations on one of Handel’s best known keyboard dances, the Sarabande from his Suite in D minor, HWV 437, based on the Spanish traditional dance La Folia. Kenneth Downie’s work was commissioned by Brass Band Treize Etoiles, for performance at the 2013 Swiss National Brass Band Championships, where it was conducted by James Gourlay. The title is a reference to Percy Grainger’s popular Handel in the Strand, and is indicative of the witty and theatrical nature of the music, which is more playful than conventional competition pieces and as such offers different challenges to brass bands as well as being thoroughlyentertaining for audiences.Kenneth Downie is one of the most respected and experienced brass band composers. His music has been widely performed and published throughout the brass band world since the 1960s.
