Variazioni in Blue - Jacob de Haan

Variazioni in Blue is a series of variations in which elements from the Blues, such as the specific 'blue notes', run throughout the piece. Following a stately introduction, which includes part of the theme, is an ornamental variation in 'classical style'. We then hear a variation in 'Blues style", followed by a fast variation with an Eastern European folklore feel. The 'Andante con espressivo' is particularly fine with its attractive harmonic changes. This variation develops into a repeat of the previous folklore variations with its 'major' variation forming a climax towards the end.

    Trimbeka - Carl Wittrock

Trimbeka is a composition which owes its existence to the anniversary of music society "de Vlecke" in Gorredijk. The name Gorredijk originates from "goor" or "gor", which means : bog. Along the marshy peat ran a "dijk" (the Dutch word for dike), called the Gordijk. The name of the village resembles that of the home town of the composer himself, who comes from a town in Twente called Goor. Three streams used to run through the area around Gorredijk. the historical name Trimbeets (Trimbeka), meaning three brooks, recalls this to mind. Gorredijk was a flourishing "Vlecke", i.e. large village, which was situated on an intersection of important connecting roads. The liveliness which this entailed is one of the distinctive elements in Trimbeka. Furthermore, ominous sounds possibly refer to the dangers of the bog, while the resonance of the merriment during the annual fair can also be heard. The slow middle movement is an ode to the beautiful landscape surrounding the village.

    Circus Delight - Dagmar Kildevann

'Circus Delight' is a five-part suite which is set, how could it be otherwise, in a big circus tent. The suite starts with a part called 'Entrance'. The orchestra, positioned above the entrance of the ring asks for the attention of the audience and then the ring announcer enters. The show can begin! The elephants play a central role in the first act. These colossal grey animals are rather slow and perform their tricks in a moderate tempo. ('Elephant Blues') How different are 'The Acrobats'. At high speed they run, jump and fly through the ring, until ....... It gets very exciting. Fortunately, all's well that ends well and they take their leave of the audience at a trot. Everyone knows, and yet it is mostly not spoken about, that when a clown has taken off his red nose and rubbed off his make-up, his face off-stage is not always a happy one. ('Tears of the Clown') The piece ends on a cheerful note with 'The Parade', in which all the artists make their entrance in the ring once again to gratefully acknowledge the audience's overwhelming applause.

    Hellfire - Ben Hollings

Hellfire was written for the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band’s programme of music at the 40th Brass in Concert Championships at the Sage, Gateshead; a programme which told the story of the Great Fire of London 350 years ago. Hellfire depicts part of the story where the fire broke out on Pudding Lane and spread throughout London, causing havoc and leading people to flee from the city for their safety. The piece opens with night falling upon the city on the evening of September 2nd, 1666. Swirling sounds and distant rumblings are heard throughout the band as easterly winds blow strongly through the city. Suddenly a single spark is blown out of the baker’s oven and ignites the great fire. The fire quickly spreads, alarm bells are raised, and panic ensues as people scream and run for their lives from the menacing fire. The strong wind carries the dancing fire across rooftops from house to house and the sound of collapsing structures thunders with the roaring flames. People look in awe and horror at the mighty fire surrounding them, whilst they stand in the ‘eye of the storm’. Gunpowder-fuelled explosions boom and the escape from the city continues. People piling their precious belongings onto boats and sailing down the River Thames to escape. A feeling of hope is cast upon London as the fire finally begins to subside, and 4 days later… darkness finally falls upon the city once more.

Lucid Perspectives - Andrew Baker, Lucy Pankhurst, Paul McGhee

Lucid Perspectives was commissioned by the Woodbridge Excelsior Brass Band for use as their own choice test piece at the 2017 Butlins Mineworkers 4th Section Championships in Skegness. Having been asked on a few occasions to write a piece for 4th section, I decided it was the perfect time to maybe write a collaborative piece that uses different compositional voices working to a common goal. With a brief of ‘write a short two minute piece that incorporates the view from the window where you composed it’, the composers set about making a new and interesting work for brass band where the main objective was to produce a short piece of music that never ‘talks down’ to the performer and engages them in a tonal language that perhaps isn’t instantly familiar. Written in four ‘movements’ which run continuously, Lucid Perspectives aims to bring together three unique voices in a work that reflects their styles, surroundings and inspirations.

Swing the Mountain King - Edvard Grieg

'In the Hall of the Mountain King' was composed by Grieg as part of the incidental music for Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt. A fantasy story written in verse, Peer Gynt tells of the adventures of the eponymous boy.The sequence in which In the Hall of the Mountain King is used is when Peer sneaks into the Troll Mountain King's castle. The piece is played when Peer attempts to escape from the King. When the trolls spot Peer, they give chase and the music begins to speed up. Peer begins to run, and the music begins to get increasingly louder and faster. Finally, at the end, the King catches Peer Gynt, picks him up and hurls him out the back door of the castle. The piece abruptly finishes on this note. This inventive arrangement from the pen of Simon Kerwin gives Grieg's original masterpiece a full big band treatment!

The Dark Side of the Moon - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

This piece was commissioned by Dr. Nicholas Childs and Black Dyke Band on behalf of Rotary International and received its world premi?re performance at St. David's Hall, Cardiff on Saturday 27th January 2007. It is dedicated to the composer's father, Harry Cooper. The music was selected by the National Contesting Council as the 3rd section test piece for the 2008 Regional Brass Band Championships of Great Britain. A Note from the Composer...Have you ever thought of a holiday destination, tourist attraction, event, place, site or period in history and thought 'I wonder what it would be like?' - somwhere you have never been and can only let your imagination run wild on. What would the place be like, and all the things surrounding it such as the mood, feelings you get experiencing it, the temperature? Who would be there and what you would see? This piece is my musical imagination of the dark side of the moon. I know from news reports, the internet and other footage that the moon is a very desolate place, very barren and rugged. So from the start the piece gives the listener a musical picture of the rugged landscape with little light and warmth. However, the one place that has had me thinking about is the side of the moon that we don't see in our night skies, the side of the moon with no sun and no light pollution from civilisation. I can only imagine the eeriness one would feel being stood in complete darkness on the moon's surface looking around. As you slowly explore the surroundings and your eyes drift up to the night sky, there is an awesome sight unfolding in front of you - countless stars and galaxies, planets and different solar systems and all right in front of you glistening from the light of the sun beaming from the other side of the moon. The Dark Side of the Moon portrays a musical picture of the whole experience as seen in my imagination taking the listener from the rugged landscape to the awesome beauty that sits endlessly in front of you.Paul Lovatt-Cooper, September 2007

TO REGIONS FAIR (Brass Band Set) - Norman Bearcroft

Clive Bright, in his score note when To Regions Fair was originally published in 1958, predicted that the march would 'have a good run'. In retrospect, this turned out to be something of an understatement as this march (and many other Bearcroft marches) remains vibrantly active fifty years after its original publication. The title is derived from the song 'Meet in bliss' which is featured in the trio section.

Procession to the Minister - Wagner, R.

'Procession' was premi?red at the Royal Albert Hall Gala Concert in October 1987, to immediate success. It fits together music from two separate parts of Act 2 of Lohengrin into a single stretch. That it has become the most used finale in modern brass band history, is beyond any doubt, with only the March from the Pines of Rome mounting any real challenge.... although perhaps latterly 'Entry of the Gods into Valhalla' shows every sign of making a run on the post.Brass Band World's TOP CHOICE as a Finale, most played, most enjoyed by audiences and players alike. Again Grades 2 and 3 because it is hard... but everyone wants to play it!

Escape Velocity (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Cordner, Martin

Escape Velocity is the scientific term for the speed at which a body overcomes the gravitational pull of another body. Thematically, the music seeks to capture the busyness and 'gravitational pull' of the fallen world and the struggle of the believer to overcome and escape into the restful presence of God. Eventually, the believer breaks free from the world, the work culminating in a presentation of the popular Hillsong anthem, 'I will run to you'.
