Esprit is a rhapsodic adventure for brass band and percussion.During its twelve minutes, features all soloists and sections of the band. After a vibrant opening the main melodic work is in the lower band accompanied by swirling cornets.The next section is a scherzo like section opened by the horns and closed by the timpani, and in between there are solo's for all.The following adagio is an expressive solo for euphonium accompanied by cup muted cornets and trombones, followed by a section for the flugel which builds up to the full band. A cornet cadenza follows after which a timpani solo takes us to a con brio section in 6/8 which features a round and fugato section which is followed by a slower section for trombones which in turn leads to a musical climax.A short allegro motto section develops an idea from earlier in the piece and leads us into a reprise of the opening section. A vibrant coda concludes the work.Duration: 12:00 Grade: Moderately Difficult

Apex - Peter Meechan
Apex was commissioned by Mark Bousie and David Armitage (President of Sellers International Ltd.) for the Sellers International Youth Band to perform at the Action Research Entertainment Contest in Blackpool, 2007. Originally commissioned as part of a stage act with a magician, who levitated the soloist, Apex takes its title from the literal meaning of the word - the highest point.As well as being a solo for cornet, the piece also strongly features the percussion section, as well as the band singing!The solo part is equally suitable for cornet, flugel horn or trumpet.First performance:Sellers International Youth BandMark Bousie - ConductorJoe Murray - CornetPerformance notes:* The singing parts are written in transposed pitch, and should be sung to an aaha sound* The percussionists should feel free to add instruments (Such as bongos) and treat section C to the end as a guide, which they can change and build on* From section C until the end, percussion parts 1 and 2 may be played by one percussionist on a drum set

Written for and premiered by the Leyland Band with euphonium soloist Philippe Schwartz in 2010, Midnight is a haunting euphonium solo which features the engaging combination of lyrical melodies and strident energy.The piece opens with peaceful serenity and then moves towards an energetic and exciting passage which really showcases the soloist and the band alike. Lots of percussion highlights are included in the scoring which adds immense depth to the writing. Following is a return to an atmospheric spotlight on the soloist, developing into an impressive cadenza and eventually closing with the original tranquility.Comments by the composer, Lucy Pankhurst, on writing collaboratively for a band:"I didn't intend to tailor [this piece] specifically, other than knowing I could pretty much write whatever I wanted to for the band and soloist.They are such great players and have a cracking percussion section. The only stipulation I was given was for something 'atmospheric'.This is actually one piece that I started at the first bar and composed chronologically. Everything grew from the opening marimba ostinato."Midnight is featured on the Leyland Band CD - Age of Chivalry.

The piece features soloistic input from all sections, with vibrant percussion colours adding to the overall effectiveness. Although the piece sounds extremely virtuosic it is accessible for most bands, and is fun to rehearse as well as exciting to listen to. My soul, rejoice (Andrew Wainwright) was commissioned in 2022 by Elizabeth Malovance, principal cornet of the Chicago Staff Band. A spirited and celebratory work, it is designed to showcase the dual nature of the cornet: its sparkling technical agility and its rich, vocal lyricism. The music begins in meditative fashion before transitioning into a joyful caprice featuring playful syncopations which are handed around the band. This is followed by a reflective section based on the much-loved worship song I love you Lord by Laurie Klein. The work concludes with a reprise of the original theme, building in momentum and intensity. Through a series of brilliant runs and virtuosic flourishes, the soloist leads the charge toward a majestic and triumphant finale, bringing the work to a ringing, glorious close. The solo was recorded by Richard Marshall on the 2026 CD Gothique Fantasy - The Music of Andrew Wainwright, which was his last solo recording of his 20-year tenure as principal cornet of Black Dyke Band. Technical Requirements & Electroacoustic Integration This work features an optional digital delay effect for the soloist, indicated in the score by "pedal on" and "pedal off" markings. If the required equipment is unavailable, the piece can be performed entirely acoustically. My Tribute (To God Be The Glory) is a gospel song written by American gospel singer and songwriter Andrae Edward Crouch. He first recorded the song in 1972 on his album Keep on Singin'. This powerful and evocative work by Australian-New Zealand composer Fendall Hill pays tribute to the ANZAC soldiers who passed through Weymouth, Dorset during World War I. Inspired by first-hand accounts, the piece follows the emotional journey of a young soldier - from eager enlistment, through the harrowing Gallipoli campaign, to recovery and reflection in Weymouth. Structured in four movements, the music captures anticipation, fear, fierce resistance, and eventual healing, culminating in a moment of remembrance. The hymn tune Wareham -written by Dorset composer William Knapp - features prominently as a thematic thread, honouring the region's historical connection to the ANZAC legacy. A deeply moving addition to the brass band repertoire, this work is both a musical narrative and a heartfelt gesture of gratitude to the people of Dorset for their care and ongoing commemoration of the ANZACs.
