The name John Philip Sousa is no stranger to any brass band aficionado. Our Flirtations has its origins in incidental music written by Sousa for a play of the same name. It was written around 1880, about the time he was appointed Director of the U.S. Marine Band, a position he held until he formed his own civilian band in 1892. Sousa wrote over 130 marches, many of which have been transcribed for brass band.

Stai si, defenda romontsch, tiu vegl lungatg (Stand up, defend your old Romansh language): This composition was named after a quotation from a poem by famous Romansh poet Giachen Casper Muoth. The arrangement deals with various well known songs for male choir such as A Trun sut igl ischi (In Trun under the malpe tree), Si sededesta Rezia (Wake up, land of Raetia), Il pur suveran (The independent farmer) or Il paun palus (The rosted bread). An atmospheric beginning over a pedal point uses quotations from these songs and leads eventually into a dark but warmly orchestrated section on Nossa viarva (Our language) by H. Erni. The piece ends, once more quoting A Trun sut igl ischi by J. Heim, a dedication to struggle for freedom and independence.

£33.35Adoration (Cornet Solo with Brass Band) Florence Price trs. Andrew Wainwright
Florence Price was an American classical composer, pianist, organist and music teacher. She is noted as the first African-American woman to be recognised as a symphonic composer, and the first to have a composition played by a major orchestra. Price composed over 300 works: four symphonies, four concertos, as well as choral works, art songs, chamber music and music for solo instruments. In 2009, a substantial collection of her works and papers that had been previously considered lost was found in her abandoned summer home. Amongst these was this delightful work, Adoration, which had been composed in the 1950s for organ. According to IMSLP.org, the piece "failed to meet notice or renewal requirements to secure statutory copyright with no 'restoration' under the GATT amendments" and therefore is in the public domain. A version for violin and piano by Elaine Fine has become popular. This setting for cornet soloist with brass band has been arranged by Andrew Wainwright. Fading Signals, by Lucy Green, was the winner of the 2025 UniBrass Composition Competition. The work is a contemplative exploration of the subtle nuances of communication, memory, and the passing of time. It reflects on the experience of crossing paths with others and forming connections that may gradually grow distant over time. Blake's 7 was a British science fiction television series produced by the BBC and broadcast between 1978 and 1981. It was popular from its first broadcast, watched by approximately 10 million people in the UK and shown in 25 other countries. Although many aspects of space opera were present, its budget was inadequate for its interstellar narrative. It still remains well regarded for its strong characterisation, ambiguous morality and pessimistic tone - but has also been described as "classically awful". It has cult status. After over 30 years of silence, the theme music has now been arranged for full Brass Band and is a strident 'opener', or 'closer' for any concert.
