Symphony for Double Brass on a theme of Purcell 1995 marked the tercentenary of Purcell's death, and my new score Revelation has been written as a tribute to his music and the ornate and confident spirit of his age. There are five major sections: 1 Prologue 2 Variations on a ground bass I 3 Fugue 4 Variations on a ground bass II 5 Epilogue and Resurrection The score uses many features of the Baroque Concerto Grosso, and arranges players in two equal groups from which soloists emerge to play in a variety ofvirtuoso ensembles. It quotes freely from Purcell's own piece Three Parts on a Ground in which he has composed a brilliant sequence of variations over a repeating six-note bass figure. This original motif can be heard most clearly beneath the duet for Cornet 5 and Soprano at the beginning of the 2nd section. There is, of course, a religious dimension to Revelation as the title suggests, and the score is prefaced by lines by the 17th century poet John Donne. His Holy Sonnet paraphrases the Book of Revelation in which the dead are raised at the sounds of the last trumpet. Donne's trumpets are themselves placed stereophonically ". . . At the round Earth's imagined corners" and it is this feature that today's players represent as they move around the performing area. Their final apocalyptic fanfares can be heard at the close of the score, as Purcell's music re-enters in a lasting tribute to England's first composer of genius. Escape Velocity (Brass Band - Score only) - Cordner, Martin
Escape Velocity is the scientific term for the speed at which a body overcomes the gravitational pull of another body. Thematically, the music seeks to capture the busyness and 'gravitational pull' of the fallen world and the struggle of the believer to overcome and escape into the restful presence of God. Eventually, the believer breaks free from the world, the work culminating in a presentation of the popular Hillsong anthem, 'I will run to you'.

Exultate Deo (Brass Band - Score only) - Sharman, Paul
Translated as 'Praise the Lord', 'Exultate Deo' was conceived as an overture of praise to God. It brings together three contrasting songs of praise; 'Praise Him!', 'We are here to praise you' and 'Then will the very rocks cry out'. The bold opening uses the tune 'Gerontius' to which the words, 'Praise to the holiest in the height' are associated while the music concludes with the phrase 'Praise my soul, the King of Heaven'.

Purpose (Brass Band - Score only) - Sharman, Paul
Written for The Salvation Army United Kingdom Territorial Youth Band course 2009, the songs included all speak about having a purpose in our lives; 'Dare to be a Daniel' ('Standing by a purpose true'), 'Without you, I'll be nothing' and 'King of kings, Majesty' ('I live to serve your majesty').

Spirit Of Joy (Brass Band - Score only) - Rive, Herbert
Herbert Rive contributed just two compositions to Salvation Army music, the other being the festival march The King's Command. Spirit of Joy was awarded first prize in the 1953 70th Anniversary March Competition in New Zealand. Rive uses a short syncopated motif based on the first few notes of the Salvation Army tune If you keep singing to tie all aspects of this march together.

Christmas Joy (Brass Band - Score only) - Leidzen, Erik
A 'classic' Christmas march, played by bands the world over. If your band doesn't play it, you should be asking why not! A cleverly worked 'romp' through the Christmas tunes 'Hark the glad sound', 'Jingle Bells' and 'Wassail song'. Very accessible and great fun to play in a group of any size.

He Can Break Every Fetter (Brass Band - Score only) - Downie, Kenneth
This is a setting of a chorus that the composer remembers being sung in Scotland as a child. The words encapsulate the truth of the Christian gospel in one sentence; 'He can break every fetter, He can set you free!'. Starting with trombone quartet, two more statements of the chorus follow, each in a new key. The final, extended, cadence emphasizes the spiritual release declared in the text.

Motivation (Brass Band - Score only) - Himes, William
The title of this extended march is derived from the song 'Would you know why I love Jesus, Why he is so dear to me? 'Tis because my blessed and Saviour From my sins has ransomed me' which is featured throughout this rythmic and original composition.

The Fatheras Blessing (Brass Band - Score only) - Downie, Kenneth
This music is a treatment of the tune that William Tomer wrote for the words 'God be with you till we meet again'. In recent years, Ralph Vaughan Williams' tune 'Randolph' has often been the preferred choice to accompany these words although this composer was drawn to the original tune. Serenity is the prevailing mood of the piece although there is chance for the band to 'open up' in the link passages.
