£44.95The Trumpets of the Angels (Brass Band - Score only) - Gregson, Edward
The Trumpets of the Angels was commissioned by the Fodens (Courtois) Band for their centenary concert at The Bridgewater Hall in 2000. It is based on a work written for the BBC Philharmonic and Huddersfield Choral Society in 1998, the starting point of which was a quotation from the Book of Revelation:and I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpetsThus the idea behind the work is dramatic and I have tried to achieve this by the spatial deployment of seven solo trumpets around the band, four on-stage, the others off-stage. Six of the solo trumpets eventually join the band, but Trumpet 7 remains off-stage and, indeed, has the most dramatic and extended cadenza representing the words of the seventh angel ...and time shall be no more.The Trumpets of the Angels is a large-scale work, scored for seven solo trumpets, brass band, organ and percussion (deploying 'dark' instruments such as tam-tams, bass drum and two sets of timpani). The work opens with a four-note motif announced by off-stage horns and baritones and answered by fanfare figures on solo trumpets. In turn, each of the first four solo trumpets play cadenzas and then all four join together, independently playing their own music. The organ enters dramatically with its own cadenza, leading to the entry of solo trumpets 5 and 6 with music that is more urgent and rhythmic, describing the horsemen of the Apocalypse.The music reaches another climax, more intense this time, with the horns and baritones (now on-stage) again sounding the transformed motif, before subsiding into what might be described as a lament for humanity, slow music which builds from low to high, from soft to loud, with a melody that is both simple and poignant. At the climax, Trumpet 7 enters playing the opening four-note motif, dramatically extended to almost three octaves. This cadenza (to the partial accompaniment of tam-tams) introduces new material and foreshadows the ensuing scherzo which is fast and aggressive. Despite the somewhat desolate mood of this music, it slowly moves towards an optimistic conclusion, transforming the 'humanity' music into an affirmative and triumphant statement.- Edward Gregson

Between the Two Rivers was commissioned by Fanfare Prins Hendrik, from Aalst in the Netherlands. The title derives from the fact that the town of Aalst lies between two tributaries of the River Dommel. The community is a highly religious one, so the famous Luther chorale, Ein' Feste Burg, was an obvious choice for Philip Sparke to use as the theme for this new work. It takes the form of a theme with four contrasting variations. Variation 1 is a moto perpetuo, variation 2 has a slower march like feel, variation 3 is a sinister slow movement and the final variation is in the form of a lyrical fugue. Between The Two Rivers is sure to become a major work in modern brass band repertoire.Duration: 15:00

Peter Warlock's set of set of six dances in renaissance style, Capriol Suite, is by far his most famous work. The suite consists of Basse-Danse, a lively dance for older folk; a stately Pavane; a delicate, yet lively Tordion; Bransles (pronounced 'Brawl'), a fast country dance which works its way into a frenzy, continuously building in speed and excitement; Pieds-en-l'air, with its beautifully serene lines and Mattachins, an exhilarating sword dance with its driving rhythm, culminating in violent dissonances bringing the piece to a spirited close. This is a new arrangement suitable for any band, including those in the 4th Section that relish a challenge. Percussion has been added in all but one of the movements, and is for two players. Championship Section Test Piece for the 2016 National Finals of the British Brass Band Championship.The Lone Wolf of the title is the great Hungarian composer and folklorist Bla Bartok. Bartok's journey took him from the hills of the Balkans to the heart of the new world. His singular vision may have meant a life out in the cold, a life without warmth and love, a life without true happiness, a death mourned by a few in a strange land.The first of the three linked movements is capturing the Peasants' Song and follows the young Bartok and fellow composer Zoltan Kolday as they embark on Summertime adventures through the Hungarian countryside to collect and catalogue the astonishing variety of Gypsy and folk music heard in the Balkan hills. The arrival of WW1 plunges Bartok's beloved Hungary into chaos.Bartok was at times a cold man, aloof and lonely. The occasional moments of tenderness he showed are portrayed in Night Music. His brief but intense affairs speak of a love he could only long for. Jazz is my night music and here there are hints of what Bartok may have heard in the USA later in his life.Having been forced by the world's evils to leave his homeland of Hungary for America Bartok, the anti-fascist, felt isolated and angry. In the finale, Flight and Fight, we hear his longing for a simpler time of Gypsy folk dances as well as his maturity and depth as a composer finally exploring deeper colours and darker themes.Duration: 15.00

The first performance was given by the Cornish Youth Brass Band, conducted by Ian Porthouse, at St. Michael's Church, Newquay, on 30th December 2008.Penlee has been voted into the Classic FM Hall of Fame 2011 at No.106. £33.15Polka from 'The Bartered Bride' (Brass Band) Smetana arr. Rob Bushnell
Considered a major contribution to the develop of Czech music, The Bartered Bride by Bedrich Smetana is a comic opera in three acts that premiered, in its final version, in 1870; having not been a great success when the original two-act version premiered at the Provisional Theatre, Prague on 30 May 1866. The opera was part of Smetana's aim to create a native Czech music after the conductor Johann von Herbeck commented that Czechs were incapable of making music of their own. Whilst he avoided the direct use of folksongs, Smetana did use numerous traditional Bohemian dance forms, such as the furiant and the polka, leading to music that was Czech in spirit. 'Sold Bride', a more accurate translation of the original Czech title (Prodana nevesta), tells the story of two lovers (Marenka and Jenik) who want to marry despite Marenka's father's obligations for his daughter to marry the son of a wealthy landowner, Micha. Scheming, condition proposals and secret identities leads to a happy ending. The polka was not in the original 1866 version. A revision in October 1866 saw the addition of a gypsy dance near the start of act 2. But by the next performance in January 1869, this had been replaced by a polka. In June 1869, a new polka replaced the January version's (as well as being moved to the end of act 1) and this is the one that we know and love today. This arrangement is for British-style brass band, with *alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. £33.15The Piano Preludes (Brass Band) George Gershwin arr. Rob Bushnell
First performed by the composer at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York in 1926, The Piano Preludes (or Three Preludes) are a collection of short pieces by George Gershwin, show casing early-20th-century American classical music, as influenced by jazz. Gershwin originally planned to compose 24 preludes, wrote seven, performed only six publically and was further reduced to three when first published. The work was dedicated to friend and musical advisor Bill Daly. The first prelude begins with a five-note blues motif. It features syncopated rhythms based on the Brazilian baiao and minor-seventh chords throughout. The second prelude, which Gershwin said was "a sort of blues lullaby" consists of two sections: the first a "lazy" melody upon a steady beat of crotchets; the second the bass takes the melody, continuing with the steady beats. The third prelude was called "Spanish" by Gershwin, and features a question-and-answer type melody, starting in a minor tonality and ending in major one. This arrangement is for the British-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. £43.00Fugatango (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Waterman, Steve
Composer and Internationally reknown jazz trumpeter Steve Waterman writes... "When Roger Argente approached me to write a composition for his Spanish flavoured brass project he made the suggestion that a Tango, although more Argentinian than Spanish, would fit in well with the overall concept. I have always been a very big fan of the music of Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla and particularly the way that the Tango could be combined with jazz. A favourite recording of mine is of Piazzolla himself performing (on the bandoneon) with the jazz saxophonist Gerry Mulligan. As the composing progressed, a fugato also emerged hence the title Fugatango." Originally "Fugatango" featured a french horn improvised introduction section. This new brass band version allows the flugelhorn to enjoy the moment with a wonderful 8 bar solo section, now notated. Later in the work the solo trombone is given a solo section. Duration: 5.30. Suitable for 3rd Section Bands and above.
