Cesar Franck was appointed as organist at the newly built Paris church of Saint Clotilde in 1858, though he wrote remarkably little music for the instrument. Piece Heroique was one of the Trois Pieces pour Grand Orgue written in 1878 for the inauguration of the new Cavaille-Coll organ at the Trocadero in Paris. It's stately grandeur and stirring finale make an ideal concert item, and this skillful arrangement (which includes an optional organ part for added colour) retains the character of the original, while transferring it to the sonority of the brass band. At The Going Down Of The Sun is a deeply moving musical tribute dedicated to the courage, resilience, and ultimate sacrifice of those who have defended the nation of Australia. Inspired by the heroic legacy of the 2/25th Battalion and their storied defense of the Kokoda Track during World War II, this composition serves as a solemn reminder of the immense gratitude owed to its fallen heroes. This piece is born from a legacy of service. It was composed in honor of Keith Fitzpatrick, who enlisted in the AIF on November 28, 1941. Keith served two tours in New Guinea, spending 359 days on the treacherous Kokoda Track. Keith Fitzpatrick lived to celebrate his 100th birthday in 2023, leaving behind a profound legacy through his wife of 67 years, Valda, and three generations of descendants. At The Going Down Of The Sun captures this spirit of endurance and devotion. £33.33Je te veux (Brass Band) Satie arr. Rob Bushnell
Je te veux, or I Want You, is a valse chantee (sung waltz) by the French composer Erik Satie, with lyrics by Henry Pacory. It was written for Paulette Darty, who first sang it in 1903 at La Scala, Paris, with Satie accompanying. There are various versions that Satie produced, the original for piano and voice, a version for brass 'orchestra', for full orchestra (where a trio section was added), and a version for solo piano (but including the new trio section). This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass, and is of the longer version (with the trio section). As a result, it lends itself to being performed in a various of ways, with the ensemble has the option of selecting the part of it compound ternary form to play: (A-B-A)(C-D-C)(A-B-A). £33.33Finale - Suite No.3 (Brass Band) Tchaikovsky arr. Ruben Schmidt
This arrangement by Ruben Schmidt is the exciting polonaise finale from the last movement of Tchaikovsky's thrilling Suite No.3 in G Major for Orchestra. This was first performed in Saint Petersburg on January 12th, 1885, at the fifth symphony concert of the Russian Musical Society, conducted by Hans von Bulow. The suite also was Tchaikovsky's first American success when it was performed by the New York Symphony Society at Carnegie Hall on May 7,1891. First intended as its own symphony, it became the most played and most successful of Tchaikovsky's four suites. The finale of the last movement is an invigorating polonaise dance to finish the suite. Tchaikovsky often enjoyed conducting this final movement as an independent work himself. This atmospheric work by English composer Joe Galuszka is set in three movements: I. Fear II. Hope III. Solidarity (March for Truth) The composer writes: 'All around us is mistrust in the information we receive. Chinese misinformation. Russian disinformation. 'Fake News' in the United States. At every turn we doubt what we hear, what we see. Disinformation was composed in response to the ever-growing and all powerful misinformation campaigns worldwide that reached dizzying levels of influence, coming from some of the most eminent heads of states, during the turn of the 21st century. With division and disillusionment now rife and engrained in Western democracies, the unravelling of the social order is reflected in this short work for brass band. Opening with Fear, Disinformation starts with vast amounts of noise taking over the establishment and paints a world with people coming to terms with the cacophony of sound that is 'false information'. With a retreat to a brief moment of solace, Hope conjures up a calm escapism where on the outside, the brave and the wise look on to what is becoming of our new world. Maybe there is chance to pull together? Ending with a frenzied, brazen climax, the piece concludes with Solidarity - where people and the politicians come to loggerheads in a battle - where those who seek division are called out and the lies are laid bare for all to see, as we enter, once more, the unknown.' £59.25Sleigh Ride Suite (Brass Band) Leopold Mozart arr. Alex McGee
Today Leopold Mozart (1719-1787) is known almost exclusively as the stern father of Wolfgang, but he was a prominent and successful musician in his own time. The Sleigh Ride, composed just before Wolfgang was born, certainly shows that Mozart the elder had as good a sense of humour as his more famous son. Wolfgang must, in fact, have known and enjoyed his father's piece - he included a short Sleigh Ride in his German Dances, K.605, in 1791. Leopold's more complicated piece is a programmatic serenade, with short titles for each section: a musical picture of a cold evening's ride to a party. The score calls for sleigh bells, rattle, a whip, and triangle. The action begins with a short overture (Intrada), followed by the Sleigh Ride itself, a lively duple-meter dance accompanied by jangling sleigh bells and punctuated by the cracking of a whip. There is then a nice bit of musical pantomime - The Young Lady Shivers With Cold. The sleigh finally arrives at the party, a ball with a small dance orchestra. The Ball Begins, not surprisingly, with a courtly menuet, and the End of the Ball is a spirited Kehraus, a lively rondo-form dance. This transcription faithfully seeks to convey the light touch of the Age of Enlightenment to the modern brass band and provides ensembles with new material for their annual Christmas concerts. This engaging major Christmas work features three carols or songs associated with the place of Christ's birth: Once In Royal David's City, O Little Town of Bethlehem (Forest Green) and How Far Is It To Bethlehem? During Old Testament times, the city of Jerusalem had been considered the 'City of David', as the political and spiritual capital of Israel. However, after Christ's birth, that name was given to the town of Bethlehem - a quiet farming village in the countryside. This new designation is first mentioned in the Gospel of Luke: ''For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.' (Luke 2:11) A variety of moods are used to express:- The crowds of people arriving in Bethlehem to be taxed, overtaking the town, leaving no room for a young, pregnant Mary and her husband.- The stillness of the countryside on the eve of Christ's birth.- The excitement of worshippers celebrating the birth of a Saviour.
