Performance Notes from Andrew Duncan:This arrangement is fairly difficult for inexperienced players and is without doubt one of the most difficult in the Flexi-Collection Popular Classics Series. But, as it is such a popular piece there is normally a great incentive from the players to learn the piece, despite the difficulties.The accelerando and gradual increases in tempo which are integral to this piece are in themselves very important musical ideas for new players to grasp, and these will be better understood as a result of playing and learning this arrangement.Other features found in this arrangement which may be new to some inexperienced players are the use of tin mutes in the 1st Cornet/Trumpet part, and the falling chromatic notes (accidentals) found in the melody line. Also, the wide range of dynamics, pp - ff , may be new to some players.I have deliberately not suggested any specific metronome markings as this is very much up to the conductor and is dependant on the players' abilities. In particular, the joy experienced on reaping their first harvest, so the American folk tune, Bringing in the Sheaves in featured throughout the piece. Reflections of Freedom was Written for the US Army Brass Band in Washington DC and premiered by them in 1997. Reflections of Freedom was the title track on the Whitburn Band CD of the same name, recorded in 2004. Suitable as a test piece for 1st section brass bands. Includes score & parts

£79.95Corineus - Christopher Bond
Corineus, in medieval British legend, was a prodigious warrior, a fighter of giants, and the eponymous founder of Cornwall. The first of the legendary rulers of Cornwall, he is described as a character of strength and power. It is on the medieval ruler that this new work, Corineus, is based, presented in three contrasting sections. The work opens with heraldic fanfares and a sense of jubilance before presenting musical material which changes and develops organically, portraying the journey taken by Corineus, Brutus, and the Trojans from modern-day mainland Europe to Britain. The central section of the work is slower, creating a feeling of longing. Brutus' son, Locrinus, had agreed to marry Corineus' daughter, Gwendolen, but instead fell in love with a German princess. In writing this part of the work, the composer portrays the longing of Gwendolen for her husband, knowing he is in love with somebody else. After Corineus died, Locrinus divorced Gwendolen, who responded by raising an army in Cornwall and making war against her ex-husband. Locrinus was killed in battle, and legend suggests that Gwendolen threw Locrinus' lover into the River Severn. This dramatic battle provides the inspiration for the final part of the work. In writing this work, the composer hopes to flare the imagination of young brass players around the country, in an engaging new take on a firm fixture in British folklore.

DURATION: 5'30". DIFFICULTY: 1st+. 'Nightfall in Harlem' is a Flugel Horn solo in two short sections, each depicting a scene in the New York ditrict of Harlem, situated at the north end of Central Park. There is a heavy influence of jazz and blues throughout this solo with the opening 'Central park by night'; a moody and sleazy depiction of the bright lights of the New York skyline which engulf Central Park followed by the virtuosic 'Buskers', paying homage to the many jazz musicians who line the pavings of the park throughout the year.

Scotch Missed - Len Jenkins - Len Jenkins
Back in the late 1980's a crowd of us went to Scotland to see in the New Year. We were dismayed to find that the pubs were shut early on New Year's Eve, and the only drink and merriment would be in an hotel (if resident or invited), or by 'first footing'. This involved taking a bottle of Scotch and presenting oneself at the door of a complete stranger, whereupon we were relieved of the bottle and welcomed into the general hubbub. The bottle was passed around those gathered there, so that by the time it got back to us it was empty. Just like its homonym, when it got around to us, it simply did not exist.

£40.61Allegro Spirito from Symphony No.2 (Brass Band) Borodin arr. Harold Burgmayer
Alexander Borodin's Second Symphony in B minor dates from the years 1869-76, a time when he was also working on his enduring opera Prince Igor. Flavors of the exotic and outdoor celebration seemed to have spilled over from the opera in this brilliant sonata movement. Borodin seldom quotes Russian folk tunes, but his graceful melodic lines are permeated with the spirit of his native song, supported by iridescent harmonies and bright colors. This arrangement for brass band was premiered by The Salvation Army's New York Staff Band, with Ronald Waiksnoris conducting, at Alice Tully Hall in New York City on 11 April 2001. This complete transcription of the Finale movement of Borodin's Second Symphony has an approximate duration of 6.40 minutes. To alternatively utilize the piece as an opener, a cut from bar 173 to 272 is indicated with Coda signs, reducing the piece to 4.30 seconds.
