Since most of the bands competing in the 4th Section of the Dutch National Championships have many young players, this piece is stylistically youthful-- especially in the opening and closing sections. An arpeggio pattern appears numerous times in all registers and is the basic musical element of the main melody, alternating with a second theme that has a slightly different melodic character. The middle section is conceived like a chorale, introduced and developed stepwise: firstly with short patterns and gradually in increasingly long snippets, until it's played in its glorious entirety at measure 216. No real solo passages are included but rather small chambercombinations, thus offering the opportunity to various players to display their technical and performance skills. The finale recaptures musical material from the first section of the piece and provides a majestic conclusion.

£168.50Music of the Spheres (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
Music of the Spheres was commissioned by the Yorkshire Building Society Band and first performed by them at the European Brass Band Championships in Glasgow, May 2004. The piece reflects the composers fascination with the origins of the universe and deep space in general. The title comes from a theory, formulated by Pythagoras, that the cosmos was ruled by the same laws he had discovered that govern the ratios of note frequencies of the musical scale. ('Harmonia' in Ancient Greek, which means scale or tuning rather than harmony - Greek music was monophonic). He also believed that these ratios corresponded to the distances of the six known planets from the sun and thatthe planets each produced a musical note which combined to weave a continuous heavenly melody (which, unfortunately, we humans cannot hear). In this work, these six notes form the basis of the sections Music of the Spheres and Harmonia. The pieces opens with a horn solo called t = 0, a name given by some scientists to the moment of the Big Bang when time and space were created, and this is followed by a depiction of the Big Bang itself, as the entire universe bursts out from a single point. A slower section follows called The Lonely Planet which is a meditation on the incredible and unlikely set of circumstances which led to the creation of the Earth as a planet that can support life, and the constant search for other civilisations elsewhere in the universe. Asteroids and Shooting Stars depicts both the benign and dangerous objects that are flying through space and which constantly threaten our planet, and the piece ends with The Unknown, leaving in question whether our continually expanding exploration of the universe will eventually lead to enlightenment or destruction.Duration: 18:00

Building musical paragraphs using short, irregular rhythmical patterns became a favourite Gregson formula in the early 1970s. Patterns is the clearest and most disciplined example. By limiting himself to a single musical motif, heard at the outset on trombones, Gregson offers a true test of technique and musicianship in a concise three part structure. The opening is another Gregson prelude with alternating patterns of 3s, 4s, 5s and 7s that are bonded by a constant quaver pulse. The music here possesses a neo-classical, pristine quality. In the central episode, the same triadic figure is transformed into a lilting barcarolle-like dialogue beginning on solo cornet and horn. When the whole band becomes involved, the trombones add a moment of bi-tonal ambiguity, which sets in motion an exuberant Latin dance and final flourish.Patterns was commissioned by the Butlins Youth Brass Band Championships for the 1974 competition at the Royal Albert Hall.Duration: 5.00

Island Whirl was commissioned by Margaret Milligan who wanted a brand new piece of music composed as a present for Ian, her husband for his 70th birthday. Ian Milligan is a keen and dedicated musician and he is the musical director of Callendar Brass, based in Callendar near Stirling in Scotland.Margaret contacted me about the possibility of composing a short lively piece which had a Scottish theme that would be ideal for Callendar Brass Band and any other ensemble to get their teeth into. This piece takes its inspiration from the traditional Scottish folk song 'An Eriskay Love Lilt' which is a particular favourite of both Margaret and Ian.With thunderous Celtic drums the piece opens in a whirlwind of sound with fanfare brass and an off-stage soloist that can perform using either the cornet or trumpet. After the exciting opening, the brass and drums die away to allow the off-stage soloist to air the traditional tune 'An Eriskay Love Lilt'.The beautiful haunting melody, keeping its originality throughout undergoes a series of changes in the accompanying harmonic material before dying away to allow the Celtic drums to return. The percussion whip the band into a frenzy as the piece gets faster and faster. Just prior to the final notes the band diminuendo to allow one last closing statement from the Eriskay Love Lilt lead by the off-stage soloist before the ensemble charge to a dramatic close.When performing this piece I would recommend the off-stage soloist taking a position somewhere in the audience, so they can almost feel part of the performance. In addition, with the two tom-tom parts that represent the Celtic drums, bands should make the most of showcasing them by getting the two drummers out to the front of the band to perform. The ideal stage position would be with the players set up in stereo with one player in front of the soprano cornet and the other in front of the solo trombone.With the various choreographed movements from both the off-stage soloist and the percussionists. This piece is a great addition to any concert repertoire and is an ideal showcase for bands who want to try something a little different.I wish Ian at 70 years young, all the very best with his music making in the many years to come and I hope this piece, composed especially for him and Callender Brass brings them many years of musical enjoyment.Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Trombone Solo.In 1953, a new musical by Johnny Burke and Jimmy Van Heusen was staged, "Carnival in Flanders". Unfortunately, it was not successful. However, one of the songs, "Here's that Rainy Day" became a standard on the cabaret scene.I have arranged this memorable song for solo trombone and brass band. It begins in a Latin style, then moves to the famous Jazz Big Band style. Good key players make the band parts playable by most bands - as long as they like to 'swing'! The trombone part is not easy, on the other hand, neither is it aimed at the 'select few' virtuoso players. Impressive stuff though, with 'written' sections that sound like improvisation.

Hope is a deeply reflective and uplifting work for brass band, shaped by themes of serenity, renewal, and spiritual hope. Composer Nathanael Watchorn revisits a melody and harmonic framework originally conceived for an unrealised project - material that, even at its inception, carried the gentle strength and stillness of a benedictory chorus. Sensing its innate sense of calm and assurance, Watchorn sought to give the music new life through words that would illuminate its emotional core. Those words came from his father, Major Julian Watchorn, whose poetic text - titled Benediction: The Hope of Christ - speaks of grace, love, joy, and the sustaining power found in Christ. The verses provide a clear spiritual lens through which conductors, performers, and listeners alike can experience the music. Whether heard as a musical benediction or a stand-alone concert work, Hope provides a meaningful and deeply moving moment of stillness amid the noise of modern life. Based on a poem by Gustaf Froding, King Lily of the Valley is a poetic and regal musical tribute to the delicate flower that, in Froding's verse, appears as a young king surrounded by both sorrow and beauty. Originally composed by David Wikander and arranged for male choir (TTBB) by Rasmus Krigstrom, this evocative work has been masterfully reimagined for brass band by Norwegian arranger and composer Espen Wallacher Haukas and created for Bjorsvik Brass's performance at Siddis Brass 2025. The brass band version retains the choral character and emotional depth of the original, weaving lush harmonies and lyrical phrasing into a rich soundscape. A deeply expressive addition to any brass band repertoire - blending Nordic choral tradition with the grandeur and warmth of the brass band sound. Seaside Odyssey is a celebration of the British seaside! The music represents a juxtaposition between natural and manmade elements; there are two main musical themes - the reflective sea (a wordless setting of John Masefield's Sea Fever) and a more lively 'seaside' theme, heard separately in different ways and later together. From childhood memories, sand, beach and cliffs to cafes, ice creams, fish and chips, buckets and spades, boating trips, beach huts, bandstands, piers, theatres, gardens, mini golf, arcades and more, Seaside Odyssey is a journey from dawn to dusk with the sea at the heart of the music. This work was commissioned by Grimethorpe Colliery Band for its seaside tour, August 2023, where it performed at Paignton, Lyme Regis, Weymouth, Shanklin and Herne Bay. Includes optional poems and words specially curated from poets associated with the seaside towns, which can be read before a performance. This powerful and evocative work by Australian-New Zealand composer Fendall Hill pays tribute to the ANZAC soldiers who passed through Weymouth, Dorset during World War I. Inspired by first-hand accounts, the piece follows the emotional journey of a young soldier - from eager enlistment, through the harrowing Gallipoli campaign, to recovery and reflection in Weymouth. Structured in four movements, the music captures anticipation, fear, fierce resistance, and eventual healing, culminating in a moment of remembrance. The hymn tune Wareham -written by Dorset composer William Knapp - features prominently as a thematic thread, honouring the region's historical connection to the ANZAC legacy. A deeply moving addition to the brass band repertoire, this work is both a musical narrative and a heartfelt gesture of gratitude to the people of Dorset for their care and ongoing commemoration of the ANZACs.
