New London Pictures represents elements of London in the 21st Century. The Millennium Bridge describes the pedestrians journey across this wonderful new landmark bridge over the Thames, starting at the imposing Tate Modern, crossing the busy river, and onwards to St. Pauls Cathedral with its bells ringing out over the great city. London Eye is an incredibly large ferris wheel situated on the South Bank of the River Thames. This movement depicts a flight on this riverside wheel, at the top of which the panoramic view of London is breath-taking and the expanse of the music is a suitable depiction of the view. As with all modern cities, London is over-crowded with motor vehicles. London is the first major city in Europe to adopt a Congestion Charge, and this piece (with its stop and go traffic lights) is both racy and comical. Fanfare & Funk - Sam Fisher
This original work for brass band is the perfect choice to open a concert of contest programme. At just over three minutes, the music is in two clear sections, depicting the contrasting styles of traditional fanfare and modern funk. After a flourishing fanfare opening, the Cornets and Trombones lead a verse of the opening motif, accompanied by a rhythmically diminished version of the same motif from the Euphoniums and Baritones. This ostinato then leads us into a great entertaining funk section, with each section of the band rising to their feet as the piece builds to an exciting finale that is sure to engage audiences of all ages!

Between the Two Rivers was commissioned by Fanfare Prins Hendrik, from Aalst in the Netherlands. The title derives from the fact that the town of Aalst lies between two tributaries of the River Dommel. The community is a highly religious one, so the famous Luther chorale, Ein' Feste Burg, was an obvious choice for Philip Sparke to use as the theme for this new work. It takes the form of a theme with four contrasting variations. Variation 1 is a moto perpetuo, variation 2 has a slower march like feel, variation 3 is a sinister slow movement and the final variation is in the form of a lyrical fugue. Between The Two Rivers is sure to become a major work in modern brass band repertoire.Duration: 15:00

It was for this hymnbook that he wrote the tune 'Eventide' to the words, 'Abide with Me' by Henry Francis Lyte. This version, for trombone solo and brass band, was commissioned by Brett Baker.

This work was specially commissioned as the test piece for a new brass band competition in 1971, held at the Royal Albert Hall, London. It is in three movements, the titles of which all have literary connotations. The first movement, Dialogue takes the form of 'conversations' between the instruments, based on the opening melody announced in unison on cornets and euphoniums. A second theme is introduced on the flugel horn and developed alongside this, creating a sonata form shell.The second movement, Soliloquy is dedicated to the memory of Gilbert Vinter - a composer who did so much in the 1960s to bring the brass band into the modern world. The movement is poignant in mood, which is depicted by a cornet solo announced after a brief introduction. The middle section builds to a powerful climax, at which point the opening theme of the first movement is heard again. Tranquillity returns however, with a solo trombone now playing the original theme with other instruments adding decorative accompanying patterns.The final movement, Epigram, creates strong rhythmic contrasts and exploits the more virtuoso character of the brass band. The middle section, with its changing time patterns and open expansive melody, suggests a 'big-country' style. A rhythmically charged coda concludes the work in exciting fashion.Duration: 12.00
