£59.95Concerto Grosso (Brass Quartet with Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Gregson, Edward
Concerto Grosso was commissioned in 1972 by the Scottish Amateur Music Association for the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland.I took as my starting point the 18th century concerto grosso form with its element of contrast between small and large instrumental forces. The concertino (solo) group consists of cornet, horn, trombone and euphonium. The work is cast in one continuous movement (the old concerto grosso was often in three or more). The single movement is cast in the arch-like version of the ritornello form which was the mainstay of the baroque concerto. There are three main episodes which alternate with the ritornello and these exploit slow lyrical melodies as well as more rhythmically charged music. The final coda contrasts the ritornello material with the concertino group's own material, bringing the work to a resounding conclusion.- Edward GregsonDuration: 8.00

Eriskay Love Lilt is a traditional Gaelic melody from the Western Isles of Scotland, sensitively arranged here by Andrew Duncan as a cornet solo with brass band accompaniment.This arrangement was written in 2001 for Phillip McCann and was first played by him with the Hepworth Band at the 2002 Leek Music Festival in Derbyshire, England. It has also since been recorded by Eleanor Ferguson with the Whitburn Band on Reflections of Freedom.Andrew Duncan comments: The Isle of Eriskay (Eirisgeigh) lies forty miles off the North West coast of Scotland in the North Atlantic. It is a small island, only two kilometres square and lies between the larger islands of South Uist and Barra. Eriskay is one of the islands which form the archipelago known as the Western Isles or Na h-Eileanan an Air. The Eriskay Love Lilt is a hauntingly beautiful tune which is typical of the greater number of traditional Gaelic melodies in that it is largely based on the Aeolian mode, the black notes on the piano.Also available with piano accompanimentor as a solo with brass ensemble (10-piece).

Written in three movements without a break, this work was inspired by melodies of a popular nature. The first movement features two opposing modal melodies: one is very bright and lively, the other dark and tuneful. Various motifs are developed to offer highly contrasting musical events. The second movement is very peaceful, with a melody resembling a lullaby. To conclude the piece, the last movement delivers a festive dance with a swing feel. Commissioned by the Swiss Music Association, this very accessible work is mostly intended for small ensembles or those with mixed instrumentation. Kevin Houben created with When the Lights Go Down, a wonderful chorale that can be a moment of reflection in any concert program. The resigned, magnificent melodies at the beginning of this composition slowly build up to a highlight with an increasing orchestration. The piece starts with a suggestive Adagio Meditativo, after which the main theme is immediately announced. A central bridge section takes the listener along through the different spheres at which the melodic and rhythmic drums embellish the chorale melodies. Thematic elements from the introduction brings the piece to a quiet and peaceful end. The sheer simplicity with which this work is written, makes it a resplendent, magnificent concert piece. Written for the Chicago Staff Band's tour of England in 2015, this exhilaratingwork was premiered at The Salvation Army's Boundless International Congress at London's O2 Arena to an audience of 20,000 people. The piece is structured as a through-composed triptych, weaving together the popularcontemporary worship songs Shine on Us (Michael W. Smith) and Speak, O Lord (Keith and Kristin Getty) with the historic Salvationist anthem The World for God (Evangeline Booth) to explore themes of light, guidance, and mission. The work opens with energy and rhythmic drive, centering on Shine on Us. A stark contrast follows in the meditative middle section. Here, the music explores the contemplative depths of Speak, O Lord, featuring the solo horn. The final section introduces a nostalgic and stirring reference to General Evangeline Booth's classic hymn, The World for God. The finale juxtaposes all three themes. As the disparate melodies intertwine and layer upon one another, the music builds to a triumphant climax - a representation of 'illumination' that celebrates a shared faith across generations. Cobb & Frederic WeatherlyARRANGER: Laurie JohnstonA great collection of war songs from The Battle of Waterloo to The SommeThe four main melodies in this piece are..1 Over the hills and Far Away.This song dates back as far as Queen Anne but was popular among soldiers during the Napoleonic Wars. Probably the most well known version these days is that by John Tams from the television series Sharpe.2 The Green Hills of Tyrol.This is one of the oldest tunes played by pipe bands today although originally written by Rossini for the William Tell ballet music. Pipe major John MacLeod of the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders heard it played by a Sardinian Military band during the Crimean War and transcribed it for pipes as a tribute to the number of VC's won by Scottish regiments in this conflict. It became very well known when Andy Stewart took the tune for his song The Scottish Soldier.3 Goodbye Dolly Gray.This is a music hall song by Will D. Cobb and was popularised as a Boer War anthem. It was written during the earlier Spanish - American and held it's popularity through to the first world war.4 Roses of Picardy.Written by Frederick Wetherly in 1916 it became a very big hit with the soldiers fighting in the trenches. Picardy is a region of northern France where the Somme battlefields are to be found which among other things possibly accounts for the songs great popularity. It sold on average 50.000 copies a month during the great war.

Three connected movements each with their own character. Prelude is energetic and riving, featuring highly syncopated melodies and frequent changes of key and phrase length. The central Toccata is a series of traditional cadenzas for cornet and euphonium that ends ina virtuoso duet for the two soloist and leads directly into the Fugue. The baroque-style fugue keeps breaking out into episodes of 'Swingle' bebop.
