Pines of Rome (Complete Version), The - Respighi, O.

A NEW EDITION is now in preparation and will be issued at the British Brass Band Championships on October 10th 2015. See NIGEL and MARY DURNO at the JUST MUSIC stand, where it will be available for inspection and for sale. The arranger has made some very small revisions and corrections and is confident that this new presentation will be very welcome. It can now be ordered on this site as usual, but delivery will be held until the new edition is available. The manuscript version is now withdrawn.Pines of the Villa Borghese - Children are at play in the pine groves of Villa Borghese; they dance round in circles. They play at soldiers, marching and fighting, excited by their own cries, they come and go in swarms like swallows in the evening. The Pines close to a Catacomb - Suddenly the scene changes -- we see the shades of the pine trees fringing the entrance to a catacomb. From the depth rises the sound of a mournful chant, floating through the air like a solemn hymn, and gradually and mysteriously dispersing. The Pines of the Gianicolo. The evening air is warm: the pine-trees of the Janiculum hill stand distinctly outlined in the clear light of the full moon as it looks out over the city of Rome below. A nightingale is heard singing.Pines of the Appian Way - It's a misty dawn on the Appian Way, solitary pine trees guarding the landscape. The muffled, marching tread of footsteps becomes louder and louder. Trumpets sound and, in the brilliance of the newly-risen sun, a consular army marches forth along The Sacred Way, finally ascending in triumph to the Capitol to celebrate "A Triumph."

The Red Machine - Peter Graham

The Red Machine was commissioned by the London-based Band of the Coldstream Guards. Among the band?'s duties is the famous changing of the guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace where their reputation for precision marching has led to them being described as the ?"Red Machine?".The music reflects the title and heritage of this fine group; from the aggressive, machine-type music of the opening, the contrasting nostalgic French-flavoured waltz through the recapitulation and vivace finale. Listeners may hear references to music associated with the band, from Holst (the Planets) through the opening phrase of the chorale Ein Feste Burg - familiar to British Guards Bands from the troop march Huguenots. The version for brass band was made for the Black Dyke Band, Music Director Nicholas Childs, and premiered by them during the Gramercy Music 10th Anniversary Concert in the Maxwell Hall University of Salford, on May 7 2004.

The St Louis Blues - Sandy Coffin, W C Handy

Two-Step MarchCommissioned by John Wallace, this arrangement of The St Louis Blues has been crafted by Sandy Coffin through close listening of the available recordings of the Harlem Hellfighters Band. Sandy had been heavily involved with the Historic Brass Society symposium 2017 held in New York and assisted John with his research on this fascinating band and the style of music it generated.Eye-witness accounts refer to the 369th band ‘dancing’ rather than ‘marching’. Above all, in modern performance, finding a ‘dancing beat’ is crucial to a successful performance of this Ragtime march in order to do justice to the great pioneering work of James Reese Europe.Note the flutter-tonguing and use of muting, the counter-melody in soprano cornet, and the wilder and yet wilder nature of each repetition of the Chorus.Look and Listen:Background to the Harlem HellfightersThe US Army 369th Regiment, made up largely of African-Americans from New York, became known as the Harlem Hellfighters because of the heroic reputation which accrued to them during the actions they engaged in during the First World War in Europe.James Reese Europe was one of the most active African-American composer/musical directors in the pre-war American music scene. The legendary Harlem Hellfighters Band, which he assembled in 1917 from African-American and Puerto Rican musicians, came at an important transitional point in musical history. A new form of music called jazz was emerging from Ragtime and the performing style of Europe’s band was immersed in the flow of this new direction.Europe’s Harlem Hellfighters influenced and inspired everyone who heard them, including the welcoming crowd when they disembarked in France, bowled over by their swinging rendition of La Marseillaise. Reese Europe became a war hero, commanding a machine-gun unit as well as the band.On return from War in 1919 the band led a ticker-tape parade along Fifth Avenue in New York and soon made about 30 shellac recordings. These recordings display some of the fingerprints of their performing style: ragging, improvising, muting, wailing, smearing (their word for glissando) – and from the evidence of their recordings they took the printed page as a blueprint for individuality. In May 1919 during the Hellfighters’ triumphant coast-to-coast tour after their return, James Reese Europe was tragically murdered, bringing to premature close, at the age of 39, the work of a great musical innovator.

The Enigma Machine - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Enigma Machine takes its name from the famous cipher machine used by the Germans in World War Two. The wartime Enigma cipher was cracked at Bletchley Park by teams of British code-breakers, including the legendary Cambridge mathematician Alan Turing. Some of Britain’s finest brains of the period worked to decipher Enigma messages. Key to their success was working with UK industry to produce machines which automated various code-breaking tasks. One important collaboration was with the engineers at the Post Office (a predecessor of BT) who designed and built the world’s first electronic computer ‘Colossus’ which was a pioneering achievement in 1940’s wartime Britain.Their collaborative work was part of a top-secret operation called ‘Ultra’ which proved to be vital in the defeat of Nazi Germany. When performing this piece it is important to note that you will require the use of a WW2 siren. You can use either a real machine or a sound effect that can be played through a speaker system.During this piece there are many and varied morse code messages played by the different members of the band. These various instructions and messages have been taken from books and documents highlighting the types of messages that were sent to various military groups during the war. This piece uses a variety of musical styles: From the jumbled eerie messages given by the Germans at figure A, to the combat scenes at B and beyond, the military marching at G and the reference to Walton’s Spitfire Fugue at H. The middle movement features a quotation from the last post and then after a recapitulation of the opening material with embedded morse code throughout, the piece climaxes with a development of the famous last post motif to a tub-thumping ending.

When The Saints - Traditional - Paul Duffy

The precise origins of the folk song "When the Saints Go Marching In" or "The Saints" is unknown but it is believed to originate from Belgium and is thought to have been used originally as a hymn tune.Since the late 19th Century, it has become a jazz standard of the American song-book and has been performed and recorded by a wide variety of artists. From the great jazz performers Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald through to the silver screen by Judy Garland and to the popular music scene by performers such as Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton and more recently Bruce Springsteen. The melodies biggest advocate has to be the thousands of world-wide jazz bands playing in the New Orleans style, which is as popular today as it was at its inception. It is in this New Orleans style that Paul Duffy has arranged this ageless classic for soprano cornet and brass band. A swinging solo line, which gives you the opportunity to show off your improvisational skills, is accompanied by approachable ensemble writing which captures the flavour and excitement of carnival time.
