£66.88Sinfonietta - Saints and Devils (Brass Band) Rob Wiffin
Saints and Devils is a challenging three movement work: Dance with the Devil (4.31), A Glimpse of Paradise (4.42) and Reyes Magos (3.40). I wrote it when I was living in Spain where the Catholic culture is still much more prevalent than in the UK.The first two movements are a transition from dark to light; Dance with the Devil is aggressive and occasionally macabre whereas A Glimpse of Paradise is serene. The first and final parts of the second movement were originally written for a sequence in the Royal Military Tattoo 2000, played under the John Magee poem High Flight - 'Oh I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth ............ Put out my hand, and touched the face of God' - with videos of eagle owls in flight dramatically projected onto the buildings of Horse Guards in Whitehall, London.The last movement, Reyes Magos, is the joyous fiesta of the Three Kings. £33.43Romance (Brass Band) Rob Wiffin
This simple little romance was written in the style of a Catalan folk song. It is entirely original but was undoubtedly influenced by the arrangements of Catalan folk songs for guitar by Miguel Llobet (1878-1938). Typical of the style, the tune is in 6/8 with a gentle lilt and has just one rather refined outburst of passion before retreating back into its shell. £33.43Principio (Brass Band) Rob Wiffin
Principio is a vivacious concert opener. The word 'Principio' means start or beginning in both Spanish and Italian and this piece sets out to be just that - an energetic concert opener. Most of the melodic material is derived from the main theme which starts and ends the piece with its slightly lopsided rhythm. The piece is mostly conventional in language though with a touch of crunch here and there. I recently revised it, but originally composed it quite a few years ago and, at the time, showed it to Philip Sparke during the course of some composition lessons with him. Joy Unbound was finished on 31st July 2022 - the day the English Lionesses won Euro 2022 at Wembley. The euphoric nature of the piece fits the exuberance of the occasion. There are some fast semiquaver runs and a few moments where it might be very tempting to play in the wrong place, but otherwise it is not too technically difficult. This is a song-setting giving an opportunity for some lyrical expression. It started life as a song on the subject of gold but I wanted to see if it would stand alone as an instrumental piece. The gentle lilt of the 5/4 melody suggests a lullaby although the texture of the piece builds in an un-lullaby-like fashion towards the end. This vivacious calypso seeks to capture the vital rhythm and spirit of Caribbean dance music. It was written just after a visit to the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. Calypso music was everywhere and its beat was highly infectious. £33.43Expectans Expectavi (Brass Band) Charles Wood trs. Jonathan Corry
Written as an elegy in memory of his son Patrick and the poet Charles Hamilton Sorley - both killed in World War I - this choral anthem is regarded as the high-water mark of Irish composer Charles Wood's romantic Anglican church music. This arrangement by Jonathan Corry transcribes the work for full brass band, translating Wood's vocal counterpoint and warm harmonic colors into the brass medium.Wood set his piece to the final two stanzas of Sorley's (1895-1915) poem:This sanctuary of my soulUnwitting I keep white and whole,Unlatched and lit, if Thou should'st careTo enter or to tarry there.With parted lips and outstretched handsAnd listening ears Thy servant stands,Call Thou early, call Thou late,To Thy great service dedicate.The Latin title translates to 'I have been waiting and waiting.' The text contrasts the busyness of external life with a hidden, illuminated sanctuary kept ready within the soul.As a teacher of counterpoint and fugue at Cambridge, Wood taught notable pupils including Ralph Vaughan Williams, Arthur Bliss, Nicholas Gatty, Cecil Armstrong Gibbs, and W. Seamlessly merging the traditional English carol The First Nowell with Johann Pachelbel's beloved Canon in D, A Christmas Canon is a captivating arrangement designed to bring rich texture and emotional depth to your band's winter concert repertoire.Suitable for intermediate to advanced bands, the piece opens Adagio sostenuto with a gently rolling, scalic ostinato in the euphonium and lower brass, establishing the unmistakable harmonic ground bass of Pachelbel's masterpiece. Over this foundation, expressive solo lines in the flugel and horns gracefully weave the familiar melody of The First Nowell into the texture.As the arrangement unfolds, the scoring gradually builds density and counterpoint. £33.43The Red Kite (Euphonium Solo with Brass Band) Rob Wiffin
At one time the Red Kite was close to national extinction in the UK but now it is possible to admire this distinctive bird of prey with its red colouring and forked tail. I love watching it soaring so gracefully through the sky. I attempted to catch that feeling in this solo composed for Martin Smith. In writing it I had in mind making the euphonium glide solitary and effortlessly, occasionally swooping down then reclaiming its high altitude.To create the desired atmosphere, I avoided too many root position chords and enhanced the feeling of floating by adding notes to a lot of the harmony, giving it subtle colour. The harmonic rhythm is slow but the movement switches in the way that the Red Kite can make slight changes of direction by minor adjustments of its tail.
