"The Coventry Carol" dates back to the 16th century and is one of three songs from a nativity play entitled "Pageant of the Shearman and Tailors" which was traditionally performed in Coventry. The carol itself depicts the "Massacre of the Innocents" in the nativity narrative from the "Gospel of Matthew", in which King Herod, orders the execution of all baby boys under the age of two in the vicinity of Bethlehem. In this Rhapsody, Karl Whelan takes the familiar tune and turns it into an impressive showcase for bands looking to give the audience something different and very enjoyable for their festive concerts.

"Amalies Christmas" is a Norwegian TV series for children, produced by NRK in 1995, and broadcasted again in 19976, and in 2000.The program consisted of 24 episodes, and follows Amalie Wang (Anne Marie Ottesen) making preperations forChristmas in an old house where there lived goblins. The program was the first of many to follow, based on the author Gudny I. Hagens characters. The music is composed by Philip A. Kruse, and all episodes ended with the goblin family (HaraldHeide-Steen jr., Brit Elisabeth Haagensli og Pia Borgli) singing "Lullaby for small goblins".This arrangement for young concert band may be performed with different instrumental soloist or vocalist.Chords are included for piano/guitar. This enduringly popular seasonal song has long been a Christmas favourite, even though the lyrics don't mention 'Christmas' at all. The words were by Dick Smith (1901-1935) and the music by Felix Bernard (1897-1944). The inspiration was reportedly a visit by Smith to Honesdale's (his hometown) Central Park when it was covered in snow.The first recording was made by Richard Himber's Ritz-Carlton Orchestra in 1934. The same year Guy Lombardo and his band, The Royal Canadians, took the song to number 2 in the US Billboard Chart, where it stayed for 9 weeks. It has since been recorded by over 150 artists, the most successful versionsbeing by Perry Como and the Andrews Sisters, both released in 1946.

The Star and a Rose is a big-scale Christmas piece for band, featuring four seasonal chorales.The first is a Gregorian-like chant Hodie Christus natus est.In this section of the piece, a soloist can be placed away from the band, maybe on a gallery. The soloist can be a tenor instrument, maybe trombone, or you can feature a vocal soloist.After this, the music leads us on to the old German Christmas chorale Lo, how a rose e'er blooming. This song is given a fairly rhythmical treatment, but make sure that the melody is presented in a cantabile style.An interlude follows, before the piece presents one of the most used and loved Scandinavian Christmas chorales, Mitt hjerte alltid vanker (My Heart will always wander), composed by the Danish bishop Hans Adolph Brorson around 1732. This song is building towards a climax, before the solo horn brings it all down to the Stable view described in the lyrics.Then comes a transition that brings us in to the final section of the piece, which presents the international Christmas Carol Adeste Fideles. As many will notice, I have borrowed a section from David Wilcocks majestic harmonization towards the end.The title of the piece has its background form the lyrics in My heart will always wander, where the text speaks about the stars in the sky. But also in the latin text for Adeste Fideles:Stella duce, Magi, Christum adorantesThe Rose is of course from the lyrics in the chorale Lo, how a Rose.

This has become a Christmas song that has its roots in a love duet between the young Fleksnes and classmate Victoria. The class will be competing with a duet in a song competition. The text gives hope of love and links it to Christmas traditions. "A Dream of Christmas, About Love" is the first line of the text. "The Young Fleksnes" runned as advent calender on TV Norge in 2010. This arrangement feature an flugelhorn soloist and a euphonium soloist. Please be aware of the dynamics between soloists and accompaniment. Adjust the dynamics according to the musicians in the ensemble.
