DescriptionCanzonetta is a tenor horn solo with optional brass band or piano accompaniment.Canzonetta was one of my earliest compositions, written in my early days as an undergraduate. Along with a companion piece called Caprice it was written for an old friend, Louise Hunt (now Louise Skillander), to whom it is dedicated. We had both been in the Northop Youth Band together, and both pieces were the result of a conversation about the lack of 'good tenor horn solos' for lower section and youth players at the time.With more mature consideration the Caprice has been consigned to the dustbin of history, but the simplicity of Canzonetta has allowed it to stand the test of time with a few minor scoring revisions.Performance Notes:Percussion instruments required are 2 x timpani, glockenspiel, suspended cymbal, concert bass drum (NOT a kit/pedal bass drum) and tam-tam. Sing Sang Sung - Gordon Goodwin - Reid Gilje
"Sing Sang Sung" is inspired by "Sing Sing Sing" from the legendary 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert by Benny Goodman & His Orchestra. The famous "Jungle Groove" presented by drummer Gene Krupa and the opening riff from the 1938 performance is retained in this brilliant, swinging tune composed by Gordon Goodmin.The style changes from swing to "jungle groove" (with extensive use of tom-toms), is essential for both these tunes.The best sound recording of "Sing Sang Sung" is "Swingin' For the Fences" by Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band released in 2000. But, you should also listen to the original "Sing Sing Sing" from the 1938 Benny Goodman recording as well!

REJOICE, THE LORD IS KING (Brass Band Set) - Kenneth Downie
The title of this work comes from the first line of Charles Wesley's hymn 'Rejoice, the Lord is King! Your Lord and King adore' which is set to Handel's majestic tune, Gopsal. The Handelian influence shows in more than the use of the tune itself as the opening pays homage to the Coronation Anthem 'Zadok the Priest' after which the free variations flow in quick succession. This major work was written for The International Staff Band which gave the first performance at the Epic Brass Gala Concert which followed the 2001 National Brass Band Championships.

SAINTS ON PARADE (Brass Band Set) - Kevin Norbury
Originally composed for the 2004 UK tour by the New York Staff Band, this American-style concert opener contains three well-known tunes which are subjected to a range of musical styles synonymous with the USA. 'Always cheerful', 'I've got the joy, joy, joy, down in my heart' and 'O, when the saints go marching in' are given the marching band, big band and Sousa-style march treatment.

Several years ago, I attended an Imperial Brass concert in the United States, which featured soloist Sheona White on tenor horn. I was so impressed with her playing that I asked if I could write something for her. The result of the conversation is this piece, Romance for Horn. I thought I'd compose something melodically flowing with grace and tenderness that was very carefully crafted to match Sheona's beautiful sound on the tenor horn. As for the overall structure of the work, it basically consists of flowing melodic lines in the solo part supported by a pulsing harmonic current that runs throughout.- Joseph TurrinDuration: 5.15

Lord of the Lake is a work in three separate movements which tells the legend of the "Sea of Flines". Stphane Coquet, the conductor of the Flines-lez-Rches concert band, wanted to celebrate the 140th anniversary of his band by commissioning this work. The piece can be performed either on its own, or with a narrator who intervenes between each movement, telling this legend where children and their parents thwart the cruelty of a lord holed up in his castle.Duration: 7.45

Philip Sparke wrote Heritage as a grand concert march in the tradition of Elgar and Walton. After a brief introduction, the march's long main theme is presented: first in subdued tones, then taken up by the full band, adding a tenor counter melody. The following bridge passage leads to a change of key and the traditional trio section. A repeat of previous motifs leads to a return of the main theme, followed by a short closing coda.Duration: 4.45
