£33.67March - The Green Island (Brass Band) Espen Haukas
This march was written to mark the centennial jubilee of the renowed Manger Musikklag. The title for the piece comes from the many descriptions of the county Manger Musikklag originates from, on the island of Radoy. As the composer writes, 'It is a uniquely lush and beautiful landscape, which is echoed on the famously green trimmed jackets worn by the band at concerts and competitions. Radoy is not without reason called "the green island". With regards to the composition, I have not tried to reinvent the idea of a march. But rather to present my own take on its familiar style. The piece is meant to have a reassuring familiarity about it, whilst the ending will surely make the audience smile.' This sprightly march was the result of a request for a march in traditional style, incorporating a sacred tune that is popular in Holland. It was commissioned by Egbert Scheffer and Brass Band Valerius. The mood is distinctly chirpy and jovial, with a lightness of touch and a generous dose of good humour. This item will be ideal for bands looking for a new modern-day march to freshen up their concert programmes. St Julien is a town near the French/Belgian border which witnessed several battles during WW1. The composer Arthur W. Hughes (1870-1950) was born in Kingston, Ontario, and left home when he was quite young to perform with circus bands in US. He wrote several marches and a few other compositions but this one, dating from 1918, is the most well-known. The march also works as a fast circus march. Here it has been expertly arranged for brass band by Dr. Keith M. Wilkinson. £41.15Christmas Day (Brass Band) Gustav Holst arr. Philip Rayment
VIEW SCORE PDF Well-known English composer, Gustav Holst (1874-1934) wrote this choral fantasy in 1910, about five years before his renowned orchestral suite, The Planets. The piece was originally composed for SATB choir and orchestra and dedicated to the students of Morley College, where Holst taught music. In the years since, it has been arranged for various combinations of voice and/or instruments. This arrangement is in the original key and could be adapted for use with choir and/or organ. Christmas Day features three carols in their entirety: Good Christian Men, Rejoice; God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen and Come, Ye Lofty, Come, Ye Lowly (an old Breton melody). There are also references to The First Nowell. Although well-received initially, this work (like many of Holst's) was neglected for many years and has not been widely recorded. It is hoped that it will be useful for brass bands during the festive season, particularly in a large acoustic. VIEW SCORE PDF The arranger, Kenneth Downie writes: 'This music was commissioned by Mike Griffiths, Music Director of Riviera Concert Brass, based in Torquay in Devon, England. It is developed around the hymn tune Margaret, and written in memory of the lady of that name who was a renowned supporter of, and generous donor to the band. The graceful melody was written by Timothy Matthews (1826-1910), and it is usually associated with the words of the hymn, the first verse of which says: Thou didst leave thy throne and thy kingly crown When thou camest to earth for me; But in Bethlehem's home was there found no room For thy holy nativity, O come to my heart, Lord Jesus; There is room in my heart for thee. I feel that there is a strong emotional core to this lovely tune and any performance should seek to bring out this quality, in a musical manner.' PDF download includes score and full set of parts. £64.95Purcell Variants (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Meechan, Peter
Purcell Variants is based on Purcell's Queen Mary's Funeral Music, which consists of four canzonas (for brass), two elegies and an anthem.The first movement begins by sounding some of Purcell's original music in the trombones, underpinned by a timpani roll with the cornets articulating the beginnings and endings of the phrases. This leads into a cadenza for cornet and horn before the movement heads in different directions, leading us to its mysterious end, where the original music is sounded this time in the 'stabs' of the muted cornets.Originally composed for the funeral of Queen Mary in 1695, Purcell's original funeral music was used later that same year for Purcell's own funeral - he died aged only 34. The second movement is an elegy, inspired by this story. After an introduction (started by cornets sounding a last post), the main melody of the movement is introduced by the solo euphonium, with other solo roles for an off-stage soprano cornet, and trombone. This is then taken over by the cornets who lead us into the middle section of the movement. This is a quasi-funeral march, inspired by the image of Purcell's coffin being taken to its final resting point. The main melody returns in the euphonium, flugel horn and soprano cornet, this time more elaborated. The movement ends with a snare drum fading away - perhaps a metaphor. The Finale is a fast and furious movement combining thematic material from the two previous movements with new rhythmical ideas. This takes us through to the final passage - the triumphant return of Purcell's original theme.Duration: 13.00

£59.87The Glory of Colour (Brass Band) Ivan G. Andrews
This work by Ivan Andrews was inspired by the large Baptistry window of the new Coventry Cathedral and will be suitable both as a contest or concert work. The window was conceIved and designed by Basil Spence and was intended to be a worldwide experience. When installed it was claimed to be "the single largest window in stained glass that hitherto had ever been contemplated and brought into existance." The stained glass design was done by artist John Piper and when completed was described by Bishop Bardsley as a "triumphant expression of faith, a faith encapsulated in the 'glory of colour'".* Hence the title for the piece. The composer writes: 'When thinking of this music the traditional tune now often called Monks Gate kept coming to me. The words often sung to this tune were penned by John Bunyan and each stansa ends with the words "To be a pilgrim". The Cathedral in Coventry, although a Christian Church, is designed to bring all faiths together in Unity - there is a "Unity Chapel" opposite the Baptistry window so the concept of pilgrimage seemed perfectly apt to me. The music is therefore designed to reflect many colours as there are many expressions of faith. Single fragments of the Monks Gate tune are used as a basis for what might be deemed 'variations'. The tune is heard in full towards the end of the piece and then the music rises to a climax of bright brilliant white light. The colours of the window are darker on the outer edges but they all circulate towards the brilliant white at the centre - representing the source of all faith.' The composer writes: 'One of my all time favourite films is Clue (1985) based on the board game of the same name (Cluedo, if you're from the UK). Clue follows the night of six guests who are invited to a mansion for dinner. The host, Mr. Boddy is murdered, and the guests must work together to find the killer before any more lives are lost. I implore you to give it a watch if you haven't already, even if it's just for Tim Curry's magical performance as The Butler. Running at 82 minutes, the film is over before you know it. I wanted to create a similar story here with Whodunnit?, which like it's inspiration, Clue, moves at an incredible pace as it follows a dinner party, to which our guests have been invited. This work is rather dark throughout and full of intentional cliches, for which, I make no apology!'
