Lament - to the Unknown - Andrew Stevenson

Lament ? to the Unknown was written in the memory of Rob Southwick, who passed away in Easter 2012. Rob was a talented musician who worked with many local music and drama groups around Doncaster; this piece pays homage to the immense musicianship and talent of Rob.The piece itself is very simple, both rhythmically and technically. The tempo is slow and calm, representing a reflective hymn. The basis of the piece is built on dissonant chords and atmospheric percussion which creates a wonderful soundscape of colour. The falling fourths of the distant trumpet calls emulate feelings of sadness and mourning and the somewhat disjointed melodies give the piece a mysterious sound. The piece grows to an emotional climax before settling down for a chilling end.

Fanfare for the Future - Andrew Stevenson

Fanfare for the Future was commissioned by the organisers of the annual Madhurst Brass Festival 2012 to open the final concert. The title pays homage to the James Watson Memorial Fund, the choice charity of the event, which gives opportunities to young brass players. The piece opens with an epic fanfare featuring the cornets and trombones and the remaining instruments join gradually. The music then shifts gear into an exciting, fast tempo. This section features different time signatures, tricky technical passages and some of the initial motifs from the start return. The music then slows down for a melodic euphonium solo followed by a cornet solo which gradually builds to an emotional climax. The music gains tempo for a final sprint to the end, where the music finishes with a climax of rich chords and fanfares.

A Brussels Requiem - Bert Appermont

The attacks in Brussels on 22 March 2016 created a shockwave throughout Belgium and the rest of the world. Equally, the attacks in Paris and Nice led to great public indignation, fear and disbelief. What has happened to the western world? Have our cultures grown apart to such an extent that we do not understand each other anymore? Bert Appermont's intention was to voice certain emotions that these acts of terror have caused: particularly fear, grief, anger, and helplessness. He uses the French children's song Au Claire de la Lune as a connecting thread throughout the work. This piece is also about hope and faith in another world, and is meant to pay homage to all victims, resulting in a dignified remembrance. The musical development is presented in four through-composed parts, titled Innocence, In Cold Blood, In Memoriam - We Shall Rise Again and A New Day. This work was commissioned by the Brassband Oberosterreich (Brass Band Upper Austria) to be played at the European Brass Band Championships 2017.

Backdraft - Hans Zimmer - Masato Myokoin

The hit movie Backdraft is one of the earliest soundtracks by award-winning Hollywood composer Hans Zimmer. Starring Kurt Russell amongst many other stars the film plays a dignigned homage to the highly dangerous life of fire workers. Behind the racing engines and blaring sirens the soundtrack is easily lost in the film but is highly charged and a fitting backdrop to the action on screen. This authentic arrangement by Masato Myokoin retains all the excitement and action of the original and will be a great addition to any concert or contest programme. Sure to be a blazing success!

    Metamorphosis - Jan de Haan

The opening of this three-movement work features an initial appearance of the thematic material that returns in various guises later on in the work. The leitmotiv centres on a minor second. A range of thematic variations is heard in the lively and energetic Metamorphosis One. This movement is interrupted by an atmospheric meno mosso, containing melodic passages that return to the opening theme. Metamorhosis Two is characterised by various changes in tempo and musical character. Seven different soloists transform the thematic material - each in their own way. This eventually culminates in a passionate tutti passage. The source of inspiration for Metamorphosis Three is the so-called BACH-motif, a musical autograph consisting of the notes B flat, A, C and B. This distinctive motif arises from the leitmotiv (here a descending minor second), which continues to evolve through various transpositions and transformations. For the composer, this spectacular last movement is an homage to one of the greatest and most influential composers in the history of music: Johann Sebastian Bach.

    Raveling Unraveling - Philip Sparke

WINNING PERFORMANCE EBBC LILLE 2016 Raveling, Unraveling - In Search of 'La Valse' was written for the Cory Band as their own-choice test piece for the 2016 European Brass Band Championships in Lille. The piece found its genesis in Sparke's The Unknown Journey (2014) for concert band, and the use of Ravel's La Valse as a structural undercurrent to the original piece is an act of reverence. Sparke's aim was to produce a work that is organic rather than episodic in nature. The composer's view is that little in music does this better than La Valse and for this reason he uses various sections of this masterpiece, both manipulated and quoted verbatim (including much of its stunningclosing passages) to provide the overall geography of his new work. As the music progresses, more of the Ravel appears, surfacing completely as the piece reaches its climax - a gesture of homage to the French master.

    232.778C - Paul McGhee

‘232.778?C’ was written during October 2016 and is a musical homage and reaction to Ray Bradbury’s ‘Farenheit 451’ and the illustrations of the novel by Ralph Steadman. It received its premiere on Sunday 20 th November at the 40 th Brass in Concert Championships at the Sage, Gateshead.‘232.778?C’ is the temperature at which paper will burn without the use of an accelerant. As the music begins with a spark the flames begin to grow, adding all that they encounter to their flame. Fire engine sirens can be heard through the mayhem and the dynamic and dissonance intensifies as the calls and screams of ‘London’s Burning’ begin to shriek from all directions. The music continues to grow in intensity until the flames have consumed everything, and all that remains are the crumbled ruins of all that was once there.
