This march was awarded first prize in the 1930 American Golden Jubilee National Music Competition and was published the same year in the first edition of the American Festival Series. It was subsequently re-printed in the General Series of 1984. Soderstroms imaginative use of syncopation and chromatic harmony brought a new, American sound to the Salvation Army march. For example, he took the old Salvation Army fight song Hark, hark my soul written and changes its metre from 6/8 to 4/4 while also syncopating it!

Programme Notes by Andrew Duncan:This arrangement is fairly simple and the strong melodic and rhythmic lines should help introduce inexperienced players to the concept of playing in 3 time. The triplets in the 3rd cornet/trumpet part and the 1st Baritone/Euphonium/Trombone part (and in the tambourine part) are played in unison and will greatly help to move the rhythm forward.The tune is in the 1st cornet/trumpet part up until letter B when it is played by the horns (in unison) and in harmony by the 1st Baritone/Euphonium/Trombone part, so there is plenty for all to play throughout the piece.The Percussion part is written for a Tambourine, and although it is optional, it would add colour to a performance of the arrangement.The Flexi-Collection ApproachFlexible scoring tailored to your needs - A perfect solution for expanding the repertoire of training and junior brass bands. Programme notes:The hauntingly beautiful theme from Jupiter, from The Planets Suite has a rare qualityexpressing both optimism and dignity which makes it a popular choice for many formalpublic events such as opening and award ceremonies.The tune is originally found in the Jupiter movement from the large-scale work fororchestra called 'The Planets Suite'. Written by the English composer Gustav Holt ThePlanets Suite is thought to be his finest work.The theme has a steady 3/4 rhythm which provides a contrast in terms of tempo andmeter to the rest of the movement, and has been made popular as a patriotic song called'I vow to Thee My Country'.Performance notes:This arrangement makes use of a gradual increase in dynamics, beginning p and ending ff.With this gradual increase in dynamics is a gradual increase in the scoring starting offwith only the lower instruments playing p and ending up with everyone playing ff.The percussion part is very minimal in this arrangement (only 2 notes for the suspendedcymbal) and is an optional part.Just before the final chord there is a cut off marked in the parts. Arild Sandvold (1895 - 1984) began his studies at the Music Conservatory in Kristiania (Oslo) in 1906, in piano and organ as well as music theory. After his debut as organist and pianist, he had his debut as orchestral conductor in 1924. At the same time he also had two periods of studies in Leipzig. In addition to studies in piano and organ, he received tutoring in composition. He was a teacher at the Oslo Music Conservatory and organist and a cathedral cantor in Oslo for more than 50 years. Sandvold brought both Baroque and Romantic organ works to a wider audience. He wrote a number of works for organ, in addition to music for choir and orchestra. The polyfony of the lateBaroque and the harmony of the Romantic period serve as the basis of his musical style. "A Christmas Pastorale" arranged with thoughts about the brass bands possibility for sound and colour, and should be a nice piece to do on concerts in the Christmas time.

Programme Notes from Andrew Duncan:Like many of the arrangements in the Flexi-Collection - Popular Classics Series I have simplified the rhythms and time signature, etc. I have also omitted trills for ease of playing.Dynamics form a very important aspect of this arrangement and it is important to observe these, especially the p markings. Every dynamic from p through to ff is used as well as some crescendos.The 1st Cornet/Trumpet part is perhaps more difficult than in some of the other arrangements in the series, but the other parts are fairly simple in comparison.The Percussion part (which is optional) is unusual in that it calls for two 'Anvils' to be played.
