When it was announced that prolific composer Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and hit song writer Gary Barlow were to collaborate on a project to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, the public were left in little doubt that the music would be an instant hit. We were not disappointed! Gary Barlow travelled across the Commonwealth searching for instruments and voices to perform on the single and the 'Military Wives Choir' were also included in the final edition. Now available for the first time for brass band in an arrangement by Dave Houghton, this moving work projects the 'feel good' factor to your audience and is a perfect addition to a programme on both the bandstand and concert hall. This special arrangement by Andrew Cook was a commission by Rob Westacott to perform with the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band. The musical Les Miserables is the 3rd longest running show in Broadway history. The superb arrangement captures all the feelings of the original work and was given its debut performance at Parr Hall in Warrington on Saturday 27th March 2010. The work, arranged for one of the greatest cornet players, with one of the world's greatest brass bands, is a must in any cornet soloist's repertoire.

This novelty song is known worldwide following multiple recordings by Billy Jones, Billy Murray, Arthur Hall, Irving Kaufman, and others. Benny Goodman and his Orchestra also recorded the work which has helped keep up the songs popularity since its initial release in 1923. Writer Frank Silver may have been influenced by an actual shortage of Gros Michel bananas in the early 20th century. Now arranged as a trombone solo, this arrangement has two parts; the first being accessible to most soloists with an optional continued section, which is more intricate for more advanced soloists to enjoy. A great audience pleaser and repertoire item.

To some, the tragic story of the Penlee lifeboat, Solomon Browne, would need no introduction, and to some the pain felt is still very much a reality. The composer, born just a few weeks before that fateful night on the19th December 1981, has created this work as a musical homage to the bravery of the souls who lost their lives and has dedicated it to their memory. Penlee was commissioned by the Cornwall Youth BrassBand using funds bequeathed by Michael Pickett. The first performance was given by the Cornish Youth Brass Band, conducted by Ian Porthouse, at St. Michael's Church, Newquay, on 30th December 2008.Penleehas been voted into the Classic FM Hall of Fame 2011 at No.106. Not only is it the first time a brass work has been featured in the Hall of Fame, but it was also thehighest new entry. The work has subsequently been recorded by the Leyland Band, conducted by Jason Katsikaris, on the CD entitled Penlee.Brass Band Grade 4: Advanced Youth and 3rd Section Duration: 13 minutes

Cityscape was commissioned for the 't Stad Geblazen event, which took place during the weekend of European Heritage Days in 2024.This short concert piece describes the impressions given when approaching and visiting the beautiful Belgian city of Antwerp from the north across the river Scheldt. We first pass the busy bustle of the harbour, home to the impressive Port House. Then the old city comes into view: the graceful cathedral tower, surrounded by smaller church spires and modern buildings, dominates the distinctive skyline. After setting foot ashore, we are struck by the beautiful way the medieval buildings here blend harmoniously with modern architecture. Our walk through the city continues: we visit the serene cathedral and are impressed by the picturesque facades of and around the city hall, as well as the Brabo Fountain on the Grote Markt (Large Market Square). Finally, it is time to enjoy the merriment taking place on the many squares of the lively city centre.

Broadheath was commissioned by the Elgar International Brass Band Summer School for their 2024 course. The premiere took place in the Routh Hall at Bromsgrove School on Friday 26 July.It is in conventional march form, opening with a brief fanfare before the horns take up the main theme. This is then repeated by the full band before euphoniums and baritone announce the second subject. This builds to a stirring tutti passage utilising elements of the opening theme, which brings the opening section to a close.In honour of the summer school's tribute to Sir Edward Elgar (it is held in 'Elgar country'), the trio uses the opening melody of his 1st symphony as its main theme, decorating it with filigree work from the cornets. This is repeated on the full band and leads to a varied recapitulation of the opening material to bring the march full circle.

In 1956 Sir Kenneth MacMillan created a one-act ballet for the Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet, London. He selected the music from the two sets of English Dances which Sir Malcolm Arnold had written in 1950 and 1951 to great acclaim. The composer wrote two new dances, a Sarabande and a Polka, especially for the ballet, which was premiered at Sadler's Wells Theatre in June 1956. The two new dances have taken on a life of their own in the concert hall and are typical Arnold: the Sarabande contains one of his most memorable melodies and the Polka shows him at his quirky, tongue-in-cheek best.
