£125.00East Coast Pictures. - Nigel Hess
East Coast Pictures, originally written for wind band, have now been transcribed by Phillip Littlemore, introducing these exciting programmatic pieces to a wider audience. These three short 'pictures' wereinspired by several visits by the composer to a small part of the USA's East Coast, an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people. Shelter Island is a small island situated almost at the end of LongIsland, a few hours' drive east of New York. In the summer it becomes a crowded tourist trap, but in the winter it is gloriously deserted, and bravely faces the onslaught of the turbulent Atlantic, shrouded in sea mistsanddriving rain. In upstate New York lie the Catskill Mountains, an extraordinary combination of tranquillity and power, peace and majesty. Once seen they call you back again and again. New York ...or, to be precise, Manhattan.For anyone who is familiar with this bizarre and wonderful city, this 'picture' needs no explanation. For those not yet hooked, here is a foretaste of things to come.

Three Gentle Giantswas commissioned by Grenland International Brass Festival as a test piece for the 2nd division in 2008.Three Gentle Giants. The three giants each have their own monologue which leads into a conversation. They gather recognition and respect from each others views as the dialogue evolves. Eventually they find a more nutual and singular expression to their conversation.The giants are old with a long life behind them. This can be heard through a slow, melancholic waltz. A waltz is dance commonly linked to festiveoccasions, such as weddings, but for the giants it holds much more significance. It gives room to think about people they have met, placesthey have been, and all that life has given them.Quietly it ends, more or less like it began. Few operas have had such a remarkable history as Mussorgsky's masterpiece Boris Godunov. It exists in no less than three complete versions by the composer himself, as well as posthumous editions andorchestrations by Rimsky-Korsakov (from which this arrangement is taken), Shostakovich and others.The Coronation Scene is set in the Square of the Moscow Kremlin, between the Cathedral of the Assumption and theCathedral of Archangel Michael, the year is 1598. After being crowned as Tsar, Boris Godunov acknowledges the people's acclamations and the bells of the two cathedrals, as well as many churches within the vicinity, canbeheard ringing out across St Petersburg.Available here are the score and parts for Mussorgsky's Coronation Scene (Boris Godunov), as arranged for Brass Band by Phillip Littlemore.

"Cobalt" was commisioned by Modum Janitsjar as own choice piece for the Norwegian Wind Band Championships, third section in 2009. The Royal Cobalt Works of Modum were established in 1773 to extract cobalt ore from the local mines. The works were in operation until 1893. The cobalt was used in the production of cobalt blue pigment for the worlds porcelain and glass industry. To day it is a museum showing us how people at that time worked and lived. Most of the work was done by hand. There were also bad accidents with many fatalites. But in their free time there were dancing and drinking, and the entire piece ends with a dance-episode including a local tune.

Our song was commissioned by Knarvik Skolekorps for their junior band in 2020. They wanted an original piece that could challenge their young players.This became a suite in three movements with themes that run through the whole piece.In the 2. movement there is a possibility for the band to sing in Song of friendship.. Young people finding friendship through music, as I myself have done, is one of the nicest things one can experience, in my opinion.Should you choose not to sing, you can just play the notes as printed.Svein H. "Folklore" is a work for brass band and percussion loosely based on the story of the Norwegian woman accused of witchcraft, Anne Pedersdotter. She was sentenced to be burned at the stake in Bergen in the spring of 1590 and has since been frequently highlighted as Norway's most famous and talked-about witch.The work begins with the movement "Lyderhorn," depicting the mountain outside Bergen where witches gathered to plan magical actions against the city. Here, we hear the quietness of nature and the wind blowing through the trees before a new theme appears, which will come to life in the next movement. In the distance, the witches have started their ceremony.In the next movement, "Walpurgis Night," the witches perform their rituals to afflict the city with fire, disease, and natural disasters. The ceremony becomes more and more chaotic, violent, and compelling until the darkness of the night envelops us, concluding the section.The third movement describes the women's inner struggle against the harassment they faced when the people of Bergen suspected them of being witches. Rumors often turned into formal accusations from the legal system, and many were sentenced to death after undergoing trial. "From life to death through the fire."The fourth and final movement, "The Pyre," depicts the actual death sentence. You can hear the pyre being ignited and the flames growing and intensifying. It all culminates in a chorale as a memorial to the lives that were taken.

Vittorio Monti was born on January 6, 1868 in Naples (Italy). His musical education (Violin and composition), he enjoyed at the conservatory there. Around his 30's Monti went to Paris. He earned a living as a conductor and wrote several ballets and operettas. In his last years, before his death in 1922, Monti devoted himself to teaching and composing. His famous 'Czardas' has made his name known even today.Initially the Czardas was a Hungarian folk dance, but after the mid-nineteenth century it was even a dance for the upper-class. Czardas begins with a slow introduction, the Lassan (slow and sad), and then the fast part,Friska, follows. Czardas is not, as so many people think, typical gypsy music.

Aspects of Adiemus is a collection from one of the world's most popular composers, Karl Jenkins. Adiemus, literally translated, means 'we will draw near' and represents a musical language which can be heard on five award winning albums from the composer.Since Adiemus has risen in popularity around the world, it has become a growing entity meaning many different things to many different people. Vocally, the spread of influence grows wider all the time, taking in Arabic and African sounds as well as Celtic and ecclesiastical ones. The percussion too has expanded using Indian, Middle Eastern, Japanese, Chinese and even Australian instrumentation.The evolving nature of Adiemus has meant that it has been difficult to categorise. New age, classical crossover, world music, even pop. Karl sees this as a good sign: To me, Adiemus transcends labels. The fact that it reaches people of different backgrounds, faiths and cultures gives it a universal appeal which is special. The compositions can be spiritual, religious, meditative - it's open to move people in any away they choose to experience.Ironically, the Adiemus project got off the ground initially due to a television commercial for an airline. Karl Jenkins explains, I'd been toying with a new idea, completely separate to my work in advertising, but at this time, Jenkins Ratledge were commissioned to come up with the music for an airline commercial. We presented the client with a demonstration tape of one of my completed compositions and they loved it.That composition became known as Adiemus. The music for the airline commercial was aired and immediately drew interest from the public. Karl: It's ironic that a piece of music not originally intended for a TV commercial should end up on a TV commercial, and that this music became the springboard for the success of the Adiemus project.Expertly arranged by Peter Graham, Aspects of Adiemus features the eponymous Adiemus, an uplifting and instantly recognisable opener. Chorale - Za Ma Ba and Chorale - Vocalise are songs of sanctuary, the latter featuring a chamber group from within the band. The vibrant Song of the Spirit is a cornet feature, and the finale, Song of the Plains combines intense rhythmic energy with tribal harmonies. Duration is variable depending on movement selection and optional cuts.Duration: 20.00
