    Bilitis - Frances Lai

    Francis Lai is one of France's leading film music composers. His musical styles are very varied, ranging from contemporary jazz to classical. He is one of the pioneers in the creation of synthesiser sounds, samples and the use of 'computer' music. His film music has received awards from all over the world and in 1970 his score for Love Story secured him his only Oscar.Bilitis is a coming of age story centring on the exploits of a young girl during a summer vacation. This expertly crafted arrangement for soprano cornet and brass band is of the film's main title theme.

    Lisa L?n or Fair Lisa is a traditional Welsh folk-song. It is a lover's lament about his lost dead love, Lisa.Lisa L?n is a hauntingly beautiful melody and has been covered by a number of popular artists including Cerys Matthews and Katherine Jenkins. It was used extensively within the soundtrack for Paul Haggis's 2004 film Crash, a tense race relations film set in Los Angeles.This beautiful melody has been superbly arranged for brass band and percussion by Dan Price. Percussion plays a key role in this arrangement and includes, unusually, a part for acoustic guitar or synthesizer.

    Abide With Me - William Henry Monk

    The lyrics to Abide With Me were written as a poem in 1847 by Scottish Anglican Henry Francis Lyte. Lyte wrote the poem and set it to William Henry Monk's hymn tune ‘Eventide' as he lay dying from tuberculosis.The poem has been set with other melodies through-out its existence but it is the original pairing with Monk's tune that remains it's most popular and loved setting.In addition to regular use in memorial services, state occasions and festivals of remembrance, the hymn has made appearances in countless film and television programmes and is still sung regularly at the start of important sports events.Here a setting by renowned Welsh composer Karl Jenkins, transcribed for brass band by Prof. Peter Graham, ensures this popular hymn tune will remain an audience favourite for years to come.

    Autumn Leaves - Joseph Kosma

    Les Feuilles Mortes (Autumn Leaves) was a collaborative song between Joseph Kosma and Jacques Prevert for the 1946 film Les Portes de la Nuit where it was sung by Ir?ne Joachim. This transcription was made for the Briton Ferry Silver Band, and was first performed by them as part of their entertainment programme for the 2018 National Eistedfodd of Wales, held at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff.

    Highland Cathedral - Ulrich Roever & Michael Korb

    This lovely melody was composed by two German musicians who tried to emulate the popularity of the famous Scottish tune 'Amazing Grace'. The piece was an instant success and achieved a substantial degree of popularity after it was featured in the film, Four Weddings and a Funeral.It is usually performed with just pipes and drums, however this arrangement succeeds in joining this traditional classical melody, with a steady drum beat, and flowing contrapuntal descants and harmonies to create an epic opus.The arrangement was made for a performance in the Gala Concert in the Albert Hall, London, when it was performed by the Scottish Brass Band Champions, Scottish Co-op Band.The arrangement is functional with or without Bagpipes.

    Men of Harlech - Welsh Traditional

    Men of Harlech is a song and military march which describes events during the seven year long siege of Harlech Castle between 1461 and 1468. Commanded by Constable Dafydd ap Ieuan, the garrison held out in what is the longest known siege in the history of the British Isles.The music was first published without words in 1794 as Gorhoffedd Gwŷr Harlech (March of the Men of Harlech) in the second edition of The Musical and Poetical Relicks of the Welsh Bards, but it is said to be a much earlier folk air.Men of Harlech occupies an important place in Welsh national culture and gained international recognition when it was featured prominently in the 1964 film Zulu.This new arrangement comes from the pen of Welshman Gareth Wood. It cleverly fuses the tune to more exotic rhythms associated with Latin America and the Caribbean.

    I'll Walk With God - Paul Francis Webster & Nicholas Brodszky

    The 1954 film, The Student Prince, is based loosely on Sigmund Romberg's operetta, I'll Walk With God by Webster & Brodszky replacing one of the dated Romberg numbers. The part of the Prince was played by Edmund Purdom who lip-synched the songs to recordings by Mario Lanza. The story is generally quite light and witty in character. However, I'll Walk With God is sung by the Prince as he accompanies his father's coffin to its final resting place.This arrangement was commissioned by David Childs, and is included on his solo CD, Hear My Prayer. It is available on the Doyen label (DOYCD166).

    Smile - Charlie Chaplin

    Smile received its premiere at The Sage, Gateshead, on November 17th 2014 by trombone soloist Chris Gomersall and the Grimethorpe Colliery Band conducted by Robert Childs. The piece formed part of their winning Brass in Concert programme entitled ‘Lest We Forget'.A young Charlie Chaplin starred in his first movie in February 1914, six months after the outbreak of World War I, and by July 1915 Chaplin had become a cultural phenomenon as the great entertainer. He was the film industry's first international star and a particular favourite of the troops.Conceived as the instrumental theme for Chaplin's 1936 comedy Modern Times, the song known to us all as Smile was composed by Chaplin himself. This arrangement features the original version of the song, before breaking into an upbeat big band version of the song, as performed by Michael Buble, featuring an extended jazz break for either Flugel Horn or Cornet.Al Sharq has been recorded by Grimethorpe Colliery Band on their CD 'Grimethorpe Entertain' available to buy here.

    Cadillac of the Skies - John Williams

    Cadillac of the Skies is taken from the score to 1987 film Empire of the Sun, by John Williams. As Jim, played by a young Christian Bale, watches in amazement as the P-51 aircrafts attack the camp, he is overcome by the majestic spectacle of the aircraft and screams out joyously, "P-51, Cadillac of the Skies!" with the serene and beautiful music of the scene being wonderfully juxtaposed with the surroundings of war.
