Pavane for a Dead Princess - Ravel, M.

The first of Ravel's compositions to achieve success, the effect the composer intended is light and flowing, not, as Ravel once complained, "a dead pavane for a princess". For those interested in these things, the word "dead" of the title is a mistranslation. The French word here is "d?functe" which can, as in English mean "dead", but in this particlar context means "of a former time". "Pavane for a Princess of an Ancient Time" is much more accurate. No more corpses, please !

Robin Hood Prince of Thieves - Kaymen, M - Broadbent, D

A Robin Hood for todays audiences, light years removed from the romantic vision of Errol Flynn. This is a much darker Robin Hood (with Kevin Costner’s uncomfortable American accent), introducing characters (Morgan Freeman’s Azheem the Moor) that are not part of the original legend. Without doubt Alan Rickman’s campish Sheriff of Nottingham stole the film. Kamen’s main title theme whips the listener to another time and place – medieval magic!3rd section +

A Partridge In A Pear Tree - Gavin Somerset

The perfect Christmas concert finale!!! The Twelve Days of Christmas is known for being one of the most tedious pieces for any band to play - now the band get their own back! As the M.D starts to conduct the "Twelve Days Of Christmas", the band has other ideas. Throughout the piece, well-known carols are blasted out from all corners of the stage. This item is ideally suited for each band to add their own choreography. As the M.D fights to keep the front row playing all twelve days, the trombones stand to blast out Jingle Bells, the horns decide to join in and the back row then show their retaliation by giving a round of "Once In Royal David's City" - and the fun goes on. Eventually the M.D & front row finally loose their battle and give in at the end to a rousing line of "We Wish you a Merry Christmas". Fanfares, Jazz Waltz's and Christmas bedlam leave your audience in stitches and wanting more!! For Christmas 2020, we have made backing tracks of this title for you to download. These can be used either for personal playback use, or to create a virtual performance of the piece with your full band. To download the backing track, please RIGHT CLICK HERE & Save As .

    The Thunderer - Sousa

This march, one of Sousa's most popular compositions, was written in 1889 and was dedicated to the Knights Templar of Washington, D.C. Sousa had been knighted by that organization three years earlier. The origins of the name of the march are unclear and the march is noteworthy not only for Sousa's usual creative skills but also for the use, in two sections of the march, of military-style percussion and, in the last section, of featured fanfares. This arrangement was prepared for the 2009 Summer concerts of Brass Band of the Western Reserve, musical director Dr Keith M Wilkinson. The arrangement highlights the particular features mentioned above and performances will be enhanced by following the indicated staging directions.
