The Dirty Duck - Dan Price - -

The Dirty Duck is named after a public house opposite the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford and was commissioned by cornet superstar Tom Hutchinson.Composer Dan Price explains, "Tom was looking for a solo that was virtuosic in content with strong jazz influences and something of a crowd pleaser. The Dirty Duck was the end result. The piece sits firmly within the big band style, taking influence from the dance bands of the 1940s led by such greats as Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and Count Basie."The first performance of The Dirty Duck was given by Tom Hutchinson with the Cory Band conducted by David Childs on October 1st 2011 at Wiltshire Music Centre. The work's premiere recording features on the commercial disc, Cory In Concert Volume II, performed by Tom Hutchinson with the Cory Band conducted by Robert Childs.

DEEP RIVER (Brass Band Set) - William Broughton

An arrangement, in 'Count Basie' style, of the spiritual of the same name. The tempo indication on the original manuscript states "the slower the better" and therein lies probably the most difficult aspect of the piece.

    Arioso - Bach, J.S.

Never averse to using a good melody in several arrangements... after all he must count as the finest arranger in the history of music... Bach not only uses this Arioso in a Cantata but also a harpsichord concerto. His characteristic long melodic line never loses its hold over the listener's attention. In this arrangement the middle part of the band holds centre stage.

    Thyellene - Kevin Houben

Thyellene depicts of a battle that took place on the 'Tielenheide' - a stretch of moorland near the Belgian village of Tielen in 1597. In that memorable battle Prince Maurice of Nassau, commander of the Dutch army, defeated Count Varax, a general of the Spanish army - with a considerably smaller troop than the enemy. This great heroic subject has been transformed into this equally great work for brass band, which won the third prize at the 2009 European Composers Competition.

Voi Chi Sapete - Phillip Littlemore

Mozart's opera, The Marriage of Figaro , was based on what was a rather scandalous play by Pierre Beaumarchais, because the drama involves an incompetent nobleman being upstaged by a crafty, quick-witted servant named Figaro, in their quest for the same woman. The action takes place in just one day and offers a series of awkward and humorous situations, complete with a vibrant dialogue between the all the main characters. Voi Che Sapete is performed by Cherubino, who is about to be sent off to the army because the Count finds him a nuisance. When Cherubino appears before the Countess and Susanna to tell them of his fate, this aria is sung at the request of Susanna for a love song. Cherubino is characterized as a young adolescent who is in love with every woman he meets, and because his voice is yet unbroken, he is always played by a female singer.
