£33.08Libera Me from 'Requiem' (Brass Band) Faure arr. Rob Bushnell
Composed between 1887 and 1890, Gabriel Faure's Requiem is not only one of his best-known works but one of the most popular piece of choral music in the Classical repertoire, coming 23rd in the Classic FM's Hall of Fame 2024. Believed to be a tribute to his father (who died in 1885), Faure himself said "My Requiem wasn't written for anything - for pleasure, if I may call it that!" It started life as a five-movement work but was later expanded to be the final seven-movement work we know today. The first version (which Faure called "un petit Requiem") was first performed on 16 January 1888, with Faure conducting, a second version premiered on 21 January 1893 before the final version (reworked for full orchestra) was played on 12 July 1900; the Requiem was performed at the composer's own funeral in 1924.The Libera Me, or Deliver Me, was actually written in 1877 and is the sixth part of the Requiem.Faure once said of the work, "Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest." Upon interview, he also said, "It has been said that my Requiem does not express the fear of death and someone has called it a lullaby of death. But it is thus that I see death: as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience. The music of Gounod has been criticised for its inclination towards human tenderness. But his nature predisposed him to feel this way: religious emotion took this form inside him. Is it not necessary to accept the artist's nature? As to my Requiem, perhaps I have also instinctively sought to escape from what is thought right and proper, after all the years of accompanying burial services on the organ! I know it all by heart. I wanted to write something different."This arrangement is for the British-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. John Rutter's popular choral benediction is based on Numbers 6:24-26, and has here been arranged for brass band by Andrew Wainwright. It is a setting of a biblical benediction, followed by an extended 'Amen'. Rutter originally scored the piece for four vocal parts (SATB) and organ. He composed it in 1981 for the memorial service of Edward T. Chapman, the director of music at Highgate School, London, with whom he had studied when he attended the school. 'Quest' was originally written for the Territorial Youth Band (UK) in 2012. It is a major work in three movements, Movement 1: Making a difference, Movement 2: Making time and Movement 3: Making progress. The music essentially charts the journey of the Christians life. The music commences with Ray Steadman-Allen's choral work and testimony 'So this is it! My day for living!' and has references and then a presentation to the tune 'Southport' associated with the words 'To serve the present age my calling to fufil'. The music displays the struggle of the Christian in maintaining a witness within this world. The second movement is a reflective and prayerful setting of the song 'This day' found in the Sing to the Lord journal. The imposing third movement features the tune 'Trust in God' with the associated words 'As the weary way of life we journey'. The piece has been recorded by the International Staff Band under the same title (SPS330)

This composition in two parts is one of the first successful works Jacob de Haan published for brass band. Somewhat under the influence of Ted Huggen's Choral and Rock Out which was an overwhelming success at the time, the still very young Jacob de Haan wrote this composition. The first part (Air) exists of a choral melody with baroque grace notes, supported by a pop rhythm in the drums. The second part (Crazy Music) is a swinging bossa nova, in which various instrument groups present themselves in the continuously varying themes. The famous Black Dycke Mills Band contributed to the success of Crazy Music in the Air by regularly putting the piece on its tour programmes.Duration: 4:45

£35.00Carol of the Bells (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Littlemore, Phillip
This popular Christmas piece was composed by Mykola Leontovych around 1916. It is based on a Ukrainian folk chant known as 'Shchedryk', a New Year's carol. However, it was not until after the composer's death in 1921 that it was first introduced to Western audiences, when the Ukrainian National Choir included it on their tour of Europe and the Americas that same year. The film composer John Williams incorporated it into the score for the 1990 film Home Alone and he is credited for bringing it to a wider audience still, although it had been released on Christmas albums by a number of popular artists before that. This transcription for brass band has been adapted from the arrangement by Robert Prizeman, who created it for Libera, the world famous boys choir that he both founded and directs. Their unique, enchanting and, some say, heavenly sound delights audiences throughout the world through extensive concerts, recording and TV broadcasts. This brass band transcription introduces this skilled choral arrangement to a new genre and a whole new audience as well. Duration: 3.00
