Carol Of The Bells - Leontovich - Graham Boag

For bands looking to deliver an energetic performance over the festive season, look no further. Though previously well catalogued, the work became known more widely around the globe thanks to its use in John Williams' score to 'Home Alone'. This arrangement by Graham Boag allows all sections of your band to shine and enjoy the music that is marked 'Con Energico!'. At around two minutes in duration, this item works great as an attention grabbing piece, perfect as an opener to either half, or indeed an encore not to be missed!

Carol of the Bells - Mykola Dmytrovych Leontovych

Christmas time is my favourite time of year. I love the festive spirit and all the Christmas music both traditional and modern. This piece is based on the traditional Ukrainian Bell Carol that was composed by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Dmytrovych Leontovych. Throughout the piece you hear a four note ostinato that is the backbone to the music. I have taken those ideas and motifs and have mixed them with some of my own to create this piece of Christmas music. For something different I have given this piece two endings for the conductor to choose. The first ending is at bar 189 (page 18 in the score) where there is the repeated four bar ostinato section in the solo cornets and percussion that is marked "Keep repeating and fade to nothing". This is so the piece can either fade to nothing or for a bit of originality the piece can fade into the next piece during a concert programme. For ending number two you need to cut from bar 189 to 193 (bypassing ending one). And continue to the end. The choice of endings should bring some interesting performances of this wonderful traditional Christmas piece.Paul Lovatt-Cooper

CAROL OF THE BELLS (Brass Band) - Littlemore, Phillip

This popular Christmas piece was composed by Mykola Leontovych around 1916. It is based on a Ukrainian folk chant known as 'Shchedryk', a New Year's carol. However, it was not until after the composer's death in 1921 that it was first introduced to Western audiences, when the Ukrainian National Choir included it on their tour of Europe and the Americas that same year. The film composer John Williams incorporated it into the score for the 1990 film Home Alone and he is credited for bringing it to a wider audience still, although it had been released on Christmas albums by a number of popular artists before that. This transcription for brass band has been adapted from the arrangement by Robert Prizeman, who created it for Libera, the world famous boys choir that he both founded and directs. Their unique, enchanting and, some say, heavenly sound delights audiences throughout the world through extensive concerts, recording and TV broadcasts. This brass band transcription introduces this skilled choral arrangement to a new genre and a whole new audience as well.

Ukrainian Bell Carol - Mykola D. Leontovich - Philip Sparke

The Ukrainian Bell Carol is part of a large choral work entitled Shchedryk by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Dmytrovich Leontovych (1877-1921). The tune is an adaptation of an old 'shchedrivka', a song traditionally sung on Ukrainian New Year's Eve (January 13th) which hopes for good fortune in the year to come. The tune has since been the inspiration for at least four different Christmas carols, of which Carol of the Bells is the most famous. Philip Sparke has sourced the original Ukrainian melody to create this stirring arrangement.

Jingle Bells Fanfare - Bill Cumming - Jack Lythaby

What better way to open a Christmas concert than a fanfare piece based around arguably, the most famous Christmas carol ever written. In an arrangement for band based on an idea by Bill Cumming, there is plenty of majesty heard throughout this fanfare which refers to Jingle Bells throughout. Although the melody we all know is never fully allowed to be heard, the fanfare teases the listener, alluding to the things later to come throughout the rest of the concert.

A Carol Fantasy | Chris Ellis

An interesting and unusual take on a lesser known Christmas piece.'I have played many music selections in my time featuring Christmas music, but the funny thing is they all seem to use the same tunes! Jingle Bells, Rudolph.... but I didn't want to produce another of those! An interesting thought ??" all Christmas selections seem to be in 4 beats in a bar and Major keys, all bright and festive. Why not try something different?Carol Fantasy uses 3 beats in a bar, and is written in a Minor key! Some of the classics are there, We Three Kings, Coventry Carol, and We Wish you a Merry Christmas, but they are all stitched together using the lesser known Bell Carol. This could well be the only Christmas selection with a Jazz waltz feel!ChrisEnjoy a different, refreshing and enjoyable slant on Christmas music!InstrumentationSoprano CornetSolo, Repiano, 2nd and 3rd CornetsFlugelhornSolo, 1st and 2nd Tenor Horns1st and 2nd BaritonesEuphonium1st, 2nd and Bass TromboneEb and Bb BassTimpaniDrum KitXylophoneISMN: 979-0-708127-40-6
